Abstract

Collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons have recently been studied mostly in the context of certain fractional quantum Hall states, such as the Moore–Read state proposed to describe the physics of the quantum Hall plateau at filling fraction ν=5/2. In this paper, we further expand this line of research and present non-unitary generalizations of interacting anyon models. In particular, we introduce the notion of Yang–Lee anyons, discuss their relation to the so-called 'Gaffnian' quantum Hall wave function and describe an elementary model for their interactions. A one-dimensional (1D) version of this model—a non-unitary generalization of the original golden chain model—can be fully understood in terms of an exact algebraic solution and numerical diagonalization. We discuss the gapless theories of these chain models for general su(2) k anyonic theories and their Galois conjugates. We further introduce and solve a 1D version of the Levin–Wen model for non-unitary Yang–Lee anyons.

One-dimensional itinerant interacting non-Abelian anyons

Didier Poilblanc, Adrian E. Feiguin, Matthias Troyer +2 more

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains. We focus on itinerant Ising (Majorana) and Fibonacci anyons, which are, respectively, related to SU${(2)}_{2}$ and SU${(2)}_{3}$ anyons and also, respectively, describe quasiparticles of the Moore-Read and ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$-Read-Rezayi fractional quantum Hall states. Following the derivation of the electronic large-U effective Hubbard model, we derive effective anyonic $t$-$J$ models for the low-energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (neutral) anyonic degrees of freedom---a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum can be performed by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors. The anyonic sector is that of a squeezed chain of localized interacting anyons and, hence, is described by the same conformal field theory (CFT), with central charge $c=1/2$ for Ising anyons and $c=7/10$ or $c=4/5$ for Fibonacci anyons with antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling, respectively. The charge sector is the spectrum of a chain of hard-core bosons subject to phase shifts which coincide with the momenta of the combined anyonic eigenstates, revealing a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization. The combined central charge extracted from the entanglement entropy between segments of the chain is shown to be $1+c$, where $c$ is the central charge of the underlying CFT of the localized anyon (squeezed) chain.

Quantum spin ladders of non-Abelian anyons

Didier Poilblanc, Andreas W. W. Ludwig, Simon Trebst +1 more

Quantum ladder models, consisting of coupled chains, form intriguing systems bridging one and two dimensions and have been well studied in the context of quantum magnets and fermionic systems. Here we consider ladder systems made of more exotic quantum mechanical degrees of freedom, so-called non-Abelian anyons, which can be thought of as certain quantum deformations of ordinary SU(2) spins. Such non-Abelian anyons occur as quasiparticle excitations in topological quantum fluids, including ${p}_{x}+i{p}_{y}$ superconductors, certain fractional quantum Hall states, and rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. Here we use a combination of exact diagonalization and conformal field theory to determine the phase diagrams of ladders with up to four chains. We discuss how phenomena familiar from ordinary SU(2) spin ladders are generalized in their anyonic counterparts, such as gapless and gapped phases, odd and even effects with the ladder width, and elementary ``magnon'' excitations. Other features are entirely due to the topological nature of the anyonic degrees of freedom. In general, two-dimensional systems of interacting localized non-Abelian anyons are anyonic generalizations of two-dimensional quantum magnets.

The fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor 5/2: numerically searching for non-abelian anyons

Michael R Peterson

We review some theoretical progress towards understanding the origin of the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor 5/2 using numerical techniques. The leading candidate thought to describe the physics is the Moore-Read Pfaffian state which supports non-abelian anyonic excitations. Interestingly, these excitations have possible applications in topologically protected quantum information processing. Specifically, we discuss how the finite-thickness of realistic quasi-two-dimensional systems stabilizes the Moore-Read Pfaffian in the fractional quantum Hall effect at 5/2 and the use of bilayer systems in the second Landau level to investigate the possible quantum phase transition between abelian and non-abelian fractional quantum Hall states.

Entanglement spectrum of non-Abelian anyons

Ying-Hai Wu

Non-Abelian anyons can emerge as fractionalized excitations in two-dimensional systems with topological order. One important example is the Moore–Read fractional quantum Hall state. Its quasihole states are zero-energy eigenstates of a parent Hamiltonian, but its quasiparticle states are not. Both of them can be modeled on an equal footing using the bipartite composite fermion method. We study the entanglement spectrum of the cases with two or four non-Abelian anyons. The counting of levels in the entanglement spectrum can be understood using the edge theory of the Moore–Read state, which reflects the topological order of the system. It is shown that the fusion results of two non-Abelian anyons is determined by their distributions in the bipartite construction.

Doping lattice non-Abelian quantum Hall states

Zhengyan Darius Shi, Carolyn Zhang, T. Senthil

We study quantum phases of a fluid of mobile charged non-Abelian anyons, which arise upon doping the lattice Moore-Read quantum Hall state at lattice filling \nu = 1/2 ν = 1 / 2 and its generalizations to the Read-Rezayi ( RR_k R R k ) sequence at \nu = k/(k+2) ν = k / ( k + 2 ) . In contrast to their Abelian counterparts, non-Abelian anyons present unique challenges due to their non-invertible fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding structures. We address these challenges using a Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau (CSGL) framework that incorporates the crucial effect of energy splitting between different anyon fusion channels at nonzero dopant density. For the Moore-Read state, we show that doping the charge e/4 e / 4 non-abelion naturally leads to a fully gapped charge- 2 2 superconductor without any coexisting topological order. The chiral central charge of the superconductor depends on details of the interactions determining the splitting of anyon fusion channels. For general RR_k R R k states, our analysis of states obtained by doping the basic non-abelion a_0 a 0 with charge e/(k+2) e / ( k + 2 ) reveals a striking even/odd pattern in the Read-Rezayi index k k . We develop a general physical picture for anyon-driven superconductivity based on charge-flux unbinding, and show how it relates to the CSGL description of doped Abelian quantum Hall states. Finally, as a bonus, we use the CSGL formalism to describe transitions between the RR_k R R k state and a trivial period- (k+2) ( k + 2 ) CDW insulator at fixed filling, driven by the gap closure of the fundamental non-Abelian anyon a_0 a 0 .
