Abstract

Optical parametric amplifiers (OPA) are capable of generating strongly squeezed states. The output is referred to as a 'vacuum squeezed state'. These squeezed states can be used to improve the performance of optical measurements limited by quantum noise t facilitate QND measurements.

Squeezed amplification in a gain-saturated parametric amplifier

N. C. Wong, Ke-Xun Sun, Jeffrey H. Shapiro

Recently optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) with vacuum inputs have been extensively studied and shown to generate a significant amount of squeezing, but little is known about the quantum noise behavior of an OPA with an injected signal field. We have performed a linearized quantum analysis of a nondegenerate OPA operated in the saturated gain regime showing that the amplified output intensity of a coherent-state input signal becomes squeezed when the classical small-signal gain falls below unity. In uses such as master-oscillator power amplifiers, for which the signal of interest is the mean output intensity, the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be higher than the input SNR over a broad operating range. For an OPA pumped at 90% of threshold, the SNR improvement is about a factor of 3, and with a 10-Db amplitude squeezed pump, the improvement increases to about a factor of 7. Such a tunable gain-saturated OPA with large-signal gain and improved SNR can be potentially useful in digital communication.

Quantum Nondemolition Measurements Improved by a Squeezed Meter Input

Robert Bruckmeier, Klaus Schneider, Stephan Schiller +1 more

Continuous quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements of the amplitude quadrature of a 1064 nm wave are performed with a monolithic dual-port degenerate optical parametric amplifier (OPA). The quality of the measurement is limited in part by the quantum fluctuations carried by the vacuum meter input wave. Improved QND measurements are realized by injecting 3.4 dB amplitude-squeezed light into the meter input port of the OPA. This achieves increased squeezing and correlation of the output signal and meter waves, and both improved operation as a quantum optical tap and as a quantum state preparator. The all-solid-state system was operated for 5 h with high stability.

An entangled squeezed state generated by an optical parametric amplifier and a beam splitter

Gang Ren, Chunzao Zhang

Abstract We propose a method to generate an entangled squeezed state using an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) and a beam splitter (BS). This device can manipulate the output quantum light field by modulating two parameters: the intensity of the OPA and the transmittance of the optical BS. For the output quantum state associated with a symmetric BS, there is no quadrature squeezing. Moreover, neither photon correlation nor entanglement are observed. However, in terms of sum squeezing, the quantum state corresponding to the symmetric BS is the strongest. Therefore, an asymmetric BS and a highly squeezing OPA are the best choices for generating the quantum entangled squeezed states.

Bright squeezed-vacuum source with 11 spatial mode

Angela M. Pérez, T. Sh. Iskhakov, Polina R. Sharapova +4 more

Bright squeezed vacuum, a macroscopic nonclassical state of light, can be obtained at the output of a strongly pumped nonseeded traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier (OPA). By constructing the OPA of two consecutive crystals separated by a large distance, we make the squeezed vacuum spatially single-mode without a significant decrease in the brightness or squeezing.

Quantum limits for cascaded optical parametric amplifiers

Dong Wang, Yong Zhang, Min Xiao

We demonstrate the enhanced quantum noise reduction of the output field from an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) by employing the cascaded optical parametric amplifiers (COPA), in which the output field of one OPA is the input field of the subsequent one. The output field noise formulas of the cascaded degenerate and nondegenerate OPAs (CDOPA and CNOPA) are obtained. The analytical results show that a CDOPA and a CNOPA can generate squeezing beams and entangled beams with a wider bandwidth under a low pump parameter, respectively. The cavity output efficiency and the intracavity loss are the main factors for improving the degrees of squeezing and entanglement. Our work will provide improved schemes for designing COPAs to efficiently produce high-quality squeezed and entangled states, which have potential applications in quantum-information processing.

Recovery of continuous wave squeezing at low frequencies

Warwick P. Bowen, Roman Schnabel, Nicolas Treps +2 more

We propose and demonstrate a system that produces squeezed vacuum using a pair of optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs). This scheme allows the production of phase sidebands on the squeezed vacuum which facilitate phase locking in downstream applications. We observe strong, stably locked, continuous wave vacuum squeezing at frequencies as low as 220 kHz. We propose an alternative resonator configuration to overcome low frequency squeezing degradation caused by the OPAs.
