Abstract We review a recipe to produce a lattice construction of fermionic phases of matter in the presence of time reversal symmetry by extending the fermionization and bosonization known in (1+1) dimensions to various setups including higher spacetime dimensions in the presence of global symmetries. As an application, we provide a state sum lattice path integral for a (1+1)-dimensional topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry generating the $\mathbb{Z}_8$ classification of the symmetry-protected topological phase. We also illustrate a state sum path integral for a (3+1)-dimensional topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry that generates the $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ classification.
Abstract We review a recipe to produce a lattice construction of fermionic phases of matter in the presence of time reversal symmetry by extending the fermionization and bosonization known in (1+1) dimensions to various setups including higher spacetime dimensions in the presence of global symmetries. As an application, we provide a state sum lattice path integral for a (1+1)-dimensional topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry generating the Z8 classification of the symmetry-protected topological phase. We also illustrate a state sum path integral for a (3+1)-dimensional topological superconductor with time reversal symmetry that generates the Z16 classification.
In this paper, we provide state sum path integral definitions of exotic invertible topological phases proposed in the recent paper by Hsin, Ji, and Jian [arXiv:2105.09454 [cond-mat.str-el]. The exotic phase has time-reversal (T) symmetry, and depends on a choice of the space-time structure called the Wu structure. The exotic phase cannot be captured by the classification of any bosonic or fermionic topological phases and thus gives a novel class of invertible topological phases. When the T symmetry defect admits a spin structure, our construction reduces to a sort of the decorated domain wall construction, in terms of a bosonic theory with T symmetry defects decorated with a fermionic phase that depends on a spin structure of the T symmetry defect. By utilizing our path integral, we propose a lattice construction for the exotic phase that generates the Z8 classification of the (3+1)d invertible phase based on the Wu structure. This generalizes the Z8 classification of the T-symmetric (1+1)d topological superconductor proposed by Fidkowski and Kitaev. On oriented space-time, this (3+1)d invertible phase with a specific choice of Wu structure reduces to a bosonic Crane-Yetter TQFT which has a topological ordered state with a semion on its boundary. Moreover, we propose a subclass of G-SPT phases based on the Wu structure labeled by a pair of cohomological data in generic space-time dimensions. This generalizes the Gu-Wen subclass of fermionic SPT phases.
We define and compute many-body topological invariants of interacting fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases, protected by an orientation-reversing symmetry, such as time-reversal or reflection symmetry. The topological invariants are given by partition functions obtained by a path integral on unoriented spacetime which, as we show, can be computed for a given ground state wave function by considering a nonlocal operation, "partial" reflection or transpose. As an application of our scheme, we study the Z_{8} and Z_{16} classification of topological superconductors in one and three dimensions.
Abstract We discuss a recipe to produce a lattice construction of fermionic phases of matter on unoriented manifolds. This is performed by extending the construction of spin TQFT via the Grassmann integral proposed by Gaiotto and Kapustin, to the unoriented pin ± case. As an application, we construct gapped boundaries for time-reversal-invariant Gu-Wen fermionic SPT phases. In addition, we provide a lattice definition of (1+1)d pin_ invertible theory whose partition function is the Arf-Brown-Kervaire invariant, which generates the ℤ8 classification of (1+1)d topological superconductors. We also compute the indicator formula of ℤ16 valued time-reversal anomaly for (2+1)d pin+ TQFT based on our construction.
Quantum anomalies, breakdown of classical symmetries by quantum effects, provide a sharp definition of symmetry protected topological phases. In particular, they can diagnose interaction effects on the noninteracting classification of fermionic symmetry protected topological phases. In this paper, we identify quantum anomalies in two kinds of (3+1)d fermionic symmetry protected topological phases: (i) topological insulators protected by CP (charge conjugation $\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}$ reflection) and electromagnetic U(1) symmetries, and (ii) topological superconductors protected by reflection symmetry. For the first example, which is related to, by CPT-theorem, time-reversal symmetric topological insulators, we show that the CP-projected partition function of the surface theory is not invariant under large U(1) gauge transformations, but picks up an anomalous sign, signaling a Z2 topological classification. Similarly, for the second example, which is related to, by CPT-theorem, class DIII topological superconductors, we discuss the invariance/noninvariance of the partition function of the surface theory, defined on the three-torus and its descendants generated by the orientifold projection, under large diffeomorphisms (coordinate transformations). The connection to the collapse of the noninteracting classification by an integer (Z) to Z16, in the presence of interactions, is discussed.
Crystalline symmetry and time-reversal symmetry are commonly present in real superconducting materials. However, the topological classification of systems respecting these symmetries, particularly for interacting fermions, remains incomplete. In this work, we systematically classify time-reversal symmetry-protected crystalline topological superconductors in two-dimensional interacting fermionic systems using an explicit real-space construction. Among the resulting phases, we identify intrinsically interacting fermionic topological superconductors, i.e., phases that cannot be realized in either free-fermion or interacting bosonic systems. For spinless fermions with protecting symmetry group C4×Z2T or D4×Z2T (plus fermion parity), the intrinsic sector has a Z4 classification. The corresponding root phases generating this Z4 classification admit a transparent real-space construction in terms of decorated 1D blocks. These blocks are 1D fermionic symmetry-protected topological (FSPT) phases, realizable as double Majorana chains. We further find the corresponding Z4 spinless intrinsic phases for wallpaper groups p4, p4m, and p4g. We also find an additional Z2 intrinsically interacting phase for spinless fermions with wallpaper group pm, which is absent with the corresponding point-group symmetry alone. Moreover, these intrinsic phases naturally give rise to higher-order FSPT phases that support corner zero modes. Finally, we verify the crystalline equivalence principle for generic 2D interacting FSPT systems with both crystalline and internal symmetries.
We present the correspondence between symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases and their anomalous boundary states, based on examples in various spacetime dimensions. Through the study of the effect of interactions on these SPT phases, we discovered a new formalism of quantum anomalies, associated with discrete spacetime (such as time-reversal and spatial reflection) symmetries in particular, to classify distinct interacting topological phases. An example is the Z2 classification of the (2+1)d topological insulator protected by charge U(1) and time-reversal (or CP) symmetries, which can be deduced by the form of the global U(1) gauge anomalies on its edge theories defined on closed unorientable manifolds. In this case, the nontrivial phase (in free systems) is robust against electron interactions. Another example is the (3+1)d topological superconductor protected by only time-reversal or reflection symmetry. For this system, we identified the bulk phase by studying the global gravitational anomalies of the surface theories formulated on unorientable spacetime manifolds, and also discussed its connection to the collapse of the non-interacting classification by an integer Z to Z16, in the presence of interactions. We also revisit the problem of gauging a discrete internal symmetry in theories of chiral (Weyl) fermions in 3+1 dimensions – which have not been fully understood so far – from the perspective of fermionic SPT phases in 4+1 dimensions. Comparing with the previous results, we give a complete answer for the anomalies constraints on the discrete symmetry, as our approach is based on purely geometrical considerations, namely, our assumption is more fundamental and general. Furthermore, our result also provides an understanding of gapped states of fermions with anomalous discrete symmetries, and we present a model, based on weak coupling, for constructing these anomalous gapped states.
