We study quantum phases of a fluid of mobile charged non-Abelian anyons, which arise upon doping the lattice Moore-Read quantum Hall state at lattice filling \nu = 1/2 ν = 1 / 2 and its generalizations to the Read-Rezayi ( RR_k R R k ) sequence at \nu = k/(k+2) ν = k / ( k + 2 ) . In contrast to their Abelian counterparts, non-Abelian anyons present unique challenges due to their non-invertible fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding structures. We address these challenges using a Chern-Simons-Ginzburg-Landau (CSGL) framework that incorporates the crucial effect of energy splitting between different anyon fusion channels at nonzero dopant density. For the Moore-Read state, we show that doping the charge e/4 e / 4 non-abelion naturally leads to a fully gapped charge- 2 2 superconductor without any coexisting topological order. The chiral central charge of the superconductor depends on details of the interactions determining the splitting of anyon fusion channels. For general RR_k R R k states, our analysis of states obtained by doping the basic non-abelion a_0 a 0 with charge e/(k+2) e / ( k + 2 ) reveals a striking even/odd pattern in the Read-Rezayi index k k . We develop a general physical picture for anyon-driven superconductivity based on charge-flux unbinding, and show how it relates to the CSGL description of doped Abelian quantum Hall states. Finally, as a bonus, we use the CSGL formalism to describe transitions between the RR_k R R k state and a trivial period- (k+2) ( k + 2 ) CDW insulator at fixed filling, driven by the gap closure of the fundamental non-Abelian anyon a_0 a 0 . Non-Abelian anyons promise to reveal spectacular features of quantum mechanics that could ultimately provide the foundation for a decoherence-free quantum computer. A key breakthrough in the pursuit of these exotic particles originated from Read and Green's observation that the Moore-Read quantum Hall state and a (relatively simple) two-dimensional p+ip superconductor both support so-called Ising non-Abelian anyons. Here we establish a similar correspondence between the Z_3 Read-Rezayi quantum Hall state and a novel two-dimensional superconductor in which charge-2e Cooper pairs are built from fractionalized quasiparticles. In particular, both phases harbor Fibonacci anyons that---unlike Ising anyons---allow for universal topological quantum computation solely through braiding. Using a variant of Teo and Kane's construction of non-Abelian phases from weakly coupled chains, we provide a blueprint for such a superconductor using Abelian quantum Hall states interlaced with an array of superconducting islands. Fibonacci anyons appear as neutral deconfined particles that lead to a two-fold ground-state degeneracy on a torus. In contrast to a p+ip superconductor, vortices do not yield additional particle types yet depending on non-universal energetics can serve as a trap for Fibonacci anyons. These results imply that one can, in principle, combine well-understood and widely available phases of matter to realize non-Abelian anyons with universal braid statistics. Numerous future directions are discussed, including speculations on alternative realizations with fewer experimental requirements.
We study phases of itinerant anyons when hole-doping Laughlin-like states in fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). In light of the recent observation of time-reversal-broken superconductivity near FCIs in van der Waals materials, a theoretical understanding of doped fractional quantum Hall states on a lattice has been developed by Shi and Senthil [Phys. Rev. X 15, 031069], reviving old ideas about "anyon superconductivity". We test these ideas analytically within an effective parton mean-field theory and numerically with variational Monte Carlo, pointing out that the predicted state depends on whether the Laughlin order at ν=1/m is described by a U(1), or an SU(m) Chern-Simons field, the latter implying a symmetry between the m parton species. Our results demonstrate that the interplay between band Berry curvature and effective anyon dispersion has crucial implications for which anyonic phase is realized. In the experimentally relevant scenario of hole-doping the ν=1/3 fermionic FCI, our results uncover a mechanism for the formation of an anyon superconducting state of half-integer central charge in the case when the energetically cheapest excitations are the fundamental 1/3 charge anyons, bypassing the need for these anyons to pair into charge-2/3 composites, which has generally been assumed in similar anyon superconductivity constructions.
