Abstract

The k = 3 Read–Rezayi (RR) parafermion quantum Hall state hosts non-Abelian excitations which provide a platform for universal topological quantum computation. Although the RR state may be realized at the filling factor ν = 12/5 in GaAs-based two-dimensional electron systems, the corresponding quantum Hall state is weak and at present nearly impossible to study experimentally. Here we argue that the RR state can alternatively be realized in a class of chiral materials with massless and massive Dirac-like band structure. This family of materials encompasses monolayer and bilayer graphene, as well as topological insulators. We show that, compared to GaAs, these systems provide several important advantages in realizing and studying the RR state. Most importantly, the effective interactions can be tuned in situ by varying the external magnetic field, and by designing the dielectric environment of the sample. This tunability enables the realization of RR state with controllable energy gaps in different Landau levels. It also allows one to probe the quantum phase transitions to other compressible and incompressible phases.

Read-Rezayi fractional Chern insulators in modulated Bernal graphene

Ruth Mora-Soto, André Grossi Fonseca, Raül Perea‐Causín +3 more

Fibonacci anyons provide a universal platform for topological quantum computation, and emerge as low-energy excitations in the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Read-Rezayi phase in the fractional quantum Hall effect. However, realistic microscopic realizations of this phase in the absence of a magnetic field have remained elusive. We study a model of periodically modulated Bernal bilayer graphene with gate-screened Coulomb interactions. Using the recently developed target-phase optimization method in conjunction with band-projected exact diagonalization, we identify at filling $ν=3/5$ a region of parameter space whose ground state is consistent with a Read-Rezayi fractional Chern insulator. The partially filled band from which it arises is a part of a two-band complex which mimics geometric aspects of the lowest and first Landau levels, with the ground state at $ν=1/2$ consistent with the Moore-Read state. Our results suggest that modulated Bernal graphene can realize delicate non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states at zero magnetic field, while demonstrating target-phase optimization as a practical route to discovering such phases in realistic, high-dimensional microscopic models.

Parafermions in moiré minibands

Hui Liu, Raül Perea‐Causín, Emil J. Bergholtz

Abstract Moiré materials provide a remarkably tunable platform for topological and strongly correlated quantum phases of matter. Very recently, the first Abelian fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) at zero magnetic field have been experimentally demonstrated, and it has been theoretically predicted that non-Abelian states with Majorana fermion excitations may be realized in the nearly dispersionless minibands of these systems. Here, we provide telltale evidence based on many-body exact diagonalization for the even more exotic possibility of moiré-based non-Abelian FCIs exhibiting Fibonacci parafermion excitations. In particular, we obtain low-energy quantum numbers, spectral flow, many-body Chern numbers, and entanglement spectra consistent with the $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{3}$$ Z 3 Read–Rezayi parafermion phase in an exemplary moiré system with tunable quantum geometry. Our results hint towards the robustness of moiré-based parafermions and encourage the pursuit in moiré systems of these non-Abelian quasiparticles that are superior candidates for topological quantum computing.

Non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states at filling factor 3/4

Kai-Wen 楷文 Huang 黄, Ying-Hai Wu

Abstract Fractional quantum Hall states have been observed at filling factor ν = 3/4 in GaAs hole system and bilayer graphene. In theoretical bootstrap analysis, it was revealed that non-Abelian topological orders with Ising anyons can be realized at ν = 3/4, which exhibit 12 fold ground state degeneracy on the torus. The properties of ν = 3/4 states can be analyzed using two complementary approaches. In the first one, they are treated as particle–hole conjugate of ν = 1/4 Moore–Read types states. In the second one, they are mapped to composite fermions with reverse flux attachment at effective filling factor 3/2, whose integral part realizes an integer quantum Hall state and the fractional part realizes ν = 1/2 Moore–Read type states. For bilayer graphene with appropriate Landau level mixing, numerical calculations have found 12 quasi-degenerate ground states on the torus at ν = 3/4. Chiral graviton spectral functions of these states have one low energy peak with negative chirality and one high energy peak with positive chirality. This points to a specific member of the Moore–Read type states and agrees with the deduction based on daughter states.

Stability of topological insulators with non-Abelian edge excitations

Andrea Cappelli A, Enrico Randellini

Chiral–antichiral pairs of non-Abelian Hall states, like the Pfaffian, Read–Rezayi and NASS states, can be used to model two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulators. Their stability was shown to be associated to the presence of a anomaly and characterized by the same index introduced for free fermion and Abelian systems. In this work, we continue the stability analysis by providing the form of time-reversal invariant interactions that gap the non-Abelian edge excitations. Our approach is based on the description of non-Abelian states as projections of corresponding 'parent' Abelian states.

Engineering quantum Hall phases in a synthetic bilayer graphene system

Ze-Pei Cian, Tobias Graß, Abolhassan Vaezi +2 more

Synthetic quantum Hall bilayer (SQHB), realized by optically driven monolayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime, provides a flexible platform for engineering quantum Hall phases as discussed in Ghazaryan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 247403 (2017)]. The coherent driving which couples two Landau levels mimics an effective tunneling between synthetic layers. The tunneling strength, the effective Zeeman coupling, and two-body interaction matrix elements are tunable by varying the driving frequency and the driving strength. Using infinite density matrix renormalization group techniques combined with exact diagonalization, we show that the system exhibits a non-Abelian bilayer Fibonacci phase at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{2}{3}$. Moreover, at integer filling $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$, the SQHB exhibits quantum Hall ferromagnetism. Using Hartree-Fock theory and exact diagonalization, we show that excitations of the quantum Hall ferromagnet are topological textures known as skyrmions.

Tunable Multiband Geometry and Fractional Phases in Higher Vortexable Systems

Xiaohan Wan, Siddhartha Sarkar, Ting Cao +3 more

Higher vortexability is often viewed as a route to topological flat bands with higher-Landau-level-like quantum geometry. Here we emphasize a complementary perspective: it provides a tunable multiband structure in which wave function geometry can be varied continuously while the band dispersion, degeneracy, and topology remain fixed. We perform systematic exact-diagonalization studies of many-body phases in fractionally filled higher vortexable moiré systems, retaining the full flat-band Hilbert space rather than projecting onto a single band. The multiband treatment reveals a cascade of Abelian and non-Abelian phases at zero magnetic field, including integer and fractional exciton insulators, Abelian fractional Chern insulators, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states. At fixed filling, different phases are connected through transitions or crossovers driven solely by changes in wave function geometry, highlighting quantum geometry itself as a direct tuning parameter between competing topological states. At fillings associated with Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states, our calculations show that interband mixing shifts the optimal quantum geometry regime without suppressing non-Abelian topological order under screened Coulomb interaction. Our results establish higher vortexable moiré bands as a tunable platform for exploring geometry-driven multiband topological phases at zero magnetic field.
