Role of different types of subsystems in a doubly driven Λ system in 87 Rb

Abstract

The well-known $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system using two ground-state hyperfine levels, ${F}_{g}=1$ and ${F}_{g}=2$ of $5{S}_{1/2}$, and one hyperfine level, ${F}_{e}=2$ of excited state of $5{P}_{3/2}$ of ${}^{87}$Rb, has been recently studied using two counterpropagating control lasers [Sapam Ranjita Chanu, Kanhaiya Pandey, and Vasant Natarajan, Europhys. Lett. 98, 44009 (2012)]. The experiment shows conversion of electromagnetically induced transparency into electromagnetically induced absorption because the doubly driven $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system forms various subsystems. We here present a detailed theoretical study of the different possible subsystems created by this configuration. We also explore the possibility of tuning the strength of individual subsystems by changing the polarization of the control lasers.

The well known Lambda-system using two ground state hyperfine levels, F=1 and F=2 of 5S1/2 and one hyperfine level, F=2 of excited state of 5P3/2 of 87Rb has been recently studied using two counter- propagating control lasers [1]. The experiment shows conversion of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) into electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) because the doubly driven Lambda-system forms various sub-systems. We here present detailed theoretical study of the different possible sub-systems created by this configuration. We also explore the possibility of tuning the strength of individual sub-systems by changing the polarization of the control lasers.

Effects of neighboring transitions on electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in 87 Rb atoms with respect to varying hyperfine spacings

Zeeshan Ali Safdar Jadoon, Aisar-ul Hassan, Heung‐Ryoul Noh +1 more

Effects of neighboring transitions through Doppler broadening on electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of the degenerate two-level system at the F g =2→ F e =1,2, and 3 transitions of the 87 Rb D2 line have been investigated. Two different polarization configurations, such as linear parallel and linear perpendicular polarizations of coupling and probe lasers, have been studied. We study the significant variation of EIT and EIA due to the effect of the neighboring transitions via artificial variation of the hyperfine spacings of the 5 P 3/2 state. We have a new observation such as EIT instead of EIA due to the neighboring effect, even in the case of closed systems such as F g =2→ F e =3 of 87 Rb for the linear parallel configuration, for the first time to our best knowledge. The observed spectra match well with theoretically calculated spectra. EIAs for the open F g =2→ F e =1 and 2 transitions at the linear perpendicular polarization are observed due to neighboring effects. This system may be applied to optical switching systems for future quantum processing application.

High-resolution hyperfine spectroscopy of excited states using electromagnetically induced transparency

A Krishna, K Pandey, Ajay Wasan +1 more

We use the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency in a three-level atomic system for hyperfine spectroscopy of upper states that are not directly coupled to the ground state. The three levels form a ladder system: the probe laser couples the ground state to the lower excited state, while the control laser couples the two upper states. As the frequency of the control laser is scanned, the probe absorption shows transparency peaks whenever the control laser is resonant with a hyperfine level of the upper state. As an illustration of the technique, we measure hyperfine structure in the 7 S 1/2 states of 85 Rb and 87 Rb, and obtain an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over previous values.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold85Rb atoms trapped in the ground hyperfineF= 2 state

V B Tiwari, S Singh, H S Rawat +2 more

We report electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cold 85 Rb atoms, trapped in the lower hyperfine level F = 2, of the ground state 5 2 S 1/2 (Tiwari V B et al 2008 Phys. Rev. A 78 063421). Two steady-state Λ-type systems of hyperfine energy levels are investigated using probe transitions into the levels F ′ = 2 and F ′ = 3 of the excited state 5 2 P 3/2 in the presence of coupling transitions F = 3 → F ′ = 2 and F = 3 → F ′ = 3, respectively. The effects of uncoupled magnetic sublevel transitions and coupling field's Rabi frequency on the EIT signal from these systems are studied using a simple theoretical model.

Decoherence of electromagnetically induced transparency in atomic vapor

Eden V. Figueroa, Frank Vewinger, J. Appel +1 more

We report characterization of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonances in the D1 line of (87)Rb under various experimental conditions. The dependence of the EIT linewidth on the power of the pump field was investigated at various temperatures for the ground states of the lambda system associated with different hyperfine levels of the atomic 5S(1/2) state as well as magnetic sublevels of the same hyperfine level. Strictly linear behavior was observed in all cases. A theoretical analysis of our results shows that dephasing in the ground state is the main source of decoherence, with population exchange playing a minor role.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in a closed lambda-shaped four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Baozhu Yang +1 more

A quasi-lambda four-level system shows both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In addition to an optical coupling field and a probing field, there is a radio field which interacts with two excited state hyperfine levels of the quasi-lambda four-level system consisting of two excited state hyperfine levels and two ground state hyperfine levels. If a driving field which interacts with two ground state hyperfine levels is introduced, the quasi-lambda four-level system is modified to a closed-lambda four-level system. The behaviors of the driving field and radio field are studied in this paper and it is seen that the occurence of EIA or EIT and the whole probing properties are controlled by the Rabi frequencies of both driving field and radio field.
