Abstract

The measurement of the two-mode squeezed vacuum generated in an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) was performed with photon number resolving multipixel photon counters (MPPCs). Implementation of the MPPCs allows for the observation of noise reduction in a broad dynamic range of the OPA gain, which is inaccessible with standard single photon avalanche photodetectors.

Measurement of photon correlations with multipixel photon counters

Dmitry A. Kalashnikov, Leonid A. Krivitsky

Development of reliable photon-number-resolving detectors (PNRDs), devices that are capable of distinguishing 1,2,3… photons, is of a great importance for quantum optics and its applications. A new class of affordable PNRD is based on multipixel photon counters (MPPCs). Here we review results of experiments on using MPPCs for direct characterization of squeezed vacuum (SV) states, generated via parametric downconversion. We use MPPCs to measure the second-order normalized intensity correlation function (g(2)) and directly detect the two-mode squeezing of SV states. We also present a method of calibration of crosstalk probability in MPPCs based on g(2) measurements of coherent states.

Accessing Photon Bunching with Photon Number Resolving Multi-Pixel Detector

Leonid A. Krivitsky, Dmitry A. Kalashnikov, Maria V. Chekhova

The intensity correlation function of squeezed vacuum, produced in an OPA, was measured with a photon-number resolving multi-pixel detector (MPPC). Based on realistic MPPC model, strong photon bunching was revealed for low-gain OPA radiation.

Accessing photon bunching with a photon number resolving multi-pixel detector

Dmitry A. Kalashnikov, Si-Hui Tan, Maria V. Chekhova +1 more

In quantum optics and its applications, there is an urgent demand for photon-number resolving detectors. Recently, there appeared multi-pixel counters (MPPC) that are able to distinguish between 1,2,..10 photons. At the same time, strong coupling between different pixels (crosstalk) hinders their photon-number resolution. In this work, we suggest a method for `filtering out' the crosstalk effect in the measurement of intensity correlation functions. The developed approach can be expanded to the analysis of higher-order intensity correlations by using just a single MPPC.

Gain of squeezing via photon subtractions

Mikhail S. Podoshvedov, Sergey A. Podoshvedov, S. P. Kulik

We develop a method for generating a more squeezed than single-mode squeezed vacuum (SMSV) state by subtracting 2,4,6 photons from it. In general, the more photons are subtracted, the more gain of the squeezing (more of 3 dB) is observed in the measurement-induced continuous variable (CV) states of definite parity. However, the two-photon subtraction strategy is practically preferred. It can be implemented with higher success probability, wider squeezing gain width ~ 5 dB and least quadrature variance in the corresponding range of initial squeezing. We demonstrate the mitigating effect of a photon-number resolving (PNR) detector with non-unit quantum efficiency on the output characteristics of the measurement-induced CV states, resulting in their slight decrease compared to ideal photon subtraction. Use of a single photon in addition to the SMSV state at beam splitter (BS) input with subsequent registration of odd number of photons (say, 3 photons) allows the implementation of the measurement-induced even CV state which is several times brighter than the initial state and has lower quadrature noise.

COMPARATIVE TEST OF TWO METHODS OF QUANTUM EFFICIENCY ABSOLUTE MEASUREMENT BASED ON SQUEEZED VACUUM DIRECT DETECTION

I. N. Agafonov, Maria V. Chekhova, Alexander N. Penin +3 more

We realize and test in experiment a method recently proposed for measuring absolute quantum efficiency of analog photodetectors. Similar to the traditional (Klyshko) method of absolute calibration, the new one is based on the direct detection of two-mode squeezed vacuum at the output of a traveling wave OPA. However, in the new method, one measures the difference-photocurrent variance rather than the correlation function of photocurrents (number of coincidences), which makes the technique applicable for high-gain OPA. In this work we test the new method versus the traditional one for the case of photon-counting detectors where both techniques are valid.

Squeezing and QND measurement with an OPA

Ping Koy Lam, Timothy C. Ralph, B. C. Buchler +2 more

Optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) are capable of generating strongly squeezed states. The output is referred to as a 'vacuum squeezed state'. These squeezed states can be used to improve the performance of optical measurements limited by quantum noise t facilitate QND measurements.
