Spin mixing in spinor Fermi gases

Abstract

We study a spinor fermionic system under the effect of a spin-exchange interaction. We focus on the interplay between the spin-exchange interaction and the effective quadratic Zeeman shift. We examine the static and the dynamic properties of both a two- and many-body system. We find that the spin-exchange interaction induces coherent Rabi oscillation in the two-body system, but the oscillation is quickly damped when the system is extended to the many-body case.

Evolution of a spinor condensate: Coherent dynamics, dephasing, and revivals

Jochen Kronjäger, C. Becker, M. Brinkmann +4 more

We present measurements and a theoretical model for the interplay of spin-dependent interactions and external magnetic fields in atomic spinor condensates. We highlight general features such as quadratic Zeeman dephasing and its influence on coherent spin mixing processes by focusing on a specific coherent superposition state in a $F=1$ $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ Bose-Einstein condensate. In particular, we observe the transition from coherent spinor oscillations to the thermal equilibration.

Coherent Heteronuclear Spin Dynamics in an Ultracold Spinor Mixture

Xiaoke Li, Bing Zhu, Xiaodong He +5 more

We report the observation of coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics driven by interspecies spin-spin interaction in an ultracold spinor mixture, which manifests as periodical and well-correlated spin oscillations between two atomic species. In particular, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the oscillations and find a resonance behavior which depends on both the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects and the spin-dependent interaction. We also demonstrate a unique knob for controlling the spin dynamics in the spinor mixture with species-dependent vector light shifts.

Floquet spinor Bose gases

Kazuya Fujimoto, Shun Uchino

The authors investigate the spin-1 Bose gases under a periodically oscillating quadratic Zeeman energy shift. Employing the high-frequency expansion, they derive the effective static Hamiltonian, which has a new spin interaction, and find that unconventional stationary states and excitation spectra emerge.

Resonant Spin-Changing Collisions in Spinor Fermi Gases

N. Bornemann, P. Hyllus, Luis Santos

The compensation of quadratic Zeeman effect and trap energy in high-spin fermions is shown to lead to resonances in the spin-changing collisions that are typically absent in spinor condensates and spin-1/2 fermions. We study these resonances in lattice fermions, showing that they permit the targeting of a particular spin-changing channel while suppressing the rest and the creation of magnetically insensitive superpositions of many-body states with entangled spin and trap degrees of freedom. Finally, the intersite tunneling may lead to a quantum phase transition described by a quantum Ising model.

Giant Spin Oscillations in an Ultracold Fermi Sea

J. S. Krauser, Ulrich Ebling, Nick Fläschner +5 more

Collective behavior in many-body systems is the origin of many fascinating phenomena in nature, ranging from the formation of clouds to magnetic properties of solids. We report on the observation of collective spin dynamics in an ultracold Fermi sea with large spin. As a key result, we observed long-lived and large-amplitude coherent spin oscillations driven by local spin interactions. At ultralow temperatures, Pauli blocking stabilizes the collective behavior, and the Fermi sea behaves as a single entity in spin space. With increasing temperature, we observed a stronger damping associated with particle-hole excitations. Unexpectedly, we found a high-density regime where excited spin configurations are collisionally stabilized. Our results reveal the intriguing interplay between microscopic processes either stimulating or suppressing collective effects in a fermionic many-body system.

Spinor Bose gases: Symmetries, magnetism, and quantum dynamics

Dan Stamper-Kurn, Masahito Ueda

Spinor Bose gases form a family of quantum fluids manifesting both magnetic order and superfluidity. This article reviews experimental and theoretical progress in understanding the static and dynamic properties of these fluids. The connection between system properties and the rotational symmetry properties of the atomic states and their interactions are investigated. Following a review of the experimental techniques used for characterizing spinor gases, their mean-field and many-body ground states, both in isolation and under the application of symmetry-breaking external fields, are discussed. These states serve as the starting point for understanding low-energy dynamics, spin textures, and topological defects, effects of magnetic-dipole interactions, and various nonequilibrium collective spin-mixing phenomena. The paper aims to form connections and establish coherence among the vast range of works on spinor Bose gases, so as to point to open questions and future research opportunities.
