Measurement of photon correlations with multipixel photon counters

Abstract

Development of reliable photon-number-resolving detectors (PNRDs), devices that are capable of distinguishing 1,2,3… photons, is of a great importance for quantum optics and its applications. A new class of affordable PNRD is based on multipixel photon counters (MPPCs). Here we review results of experiments on using MPPCs for direct characterization of squeezed vacuum (SV) states, generated via parametric downconversion. We use MPPCs to measure the second-order normalized intensity correlation function (g(2)) and directly detect the two-mode squeezing of SV states. We also present a method of calibration of crosstalk probability in MPPCs based on g(2) measurements of coherent states.

Measurement of two-mode squeezing with photon number resolving multipixel detectors

The measurement of the two-mode squeezed vacuum generated in an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) was performed with photon number resolving multipixel photon counters (MPPCs). Implementation of the MPPCs allows for the observation of noise reduction in a broad dynamic range of the OPA gain, which is inaccessible with standard single photon avalanche photodetectors.

Accessing photon bunching with a photon number resolving multi-pixel detector

Dmitry A. Kalashnikov, Si-Hui Tan, Maria V. Chekhova +1 more

In quantum optics and its applications, there is an urgent demand for photon-number resolving detectors. Recently, there appeared multi-pixel counters (MPPC) that are able to distinguish between 1,2,..10 photons. At the same time, strong coupling between different pixels (crosstalk) hinders their photon-number resolution. In this work, we suggest a method for `filtering out' the crosstalk effect in the measurement of intensity correlation functions. The developed approach can be expanded to the analysis of higher-order intensity correlations by using just a single MPPC.

Leonid A. Krivitsky, Dmitry A. Kalashnikov, Maria V. Chekhova

The intensity correlation function of squeezed vacuum, produced in an OPA, was measured with a photon-number resolving multi-pixel detector (MPPC). Based on realistic MPPC model, strong photon bunching was revealed for low-gain OPA radiation.

Quantum Calibration of Photon-Number-Resolving Detectors Based on Multi-Pixel Photon Counters

Yujie Cai, Yu Chen, Xiuliang Chen +5 more

In this paper, we reconstructed the positive operator-valued measure (POVM) of a photon-number-resolving detector (PNRD) based on a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) by means of quantum detector tomography (QDT) at 791 nm and 523 nm, respectively. MPPC is a kind of spatial-multiplexing PNRD with a silicon avalanche photodiode (Si-APD) array as the photon receiver. Experimentally, the quantum characteristics of MPPC were calibrated at 2 MHz at two different wavelengths. The POVM elements were given by QDT. The fidelity of the reconstructed POVM elements is higher than 99.96%, which testifies that the QDT is reliable to calibrate MPPC at different wavelengths. With QDT and associated Wigner functions, the quantum properties of MPPC can be calibrated more directly and accurately in contrast with those conventional methods of modeling detectors.

Reduction of g2(0) value in heralded spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources using photon number resolving detectors

Ciro Bruscino, Mikkel Ejrnaes, Pasquale Ercolano +6 more

Single Photon Sources (SPSs) play a pivotal role in fields such as quantum communication and quantum cryptography by generating information in a secure manner. However, realizing the ideal emission of single photons with high efficiency is still a theoretical model. This leads to the presence of multiphoton components in SPSs, which could potentially compromise security. This study focuses on enhancing the purity of a class of sources by characterizing their photon number distribution and mitigating the impact of the multiphoton components. We propose the use of Photon Number Resolving Detectors (PNRD) as a technique to exclude multiphoton contributions, particularly in sources like Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion sources, where emitted photons can be represented as Two-Mode Squeezed Vacuum states. By analyzing the second-order cross-correlation function, g2(0), using either PNRD or Single Photon Detectors, we can quantify the reduction in multiphoton contributions.

Photon-number-resolving detectors and their role in quantifying quantum correlations

Si-Hui Tan, Leonid A. Krivitsky, Berthold‐Georg Englert

Harnessing entanglement as a resource is the main workhorse of many quantum protocols, and establishing the degree of quantum correlations of quantum states is an important certification process that has to take place prior to any implementations of these quantum protocols. The emergence of photodetectors known as photon-number-resolving detectors (PNRDs) that allow for accounting of photon numbers simultaneously arriving at the detectors has led to the need for modeling accurately and applying them for use in the certification process. Here we study the variance of difference of photocounts (VDP) of two PNRDs, which is one measure of quantum correlations, under the effects of loss and saturation. We found that it would be possible to distinguish between the classical correlation of a two-mode coherent state and the quantum correlation of a twin-beam state within some photo count regime of the detector. We compare the behavior of two such PNRDs. The first for which the photocount statistics follow a binomial distribution accounting for losses, and the second is that of Agarwal, Vogel, and Sperling for which the incident beam is first split and then separately measured by ON/OFF detectors. In our calculations, analytical expressions are derived for the variance of difference where possible. In these cases, Gauss' hypergeometric function appears regularly, giving an insight to the type of quantum statistics the photon counting gives in these PNRDs. The different mechanisms of the two types of PNRDs leads to quantitative differences in their VDP.
