Abstract

Recently, properties of collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons have attracted considerable attention. We study an extension of the ``golden chain model,'' where two- and three-body interactions are competing. Upon fine tuning the interaction, the model is integrable. This provides an additional integrable point of the model, on top of the integrable point, when the three-body interaction is absent. To solve the model, we construct a new, integrable height model, in the spirit of the restricted solid-on-solid model solved by Andrews et al. [J. Stat. Phys. 35, 193 (1984)]. The heights in our model live on both the sites and links of the square lattice. The model is solved by means of the corner transfer matrix method. We find a connection between local height probabilities and characters of a conformal field theory governing the critical properties at the integrable point. In the antiferromagnetic regime, the criticality is described by the ${Z}_{k}$ parafermion conformal field theory, while the $\frac{\text{su}{(2)}_{1}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{su}{(2)}_{1}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{su}{(2)}_{k\ensuremath{-}2}}{\text{su}{(2)}_{k}}$ coset conformal field theory describes the ferromagnetic regime.

Local height probabilities in a composite Andrews–Baxter–Forrester model

Jaakko Nissinen, Eddy Ardonne

We study the local height probabilities in a composite height model, derived from the restricted solid-on-solid model introduced by Andrews, Baxter and Forrester, and their connection with conformal field theory characters. The obtained conformal field theories also describe the critical behavior of the model at two different critical points. In addition, at criticality, the model is equivalent to a one-dimensional chain of anyons, subject to competing two- and three-body interactions. The anyonic-chain interpretation provided the original motivation to introduce the composite height model, and by obtaining the critical behavior of the composite height model, the critical behavior of the anyonic chains is established as well. Depending on the overall sign of the Hamiltonian, this critical behavior is described by a diagonal coset-model, generalizing the minimal models for one sign, and by Fateev–Zamolodchikov parafermions for the other.

TheD(D3)-anyon chain: integrable boundary conditions and excitation spectra

Peter E. Finch, Holger Frahm

Chains of interacting non-Abelian anyons with local interactions invariant under the action of the Drinfeld double of the dihedral group D 3 are constructed. Formulated as a spin chain the Hamiltonians are generated from commuting transfer matrices of an integrable vertex model for periodic and braided as well as open boundaries. A different anyonic model with the same local Hamiltonian is obtained within the fusion path formulation. This model is shown to be related to an integrable fusion interaction round the face model. Bulk and surface properties of the anyon chain are computed from the Bethe equations for the spin chain. The low-energy effective theories and operator content of the models (in both the spin chain and fusion path formulation) are identified from analytical and numerical studies of the finite-size spectra. For all boundary conditions considered the continuum theory is found to be a product of two conformal field theories. Depending on the coupling constants the factors can be a Z 4 parafermion or a minimal model.

Z n clock models and chains of so ( n ) 2 non-Abelian anyons: symmetries, integrable points and low energy properties

Peter E. Finch, Michael Flohr, Holger Frahm

Abstract We study two families of quantum models which have been used previously to investigate the effect of topological symmetries in one-dimensional correlated matter. Various striking similarities are observed between certain Z n quantum clock models, spin chains generalizing the Ising model, and chains of non-Abelian anyons constructed from the so ( n ) 2 fusion category for odd n , both subject to periodic boundary conditions. In spite of the differences between these two types of quantum chains, e.g. their Hilbert spaces being spanned by tensor products of local spin states or fusion paths of anyons, the symmetries of the lattice models are shown to be closely related. Furthermore, under a suitable mapping between the parameters describing the interaction between spins and anyons the respective Hamiltonians share part of their energy spectrum (although their degeneracies may differ). This spin-anyon correspondence can be extended by fine-tuning of the coupling constants leading to exactly solvable models. We show that the algebraic structures underlying the integrability of the clock models and the anyon chain are the same. For n = 3,5,7 we perform an extensive finite size study—both numerical and based on the exact solution—of these models to map out their ground state phase diagram and to identify the effective field theories describing their low energy behaviour. We observe that the continuum limit at the integrable points can be described by rational conformal field theories with extended symmetry algebras which can be related to the discrete ones of the lattice models.

One-dimensional itinerant interacting non-Abelian anyons

Didier Poilblanc, Adrian E. Feiguin, Matthias Troyer +2 more

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains. We focus on itinerant Ising (Majorana) and Fibonacci anyons, which are, respectively, related to SU${(2)}_{2}$ and SU${(2)}_{3}$ anyons and also, respectively, describe quasiparticles of the Moore-Read and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$-Read-Rezayi fractional quantum Hall states. Following the derivation of the electronic large-U effective Hubbard model, we derive effective anyonic $t$-$J$ models for the low-energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (neutral) anyonic degrees of freedom---a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum can be performed by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors. The anyonic sector is that of a squeezed chain of localized interacting anyons and, hence, is described by the same conformal field theory (CFT), with central charge $c=1/2$ for Ising anyons and $c=7/10$ or $c=4/5$ for Fibonacci anyons with antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling, respectively. The charge sector is the spectrum of a chain of hard-core bosons subject to phase shifts which coincide with the momenta of the combined anyonic eigenstates, revealing a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization. The combined central charge extracted from the entanglement entropy between segments of the chain is shown to be $1+c$, where $c$ is the central charge of the underlying CFT of the localized anyon (squeezed) chain.

Interacting Anyons in Topological Quantum Liquids: The Golden Chain

Adrian E. Feiguin, Simon Trebst, Andreas W. W. Ludwig +4 more

We discuss generalizations of quantum spin Hamiltonians using anyonic degrees of freedom. The simplest model for interacting anyons energetically favors neighboring anyons to fuse into the trivial ("identity") channel, similar to the quantum Heisenberg model favoring neighboring spins to form spin singlets. Numerical simulations of a chain of Fibonacci anyons show that the model is critical with a dynamical critical exponent z=1, and described by a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. An exact mapping of the anyonic chain onto the 2D tricritical Ising model is given using the restricted-solid-on-solid representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. The gaplessness of the chain is shown to have topological origin.

Microscopic models of interacting Yang–Lee anyons

Eddy Ardonne, Jan Gukelberger, A W W Ludwig +2 more

Collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons have recently been studied mostly in the context of certain fractional quantum Hall states, such as the Moore–Read state proposed to describe the physics of the quantum Hall plateau at filling fraction ν=5/2. In this paper, we further expand this line of research and present non-unitary generalizations of interacting anyon models. In particular, we introduce the notion of Yang–Lee anyons, discuss their relation to the so-called 'Gaffnian' quantum Hall wave function and describe an elementary model for their interactions. A one-dimensional (1D) version of this model—a non-unitary generalization of the original golden chain model—can be fully understood in terms of an exact algebraic solution and numerical diagonalization. We discuss the gapless theories of these chain models for general su(2) k anyonic theories and their Galois conjugates. We further introduce and solve a 1D version of the Levin–Wen model for non-unitary Yang–Lee anyons.
