Broadband sum-frequency generation using cascaded processes via chirped quasi-phase-matching

Abstract

An efficient broadband sum-frequency generation (SFG) technique using the two cascaded optical parametric processes ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{3}={\ensuremath{\omega}}_{1}+{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{2}$ and ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{4}={\ensuremath{\omega}}_{1}+{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{3}$ is proposed. The technique uses chirped quasi-phase-matched gratings, which, in the undepleted pump approximation, make SFG analogous to adiabatic population transfer in three-state systems with crossing energies in quantum physics. If the local modulation period first makes the phase match occur for ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{3}$ and then for ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{4}$ SFG processes then the energy is converted adiabatically to the ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{4}$ field. Efficient SFG of the ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{4}$ field is also possible by the opposite direction of the local modulation sweep; then transient SFG of the ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{3}$ field is strongly reduced. Most of these features remain valid in the nonlinear regime of depleted pump.

Efficient broadband sum and difference frequency generation with a single chirped quasi-phase-matching crystal

Andon A. Rangelov

We propose an efficient broadband frequency generation technique for two collinear optical parametric processes $ω_3=ω_1+ω_2$ and $ω_4=ω_1-ω_2$. It exploits chirped quasi-phase-matched gratings, which in the undepleted pump approximation regime perform population transfer that is analogous to adiabatic population transfer in a three-state ``vee'' quantum system. The energy of the input fields is transferred adiabatically either into $ω_3$ or $ω_4$ field, depending on which of the two phase matchings occurs first by the local modulation period in the crystal. One can switch the output between $ω_3$ and $ω_4$ by inverting the direction of the local modulation sweep, which corresponds to a rotation of the crystal by angle $π$

Implementing Control for Sum Frequency Generation by Using a Chirped Quasi-Phase-Matched Crystal

Baihong Li, Tao Zhang, Zhengxin Yan +3 more

Based on the dressed state formalism, we obtain the adiabatic criterion of sum frequency generation(SFG).We show that the key points of energy conversion for sum frequency conversion correspond to the diabatic points. The high efficiency and broadband sum frequency conversion that we desired can be obtained by using a chirped quasi-phase-matched(QPM) crystal. Therefore,we can control SFG manually.

Comparison of cascaded χ2 wavelength conversions in quasi-phase-matched (QPM) waveguides

Bo Chen, Chang‐Qing Xu

Cascaded second-order nonlinear interaction (&chi(2));based wavelength conversion technique has attracted much attention due to its unique characteristics such as low noise and broadband, which are critical in fiber communication networks. In this report, wavelength conversions based on the newly proposed SFG-DFG (sum frequency generation - difference frequency generation) and conventional SHG-DFG (second harmonic generation - difference frequency generation) are studied and compared both experimentally and theoretically in a LiNbO3 quasi-phase matched (QPM) waveguide. It is shown that the same conversion efficiency can be achieved by employing two pump sources with only half power each (P1, P2) in the SFG-DFG scheme as compared with the SHG-DFG scheme with a single higher power pump beam (P=P1+P2). It is shown that the cascaded SFG-DFG based wavelength conversion has a larger 3-dB pump tolerance bandwidth. The theoretical results are consistent well with the experimental ones. It is found that the pump wavelength difference can be separated by a span as large as 75 nm, while 3-dB signal conversion efficiency is retained in a 45 mm-long device. It is also exhibited that tolerance of temperature for the cascaded SFG-DFG remains the same as that of the cascaded SHG-DFG based devices. The results show that the SFG-DFG wavelength conversion scheme is very attractive for practical applications.

Cascaded wavelength conversions based on sum-frequency generation and difference-frequency generation

Chang‐Qing Xu, Bo Chen

A novel wavelength conversion scheme based on cascaded sum-frequency generation (SFG) and difference-frequency generation (DFG) is proposed and demonstrated in a MgO-doped LiNbO3 quasi-phase-matched waveguide. In this scheme, two pump wavelengths are set outside the communication band. It is shown that the same conversion efficiency can be achieved by use of two pump sources with lower output power (P1, P2) in this scheme compared with the conventional cascaded wavelength conversion technique based on second-harmonic generation and DFG with a single higher-power pump beam (P = P1 + P2) that is due to the use of a larger SFG nonlinear coefficient. The results significantly influence the selection of a suitable nonlinear interaction scheme for practical applications.

Efficient and broadband fourth-harmonic generation in quasi-phase-matched crystals

Yu Zhang, Yasong Chen, Xuening Wang +3 more

We propose an adiabatic scheme for cascaded fourth-harmonic generation (FHG) in chirped dual-period quasi-phase-matched (QPM) crystals, where adiabatic evolution is introduced into the multi-step frequency conversion process. By engineering two chirped QPM gratings for the fundamental-to-second-harmonic ( FF → SH ) and second-to-fourth-harmonic ( SH → FH ) interactions, efficient harmonic generation is achieved through a continuous adiabatic passage in phase-mismatch space, rather than discrete phase-matching conditions in conventional QPM schemes. This approach enables robust and tunable energy transfer among harmonics, allowing controllable generation of second- and fourth-harmonic signals. Numerical results show a maximum FHG efficiency of 94% and a tunable bandwidth of ∼13 nm under realistic conditions. The tunability originates from the controlled shift of QPM resonances along the propagation direction.

Wavelength conversion of incoherent light by sum-frequency generation

Shin Arahira, Hitoshi Murai

In this paper, we reveal that some kinds of optical nonlinearities are further enhanced when incoherent light, instead of a laser, is used as a pump light. This idea was confirmed both theoretically and experimentally in the case of sum-frequency generation (SFG) using the optical second nonlinearity. The conversion efficiency of the SFG with incoherent light pumping increased as the bandwidth of the incoherent pump light decreased, finally reaching twice the conversion efficiency of conventional second harmonic generation (SHG) by laser pumping. This method dramatically relaxes the severe requirements of phase matching in the nonlinear optical process. The conversion efficiency became less sensitive to misalignment of the wavelength of pump light and also of device operation temperature when the bandwidth of the incoherent pump light was sufficiently broad, although the improvement of the conversion efficiency had an inverse relationship with the insensitivity to the phase-matching condition. The temperature tuning range was enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude in comparison with the conventional SHG method. As an example of a promising application of this new idea, we performed the generation of quantum entangled photon-pairs using cascaded optical nonlinearities (SFG and the subsequent spontaneous parametric down conversion) in a single periodically poled LiNbO3 waveguide device, in which the incoherent light was used as the pump source for both the parametric processes. We have achieved high fidelity exceeding 99% in quantum-state tomography experiments.
