Abstract

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism the quantum statistical properties of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler operating by nondegenerate parametric amplification are studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the outgoing fields from the coupler. Particular attention is paid to two-mode squeezing, the second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state |1 and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator of a coherent state. Furthermore, regimes for the generation and transmission of squeezed and/or sub-Poissonian light are found.

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism nonclassical effects of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler containing nondegenerate parametric amplification have been studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the out going fields from the coupler. Particular attention has been paid to two mode squeezing, second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator for coherent state. Quantum statistics and dynamics of nonlinear couplers with nonlinear exchange

M. Sebawe Abdalla, Faisal A. A. El-Orany, Jan Pe[rcirc]ina

In this paper we derive the quantum statistical and dynamical properties of nonlinear optical couplers composed of two nonlinear waveguides operating by second subharmonic generation, which are coupled linearly through evanescent waves and nonlinearly through non-degenerate optical parametric interaction. Main attention is paid to generation and transmission of non-classical light, based on a discussion of the squeezing phenomenon, the normalized second-order correlation function and quasiprobability distribution functions. Initially coherent, number and thermal states of optical beams are considered. In particular, results are discussed with dependence on the strength of the nonlinear coupling relatively to the linear coupling. We show that if the Fock state |1〉 enters the first waveguide and the vacuume state |0〉 enters the second waveguide, the coupler can serve as a generator of squeezed vacuum state governed by the coupler parameters. Further, if thermal fields enter initially the waveguides the coupler plays a similar role as a microwave Josephson-junction parametric amplifier to generate squeezed thermal light.

Quantum statistics of a nonlinear asymmetric coupler with strong pumping

Jan Peřina, Jan Peřina

We derive the quantum statistical properties of light beams involved in an asymmetric nonlinear coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating using second harmonic generation. Examining quadrature and integrated intensity fluctuations, photon number distribution, reduced factorial moments and the uncertainty product, we demonstrate non-classical behaviour of single and compound modes. We show that squeezing of vacuum fluctuations, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and oscillations in photon number distribution created by nonlinear dynamics can be transferred to the linear signal mode. Also effects of non-classical incident beams and smoothing effects of external noise are demonstrated.

Nonclassical light in nonlinear optical couplers

Jan Peřina

Statistical properties of light generated in nonlinear optical couplers are discussed. Methods suitable for the description of non-classical properties of light are mentioned; special attention is paid to generalized superposition of coherent fields and noise. Regimes suitable for non-classical light generation in various types of nonlinear couplers based on second-harmonic and second- subharmonic generation, optical parametric processes, Kerr effect as well as Raman and Brillouin processes are analyzed. Special attention is devoted to the generation of light with sub-Poissonian statistics, squeezed light, and light in purely quantum states. Role of real effects like damping of optical fields and phase mismatches is also discussed.

Statistical properties of squeezed Kerr states

Christopher C. Gerry, R. Grobe

We study the statistical properties of squeezed Kerr states generated by squeezing, with a two-photon parametric process, the output of a Kerr medium whose input is coherent light. The squeezing has the effect of allowing the photon statistics to depend on the Kerr nonlinearity. Without the squeezing the statistics are Poissonian, but after squeezing they may be either sub-Poissonian or super-Poissonian. We also study the Q-function quasiprobability distribution for these states and related distributions associated with the quantum-mechanical phase. Finally, we show that quadrature squeezing can be enhanced and that squeezing and sub-Poissonian statistics can coexist.

Phase properties of the superposition of squeezed and displaced number states

Faisal A A El-Orany, Jan Peřina, M Sebawe Abdalla

We show that a nonlinear asymmetric directional coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating by nondegenerate parametric amplification is an effective source of single-mode squeezed light. This is has been demonstrated, under certain conditions and for specific modes, for incident coherent beams in terms of the quasiprobability functions, photon-number distribution and phase distribution.