This thesis investigates interaction-driven phenomena of two-dimensional electrons in strong magnetic fields, with a focus on how the electron-electron (e-e) interaction projected in one Landau level affects the physical properties of the topological bands. The Landau-level-projected interaction favours qualitatively different ground states in different situations, such as topologically ordered fractional quantum Hall liquids that host anyonic quasiparticles, and symmetry-broken electron solids or charge-ordered phases. In the fractional quantum Hall liquid, we study quasiholes as interacting particles rather than featureless point excitations in a dilute and ideal anyon gas. Going beyond model Hamiltonians, we show that realistic e–e interactions generate nontrivial effective anyon–anyon interactions that can endow few-anyon clusters with internal structure and binding, producing “anyon molecules”. Because the same effective interaction also controls how anyons couple to local probes, we compute local density-of-states signatures and show that local tunneling spectra can encode both universal and non-universal information. The analysis is carried out for the Abelian Laughlin states and for the non-Abelian Moore–Read state, the latter one showing characteristic odd–even features tied to its fusion structure. In the high-Landau-level regime, the same interaction-driven physics favors symmetry-broken charge order. We construct a microscopic-to-continuum framework that connects Landau-level-projected Hartree--Fock energetics to elastic constants and, through Kosterlitz--Thouless--Halperin--Nelson--Young defect physics and renormalization-group flow, to a quantitative finite-temperature melting scale. This approach highlights the role of dislocation proliferation-induced thermal renormalization in quantitatively understanding the 2D electron solids' melting, and enables direct comparison with transport signatures of re-entrant insulating phases. Taken together, we provide an interaction-based perspective on both topological quantum Hall liquids and quantum Hall electron solids in Landau levels. This thesis closes by outlining several directions that follow naturally from this work.
We study zero modes bound to charge-conjugation defects in fractional quantum Hall-superconductor (FQH-SC) heterostructures built from Abelian and non-Abelian FQH states. Although the associated defects are well described by G-crossed braided tensor categories, a local operator description of their zero modes is not generally known. We generalize the bulk-to-boundary construction of localized zero mode operators to FQH-SCs with non-Abelian parent topological orders, mapping bulk Wilson operators in the folded theory to localized zero mode operators in the one-dimensional FQH-SC theory. This construction distinguishes zero mode anyons from the local zero mode operators that act on the defect Hilbert space and yields a generalized zero mode algebra. It also determines the fusion-channel dependence of tunneling: tunneling of zero mode operators probes bulk monodromy, while direct zero mode anyon transfer probes G-crossed associativity data. Applying this framework, we recover the Z2m parafermion zero mode structure of fermionic Laughlin FQH-SCs at filling ν=1/m, obtain a Z2(n)×ZN structure for generalized Moore-Read states at filling ν=1/m, with N=2m for fermionic states and N=m for bosonic states, and find a Fib×ZN structure for the k=3 Read-Rezayi state at filling ν=3/(3M+2), with N=2(3M+2) for fermionic states and N=(3M+2)/2 for bosonic states. In the Read-Rezayi case, zero mode operator tunneling and direct zero mode anyon transfer yield distinct universal amplitude ratios between the neutral fusion channels, providing a characteristic signature of the underlying Fibonacci defect structure.
Non-Abelian anyons exist in certain spin models and may exist in quantum Hall systems at certain filling fractions. In this work, we studied the ground state of dynamical SU(2) level-kappa Chern-Simons non-Abelian anyons at finite density and no external magnetic field. We find that, in the large-kappa limit, the topological interaction induces a pairing instability and the ground state is a superconductor with d+id gap symmetry. We also develop a picture of pairing for the special value kappa=2 and argue that the ground state is a superfluid of pairs for all values of kappa.
We present a unified category-theoretic framework for quantum Hall hierarchy constructions and anyon superconductivity based on modular tensor categories over Rep(U(1)) and sRep(U(1)f). Our approach explicitly incorporates conserved U(1) charge and formulates doping via a generalized stack-and-condense procedure, in which an auxiliary topological order is stacked onto the parent phase, and the quasiparticles created by doping subsequently condense. Depending on whether this condensation preserves or breaks the U(1) symmetry, the system undergoes a transition to a quantum Hall hierarchy state or to an anyon superconductor. For anyon superconductors, the condensate charge is determined unambiguously by the charged local bosons contained in the condensable algebra. Our framework reproduces all known anyon superconductors obtained from field-theoretic analyses and further predicts novel phases, including a charge-2e anyon superconductor derived from the Laughlin state and charge-ke anyon superconductors arising from bosonic Zk Read-Rezayi states. By placing hierarchy transitions and anyon superconductivity within a single mathematical formalism, our work provides a unified understanding of competing and proximate phases near experimentally realizable fractional quantum Hall states.
