Abstract

Higher vortexability is often viewed as a route to topological flat bands with higher-Landau-level-like quantum geometry. Here we emphasize a complementary perspective: it provides a tunable multiband structure in which wave function geometry can be varied continuously while the band dispersion, degeneracy, and topology remain fixed. We perform systematic exact-diagonalization studies of many-body phases in fractionally filled higher vortexable moiré systems, retaining the full flat-band Hilbert space rather than projecting onto a single band. The multiband treatment reveals a cascade of Abelian and non-Abelian phases at zero magnetic field, including integer and fractional exciton insulators, Abelian fractional Chern insulators, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states. At fixed filling, different phases are connected through transitions or crossovers driven solely by changes in wave function geometry, highlighting quantum geometry itself as a direct tuning parameter between competing topological states. At fillings associated with Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states, our calculations show that interband mixing shifts the optimal quantum geometry regime without suppressing non-Abelian topological order under screened Coulomb interaction. Our results establish higher vortexable moiré bands as a tunable platform for exploring geometry-driven multiband topological phases at zero magnetic field.

Parafermions in moiré minibands

Hui Liu, Raül Perea‐Causín, Emil J. Bergholtz

Abstract Moiré materials provide a remarkably tunable platform for topological and strongly correlated quantum phases of matter. Very recently, the first Abelian fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) at zero magnetic field have been experimentally demonstrated, and it has been theoretically predicted that non-Abelian states with Majorana fermion excitations may be realized in the nearly dispersionless minibands of these systems. Here, we provide telltale evidence based on many-body exact diagonalization for the even more exotic possibility of moiré-based non-Abelian FCIs exhibiting Fibonacci parafermion excitations. In particular, we obtain low-energy quantum numbers, spectral flow, many-body Chern numbers, and entanglement spectra consistent with the $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{3}$$ Z 3 Read–Rezayi parafermion phase in an exemplary moiré system with tunable quantum geometry. Our results hint towards the robustness of moiré-based parafermions and encourage the pursuit in moiré systems of these non-Abelian quasiparticles that are superior candidates for topological quantum computing.

Quantum-geometry-driven Mott transitions and magnetism

Jixun K. Ding, Martin Claassen

Quantum geometry quantifies how the single-particle Bloch wavefunction changes in phase and amplitude across the Brillouin Zone. In multi-orbital systems where bands have strongly mixed orbital composition, quantum geometry plays a vital role in determining the ground state and low-energy properties of interacting electronic systems. In this work, we show that Mott metal-insulator transitions, as well as transitions between different magnetic orders within the Mott insulating phase, can be driven by the quantum geometry of the underlying Bloch band, thereby providing a mechanism complementary to conventional bandwidth-tuned Mott transitions. By studying the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model using exact diagonalization, we demonstrate that in in half-filled and topologically-trivial bands, quantum geometric properties of the Bloch states alone can act as a tuning knob for Mott metal-to-insulator and affect the competition between ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism. We show that both transitions may be heuristically understood via non-local Coulomb scattering in a basis of exponentially localized Wannier functions. These results highlight the role of quantum geometry beyond topological settings as a governing principle for conventional Mott and magnetic physics in multi-orbital and moiré materials.

Fractional Chern Insulators in Twisted Bilayer Optical Lattices

Yan-Bin Yang, Jiong-Hao Wang, Shicheng Ma +1 more

Twisted bilayer materials provide a versatile platform for realizing correlated topological states. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in twisted bilayer optical lattices, we investigate the emergence of fractional topological phases in such systems. For experimentally realistic parameters, the single-particle spectrum hosts a pair of quasi-degenerate nearly flat moiré bands. We show using self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that atomic interactions spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, lift the quasi-degeneracy, and generate an isolated nearly flat band with a nonzero Chern number. At fractional filling, exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian projected to this band reveals a threefold degenerate ground-state manifold and a characteristic particle entanglement spectrum, providing strong evidence for a fractional Chern insulator. The resulting many-body gap is of order \(10^{-3}E_R\), corresponding to a nanokelvin energy scale accessible to state-of-the-art cold-atom experiments. Our scheme requires neither spin-orbit coupling, as in transition metal dichalcogenides, nor a finite magnetic field, as in existing twisted-bilayer-graphene experiments, providing a highly tunable route to strongly correlated topological phases in twisted bilayer optical lattices.

