TheD(D3)-anyon chain: integrable boundary conditions and excitation spectra

Abstract

Chains of interacting non-Abelian anyons with local interactions invariant under the action of the Drinfeld double of the dihedral group D 3 are constructed. Formulated as a spin chain the Hamiltonians are generated from commuting transfer matrices of an integrable vertex model for periodic and braided as well as open boundaries. A different anyonic model with the same local Hamiltonian is obtained within the fusion path formulation. This model is shown to be related to an integrable fusion interaction round the face model. Bulk and surface properties of the anyon chain are computed from the Bethe equations for the spin chain. The low-energy effective theories and operator content of the models (in both the spin chain and fusion path formulation) are identified from analytical and numerical studies of the finite-size spectra. For all boundary conditions considered the continuum theory is found to be a product of two conformal field theories. Depending on the coupling constants the factors can be a Z 4 parafermion or a minimal model.

Collective states of interactingD(D3) non-Abelian anyons

Peter E. Finch, Holger Frahm

We study the finite size spectra of integrable quantum chains of interacting non-Abelian anyons constructed using the Drinfeld double of the dihedral group D 3 . The gapless low energy modes are identified as the direct product of two conformal field theories which can be decomposed according to the residual symmetries of the chains subject to periodic boundary conditions.

Exact solution of the D3 non-Abelian anyon chain

Natalia Braylovskaya, Peter E. Finch, Holger Frahm

Commuting transfer matrices for linear chains of interacting non-Abelian anyons from the two-dimensional irreducible representation of the dihedral group ${D}_{3}$ [or, equivalently, the integer sector of the $su{(2)}_{4}$ spin-1 chain] are constructed using the spin-anyon correspondence to a ${D}_{3}$-symmetric formulation of the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain. The spectral problem is solved using discrete inversion identities satisfied by these transfer matrices and functional Bethe ansatz methods. The resulting spectrum can be related to that of the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with boundary conditions depending on the topological sector of the anyon chain. The properties of this model in the critical regime are studied by finite size analysis of the spectrum. In particular, points in the phase diagram where the anyon chain realizes some of the rational ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ orbifold theories are identified.

Z n clock models and chains of so ( n ) 2 non-Abelian anyons: symmetries, integrable points and low energy properties

Peter E. Finch, Michael Flohr, Holger Frahm

Abstract We study two families of quantum models which have been used previously to investigate the effect of topological symmetries in one-dimensional correlated matter. Various striking similarities are observed between certain Z n quantum clock models, spin chains generalizing the Ising model, and chains of non-Abelian anyons constructed from the so ( n ) 2 fusion category for odd n , both subject to periodic boundary conditions. In spite of the differences between these two types of quantum chains, e.g. their Hilbert spaces being spanned by tensor products of local spin states or fusion paths of anyons, the symmetries of the lattice models are shown to be closely related. Furthermore, under a suitable mapping between the parameters describing the interaction between spins and anyons the respective Hamiltonians share part of their energy spectrum (although their degeneracies may differ). This spin-anyon correspondence can be extended by fine-tuning of the coupling constants leading to exactly solvable models. We show that the algebraic structures underlying the integrability of the clock models and the anyon chain are the same. For n = 3,5,7 we perform an extensive finite size study—both numerical and based on the exact solution—of these models to map out their ground state phase diagram and to identify the effective field theories describing their low energy behaviour. We observe that the continuum limit at the integrable points can be described by rational conformal field theories with extended symmetry algebras which can be related to the discrete ones of the lattice models.

Integrable anyon chains: From fusion rules to face models to effective field theories

Peter E. Finch, Michael Flohr, Holger Frahm

Starting from the fusion rules for the algebra SO(5)2 we construct one-dimensional lattice models of interacting anyons with commuting transfer matrices of ‘interactions round the face’ (IRF) type. The conserved topological charges of the anyon chain are recovered from the transfer matrices in the limit of large spectral parameter. The properties of the models in the thermodynamic limit and the low energy excitations are studied using Bethe ansatz methods. Two of the anyon models are critical at zero temperature. From the analysis of the finite size spectrum we find that they are effectively described by rational conformal field theories invariant under extensions of the Virasoro algebra, namely WB2 and WD5, respectively. The latter contains primaries with half and quarter spin. The modular partition function and fusion rules are derived and found to be consistent with the results for the lattice model.

The Drinfeld Double of Dihedral Groups and Integrable Systems

Peter E. Finch

A little over 20 years ago Drinfeld presented the quantum (or Drinfeld) double construction. This construction takes any Hopf algebra and embeds it in a larger quasi-triangular Hopf algebra, which contains an algebraic solution to the constant Yang–Baxter equation. One such class of algebras consists of the Drinfeld doubles of finite groups, which are currently of interest due to their connections with non-Abelian anyons. The smallest non-commutative Drinfeld double of a finite group algebra is the Drinfeld double of D3 , the dihedral group of order six, which was recently used to construct solutions to the Yang–Baxter equation cor- responding to 2-state and 3-state integrable spin chains with periodic boundary conditions. In this thesis we construct R-matrices from the Drinfeld double of dihedral group algebras, D(Dn) and consider their associated integrable systems. The 3-state spin chain from D(D3) is generalised to include open boundaries and it is also shown that there exists a more general R-matrix for this algebra. For general D(Dn) an R-matrix is constructed as a descendant of the zero-field six-vertex model.

Spectra of Transfer Matrices of Exactly Solvable Models with D(D3)Symmetry

Christopher S. Campbell

The Quantum Inverse Scattering Method, formalised in the late 70s by Faddeev, Sklyanin and Takhtadzhyan, is a method for constructing integrable quantum systems given a solution to the Yang-Baxter equation. Once constructed it is often possible to find the energy spectrum of the associated hamiltonian using the method of mutually commuting transfer matrices, and the algebraic Bethe ansatz. If the algebraic Bethe ansatz fails we are still often able to solve the system using functional relation methods. In 2006 Dancer, Isaac and Links found several solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation arising from the Drinfeld double of the dihedral group $D(D_3)$. The associated hamiltonian describes a system of interacting, non-abelian anyons. In this dissertation we take these solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation and, using a combination of algebraic Bethe ansatz and functional relations, we find the eigenvalues of the anyonic hamiltonian. The solution we find is dependent on two distinct sets of solutions to the Bethe equations, something that is rather uncommon, though not unprecedented. Further results are also obtained for other integrable models arising from the same set of solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation.
