Abstract

We show that a nonlinear asymmetric directional coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating by nondegenerate parametric amplification is an effective source of single-mode squeezed light. This is demonstrated, under certain conditions and for specific modes, for incident coherent beams in terms of the quasiprobability functions, photon-number distribution and phase distribution.

Photon statistics of a contradirectional nonlinear coupler

Jan Peřina, J Perina

We examine a contradirectional asymmetric nonlinear coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating by second harmonic generation. For this we develop a new consistent approach to quantum contradirectional propagation. Using a short-length approximation or a strong stimulating field in the second harmonic mode, we can demonstrate an effective transfer of non-classical properties of light from nonlinear to linear waveguides analysing quadrature and integrated intensity fluctuations, photon number distribution, reduced factorial moments and uncertainty product. Effects of non-classical behaviour of incident beams and of external noise are involved.

Nonclassical effects in nondegenerate optical parametric symmetric coupler

Mohamed S. Abdalla, Faisal A. A. El-Orany, Jan Peřina

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism nonclassical effects of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler containing nondegenerate parametric amplification have been studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the out going fields from the coupler. Particular attention has been paid to two mode squeezing, second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator for coherent state. Furthermore, regimes for generation and transmission of squeezed and/or sub-Poissonian light are found.

Quantum statistics of a nonlinear asymmetric coupler with strong pumping

We derive the quantum statistical properties of light beams involved in an asymmetric nonlinear coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating using second harmonic generation. Examining quadrature and integrated intensity fluctuations, photon number distribution, reduced factorial moments and the uncertainty product, we demonstrate non-classical behaviour of single and compound modes. We show that squeezing of vacuum fluctuations, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and oscillations in photon number distribution created by nonlinear dynamics can be transferred to the linear signal mode. Also effects of non-classical incident beams and smoothing effects of external noise are demonstrated.

Quantum statistical properties of nondegenerate optical parametric symmetric coupler

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism the quantum statistical properties of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler operating by nondegenerate parametric amplification are studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the outgoing fields from the coupler. Particular attention is paid to two-mode squeezing, the second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state |1 and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator of a coherent state. Furthermore, regimes for the generation and transmission of squeezed and/or sub-Poissonian light are found.
