Photon correlations in multimode waveguides

Abstract

We consider the propagation of classical and nonclassical light in multimode optical waveguides. We focus on the evolution of the few-photon correlation functions, which, much as the light-intensity distribution in such systems, evolve in a periodic manner, culminating in the ``revival'' of the initial correlation pattern at the end of each period. It is found that when the input state possesses nontrivial symmetries, the correlation revival period can be longer than that of the intensity, and thus the same intensity pattern can display different correlation patterns. We experimentally demonstrate this effect for classical, pseudothermal light, and compare the results with the predictions for nonclassical, quantum light.

Quantum and Classical Correlations in Waveguide Lattices

Yaron Bromberg, Yoav Lahini, Roberto Morandotti +1 more

We study quantum and classical Hanbury Brown-Twiss correlations in waveguide lattices. We develop a theory for the propagation of photon pairs in the lattice, predicting the emergence of nontrivial quantum interferences unique to lattice systems. Experimentally, we observe the classical counterpart of these interferences using intensity-correlation measurements. We discuss the correspondence between the classical and quantum correlations, and consider path-entangled input states which do not have a classical analogue. Our results demonstrate that waveguide lattices can be used as a robust and highly controllable tool for manipulating quantum states, and offer new ways of studying the quantum properties of light.

Exact dynamics of multimode periodic input states in coupled waveguide arrays

Atmadev Rai, Amit Rai

Abstract In this work, we investigate the quantum state reconstruction of the periodic input state in a 1-D waveguide array. In particular, we consider a single-photon multimode entangled W-state with different periodicities as an input to the array and study the effect of periodicity in the output. For comparison, we also study separable single photon periodic input states. We study the evolution of average photon number and the fidelity of the periodic input state and give the exact solution to investigate the revival of single photon multimode periodic input. Our solution is valid for any number of waveguides in the array. Our findings show the revival of the average photon number and almost complete quantum state reconstruction of the initial multimode entangled state for certain periodicities. The results reported here are significant because multimode-entangled states are essential resources for various applications in the physical implementation of photonic quantum technologies.

Phase-space distribution functions for photon propagation in waveguides coupled to a qubit

O. O. Chumak, E. V. Stolyarov

We investigate propagation of few-photon pulses in waveguides coupled to a two-level system by means of the method of distribution functions in coordinate-momentum space that provides a detailed description of photon systems. We find that the distribution function of the transmitted pulse can be negative for the nonclassical input (i.e., single-photon Fock state). This reveals the quasiprobability nature of photon distribution. Analytical expressions for photon densities in the momentum space as well as in the coordinate space are obtained for the mentioned single-photon Gaussian input. We also study the evolution of the multimode coherent-state input for an arbitrary photon number. Time-dependent differential equations describing average densities and fluctuations of outgoing photons are derived and solved. The influence of the number of input photons, pulse width, and radiation-atom interaction strength on the statistical properties of the fluctuations is investigated.

Few-photon transport via a multimode nonlinear cavity: Theory and applications

Yunkai Wang, Kejie Fang

Few-photon transport via waveguide-coupled local quantum systems has attracted extensive theoretical and experimental studies. Most of the study has focused on atomic or atomic-like local quantum systems due to their strong light-matter interaction useful for quantum applications. Here we study few-photon transport via a waveguide-coupled multimode optical cavity with second-order bulk nonlinearity. We develop a Feynman diagram approach and compute the scattering matrix of the one- and two-photon transport. Based on the calculated scattering matrix, we show highly nonclassical photonic effects, including photon blockade and $\ensuremath{\pi}$-conditional phase shift, are achievable in the waveguide-coupled multimode optical cavity system via quantum interference and linear response engineering. Our results might lead to significant applications of quantum photonic circuits in all-optical quantum information processing and quantum network protocols.

Photon correlations in two-dimensional waveguide arrays and their classical estimate

Robert Keil, Alexander Szameit, Felix Dreisow +3 more

Interference effects of photon pairs propagating through two-dimensional lattices of evanescently coupled waveguides are theoretically analyzed for input states of independent and path-entangled photons. Their correlation unveils characteristic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences as well as more complex phenomena unique to these structures. Furthermore, purely classical states of light are used to simulate these quantum interferences in intensity correlation experiments. The results suggest that waveguide arrays can be employed as convenient devices for manipulating quantum states of light.

New Evidence for a Nonclassical Behavior of Laser Multimode Light

Michael V. Lebedev, A. A. Demenev, A.L. Parakhonsky +1 more

In this work, we present new experimental evidence of a nonclassical behavior of a multimode Fabry–Perot (FP) semiconductor laser by the measurements of intensity correlation functions. Due to the multimode quantum state occurrence, instead of expected correlations between the intensities of the laser modes (a semiclassical theory), their anticorrelations were revealed.
