Chiral-antichiral pairs of non-Abelian Hall states, like the Pfaffian, Read-Rezayi and NASS states, can be used to model two-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulators. Their stability was shown to be associated to the presence of a Z2 anomaly and characterized by the same Z2 index introduced for free fermion and Abelian systems. In this work, we continue the stability analysis by providing the form of time-reversal invariant interactions that gap the non-Abelian edge excitations. Our approach is based on the description of non-Abelian states as projections of corresponding “parent ” Abelian states. ar X iv
The non-chiral edge excitations of quantum spin Hall systems and topological insu-lators are described by means of their partition function. The stability of topological phases protected by time-reversal symmetry is rediscussed in this context and put in relation with the existence of discrete anomalies and the lack of modular invariance of the partition function. The Z2 characterization of stable topological insulators is extended to systems with interacting and non-Abelian edge excitations. ar X iv
We show that the decorated honeycomb (star) lattice supports a number of topological insulating phases with a nontrivial
Z2 invariant and time-reversal symmetry protected gapless edge modes. We investigate the stability of these phases with respect to various symmetry-breaking perturbations and demonstrate the connection to the recent discovery of an exactly solvable
S=1/2 chiral spin-liquid model [Yao and Kivelson, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 247203 (2007)] with non-Abelian and Abelian excitations on the same lattice at strong interaction strength. Our work highlights the relationship between noninteracting topological band insulators and strongly interacting topologically ordered spin systems, and points to promising avenues for enlarging the number of known examples of both.
We present a field theoretical analysis of the 2 + 1 dimensional BF model with boundary in the Abelian and the non-Abelian case based on Symanzik's separability condition. Our aim is to characterize the low-energy properties of time reversal invariant topological insulators. In both cases, on the edges, we obtain Kač–Moody algebras with opposite chiralities reflecting the time reversal invariance of the theory. While the Abelian case presents an apparent arbitrariness in the value of the central charge, the physics on the boundary of the non-Abelian theory is completely determined by time reversal and gauge symmetry. The discussion of the non-Abelian BF model shows that time reversal symmetry on the boundary implies the existence of counter-propagating chiral currents.
The surfaces of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) are generally described as Dirac metals, with a single Dirac cone. It was previously believed that a gapped surface implied breaking of either time-reversal
T or
U(1) charge conservation symmetry. Here, we discuss a possibility in the presence of interactions, a surface phase that preserves all symmetries but is nevertheless gapped and insulating. Then, the surface must develop topological order of a kind that can not be realized in a two-dimensional (2D) system with the same symmetries. We discuss candidate surface states, non-Abelian quantum Hall states which, when realized in 2D, have ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{xy}=\frac{1}{2}$ and hence break
T symmetry. However, by constructing an exactly soluble 3D lattice model, we show they can be realized as
T-symmetric surface states. The corresponding 3D phases are confined, and have $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ensuremath{\pi}$ magnetoelectric response. Two candidate states have the same 12-particle topological order, the (Read-Moore) Pfaffian state with the neutral sector reversed, which we term T-Pfaffian topological order, but differ in their
T transformation. Although we are unable to connect either of these states directly to the superconducting TI surface, we argue that one of them describes the 3D TI surface, while the other differs from it by a bosonic topological phase. We also discuss the 24-particle Pfaffian-antisemion topological order (which can be connected to the superconducting TI surface) and demonstrate that it can be realized as a
T-symmetric surface state.
We introduce a non-Abelian kagome lattice model that has both time-reversal and inversion symmetries and study the flat band physics and topological phases of this model. Due to the coexistence of both time-reversal and inversion symmetries, the energy bands consist of three doubly degenerate bands whose energy and conditions for the presence of flat bands could be obtained analytically, allowing us to tune the flat band with respect to the other two dispersive bands from the top to the middle and then to the bottom of the three bands. We further study the gapped phases of the model and show that they belong to the same phase as the band gaps only close at discrete points of the parameter space, making any two gapped phases adiabatically connected to each other without closing the band gap. Using the Pfaffian approach based on the time-reversal symmetry and parity characterization from the inversion symmetry, we calculate the bulk topological invariants and demonstrate that the unique gapped phases belong to the
Z2 quantum spin Hall phase, which is further confirmed by the edge state calculations.
