Abstract

Twisted bilayer materials provide a versatile platform for realizing correlated topological states. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in twisted bilayer optical lattices, we investigate the emergence of fractional topological phases in such systems. For experimentally realistic parameters, the single-particle spectrum hosts a pair of quasi-degenerate nearly flat moiré bands. We show using self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that atomic interactions spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry, lift the quasi-degeneracy, and generate an isolated nearly flat band with a nonzero Chern number. At fractional filling, exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian projected to this band reveals a threefold degenerate ground-state manifold and a characteristic particle entanglement spectrum, providing strong evidence for a fractional Chern insulator. The resulting many-body gap is of order \(10^{-3}E_R\), corresponding to a nanokelvin energy scale accessible to state-of-the-art cold-atom experiments. Our scheme requires neither spin-orbit coupling, as in transition metal dichalcogenides, nor a finite magnetic field, as in existing twisted-bilayer-graphene experiments, providing a highly tunable route to strongly correlated topological phases in twisted bilayer optical lattices.

Fractional Chern insulator with higher Chern number in optical lattice

Ding, Ying-Xing, Li, Wen-Tong, Zhang, Li-Min +4 more

Fractional Chern insulators arise in topologically nontrivial flat bands, characterized by an integer Chern number C that corresponds to the number of dissipationless edge states in the non-interacting regime. Higher Chern numbers can replicate the physics of higher Landau levels and often confer enhanced topological robustness. However, realizing correlated fractional phases with higher Chern numbers in such flat band systems remains challenging. Here, we propose an interlayer coupling scheme to generate higher Chern numbers in a flat-band system, where the interlayer coupling transforms two C = 1 bands in a bilayer checkerboard lattice into a single flat band with C = 2 by lifting their degeneracy and merging their topological indices. Exact diagonalization calculation reveals that this engineered band hosts two fractional Chern insulator states with C = 2/3 and 2/5, respectively. An experimental setup is proposed to simulate these states using cold alkaline-earth-like atoms in an effective bilayer optical lattice. Our work provides a general and widely applicable strategy for constructing higher Chern number flat bands, opening a pathway to explore exotic fractional quantum phases.

Fractional Chern insulator candidate on a twisted bilayer checkerboard lattice

Jia-Zheng Ma, Rui-Zhen Huang, Guoyi Zhu +2 more

We investigate a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) candidate arising from moir\'e bands with higher Chern number $C=2$ on a magic-angle twisted bilayer checkerboard lattice (MATBCB). There are two nearly flat low lying bands in the single-particle energy spectrum under the first magic angle $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\approx}1.{608}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ and chiral limit. We find that MATBCB hosts a nearly uniform Berry curvature distribution and exhibits tiny violation of quantum geometric trace condition in the first moir\'e Brillouin zone (mBZ), indicating that there is a nearly ideal quantum geometry in MATBCB in single-particle level. Turning on projected Coulomb interactions, we perform exact diagonalization and find a 10-fold ground-state quasidegeneracy in many-body energy spectrum with filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/5$. The 10-fold quasidegenerate ground states further show spectra flow under flux pumping. By diagnosing the particle entanglement spectrum (PES) of the ground states, we obtain a clear PES gap and quasihole state counting consistent with Halperin spin singlet generalized Pauli principle, suggesting that a $C=2$ Abelian fractional Chern insulator is realized in this system.

Spin-Twisted Optical Lattices: Tunable Flat Bands and Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superfluids

Xi-Wang Luo, Chuanwei Zhang

Moiré superlattices in twisted bilayer graphene and transition-metal dichalcogenides have emerged as a powerful tool for engineering novel band structures and quantum phases of two-dimensional quantum materials. Here we investigate Moiré physics emerging from twisting two independent hexagonal optical lattices of atomic (pseudo-)spin states (instead of bilayers) that exhibit remarkably different physics from twisted bilayer graphene. We employ a momentum-space tight-binding calculation that includes all range real-space tunnelings and show that all twist angles θ≲6° can become magic and support gapped flat bands. Because of the greatly enhanced density of states near the flat bands, the system can be driven to superfluidity by weak attractive interaction. Strikingly, the superfluid phase corresponds to a Larkin-Ovchinnikov state with finite momentum pairing that results from the interplay between flat bands and interspin interactions in the unique single-layer spin-twisted lattice. Our work may pave the way for exploring novel quantum phases and twistronics in cold atomic systems.

Quantum phase diagram and non-Abelian Moore-Read state in double twisted bilayer graphene

Sen Niu, Yang Peng, D. N. Sheng

Experimental realizations of Abelian fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) have demonstrated the potentials of moiré systems in synthesizing exotic quantum phases. Remarkably, twisted multilayer graphene system may also host non-Abelian states competing with charge density wave under Coulomb interaction. Here, through larger scale exact diagonalization simulations, we map out the quantum phase diagram for $ν=1/2$ system with electrons occupying the lowest moirè band of the double twisted bilayer graphene. By increasing the system size, we find the ground state has six-fold near degeneracy and with a finite spectral gap separating the ground states from excited states across a broad range of parameters. Further computation of many-body Chern number establish the topological order of the state, and we rule out possibility of charge density wave orders based on featureless density structure factor. Furthermore, we inspect the particle-cut entanglement spectrum to identify the topological state as a non-Abelian Moore-Read state. Combining all the above evidences we conclude that Moore-Read ground state dominates the quantum phase diagram for the double twisted bilayer graphene system for a broad range of coupling strength with realistic Coulomb interaction.

Floquet fractional Chern insulators and competing phases in twisted bilayer graphene

Peng-Sheng Hu, Yihan Zhou, Zhao Liu

We study the many-body physics in twisted bilayer graphene coupled to periodic driving of a circularly polarized light when electron-electron interactions are taken into account. In the limit of high driving frequency \Omega Ω , we use Floquet theory to formulate the system by an effective static Hamiltonian truncated to the order of \Omega^{-2} Ω − 2 , which consists of a single-electron part and the screened Coulomb interaction. We numerically simulate this effective Hamiltonian by extensive exact diagonalization in the parameter space spanned by the twist angle and the driving strength. Remarkably, in a wide region of the parameter space, we identify Floquet fractional Chern insulator states in the partially filled Floquet valence bands. We characterize these topologically ordered states by ground-state degeneracy, spectral flow, and entanglement spectrum. In regions of the parameter space where fractional Chern insulator states are absent, we find topologically trivial charge density waves and band-dispersion-induced Fermi liquids which strongly compete with fractional Chern insulator states.

Realization of topological Mott insulator in a twisted bilayer graphene lattice model

Bin-Bin Chen, Yuan Da Liao, Ziyu Chen +4 more

Abstract Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has recently become a thriving material platform realizing correlated electron phenomena taking place within its topological flat bands. Several numerical and analytical methods have been applied to understand the correlated phases therein, revealing some similarity with the quantum Hall physics. In this work, we provide a Mott-Hubbard perspective for the TBG system. Employing the large-scale density matrix renormalization group on the lattice model containing the projected Coulomb interactions only, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition between the insulating stripe phase and the quantum anomalous Hall state with the Chern number of ±1. Our results not only shed light on the mechanism of the quantum anomalous Hall state discovered at three-quarters filling, but also provide an example of the topological Mott insulator, i.e., the quantum anomalous Hall state in the strong coupling limit.