Quantum-geometry stabilization of dilute fractional Chern insulators

Ying-Xing Ding, Limin Zhang, LI Wen-tong +2 more

Fractional Chern insulators have attracted broad interest as lattice analogs of fractional quantum Hall states without Landau levels. However, low-filling fractional Chern insulators are fragile because charge-ordered phases can compete strongly with the fractional topological liquid. Here, we propose a center-decorated kagome model, motivated by geometry-tunable artificial lattices, in which the center-site hopping $t_2$ provides a direct knob for the quantum geometry of an isolated $C=1$ flat band. Here quantum geometry refers to the Berry curvature and Fubini--Study metric, which determine the form factors of interactions projected into the Chern band. Exact diagonalization shows that tuning $t_2$ away from the flatness-optimized kagome limit reduces the trace-condition deviation, suppresses competing charge order, and enhances the many-body stability at both $ν=1/3$ and the more fragile $ν=1/5$ filling. At $ν=1/5$, this stability-enhanced window persists under nearby interaction profiles, including variations of the dominant third-neighbor repulsion and weak nearest-neighbor admixtures. Low-energy spectra, spectral flow, quasihole and entanglement counting, static structure factors, and the quantized total many-body Chern number $C_{\mathrm{tot}}=1$ consistently support Laughlin-like fractional Chern insulators. These results identify quantum-geometry engineering as a route to stabilizing dilute fractional Chern insulators beyond band-flatness optimization alone.

Fractional Chern insulator with higher Chern number in optical lattice

Ding, Ying-Xing, Li, Wen-Tong, Zhang, Li-Min +4 more

Fractional Chern insulators arise in topologically nontrivial flat bands, characterized by an integer Chern number C that corresponds to the number of dissipationless edge states in the non-interacting regime. Higher Chern numbers can replicate the physics of higher Landau levels and often confer enhanced topological robustness. However, realizing correlated fractional phases with higher Chern numbers in such flat band systems remains challenging. Here, we propose an interlayer coupling scheme to generate higher Chern numbers in a flat-band system, where the interlayer coupling transforms two C = 1 bands in a bilayer checkerboard lattice into a single flat band with C = 2 by lifting their degeneracy and merging their topological indices. Exact diagonalization calculation reveals that this engineered band hosts two fractional Chern insulator states with C = 2/3 and 2/5, respectively. An experimental setup is proposed to simulate these states using cold alkaline-earth-like atoms in an effective bilayer optical lattice. Our work provides a general and widely applicable strategy for constructing higher Chern number flat bands, opening a pathway to explore exotic fractional quantum phases.

Model Fractional Quantum Hall States on Lattices: Exact Parent Hamiltonians and Routes to Realization

Guangyue Ji, Jinjie Zhang

Recent advances in engineered quantum platforms have enabled the realization of bosonic Laughlin states at $ν=1/2$ and brought non-Abelian topological phases within experimental reach. A central theoretical challenge is to develop a unified framework connecting lattice fractional quantum Hall (FQH) model states, exact parent Hamiltonians, and experimentally accessible interactions. We systematically construct Hermitian parent Hamiltonians for which continuum lowest Landau level (LLL) model states sampled on lattice sites are exact zero modes. Using these model manifolds as quantitative references, we find that, within the projected lattice LLL at the flux densities studied, short-range density interactions stabilize Laughlin ground-state manifolds at $ν=1/3$ and $1/4$, while two-body onsite repulsion supports a Moore--Read triplet at $ν=1$. Full multiband calculations reveal a sharp contrast: the Laughlin manifolds remain robust against interband mixing on the studied tori, whereas the Moore--Read triplet becomes less spectrally isolated and eventually undergoes a level crossing with competing states near the interband scale. Our framework provides a theoretical foundation for using lattice model states to guide the search for experimentally accessible Abelian and non-Abelian FQH states.
