Abstract

We show that a nonlinear asymmetric directional coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating by nondegenerate parametric amplification is an effective source of single-mode squeezed light. This is has been demonstrated, under certain conditions and for specific modes, for incident coherent beams in terms of the quasiprobability functions, photon-number distribution and phase distribution.

Quantum statistical properties of nondegenerate optical parametric symmetric coupler

M. Sebawe Abdalla, Faisal A. A. El-Orany, Jan Peřina

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism the quantum statistical properties of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler operating by nondegenerate parametric amplification are studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the outgoing fields from the coupler. Particular attention is paid to two-mode squeezing, the second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state |1 and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator of a coherent state. Furthermore, regimes for the generation and transmission of squeezed and/or sub-Poissonian light are found.

Quantum statistics of a nonlinear asymmetric coupler with strong pumping

Jan Peřina, Jan Peřina

We derive the quantum statistical properties of light beams involved in an asymmetric nonlinear coupler composed of a linear waveguide and a nonlinear waveguide operating using second harmonic generation. Examining quadrature and integrated intensity fluctuations, photon number distribution, reduced factorial moments and the uncertainty product, we demonstrate non-classical behaviour of single and compound modes. We show that squeezing of vacuum fluctuations, sub-Poissonian photon statistics and oscillations in photon number distribution created by nonlinear dynamics can be transferred to the linear signal mode. Also effects of non-classical incident beams and smoothing effects of external noise are demonstrated.

Nonclassical effects in nondegenerate optical parametric symmetric coupler

In the framework of Hamiltonian formalism nonclassical effects of an optical field propagating inside a directional coupler containing nondegenerate parametric amplification have been studied. We investigate the effect of switching between the input modes and the out going fields from the coupler. Particular attention has been paid to two mode squeezing, second-order correlation function, quasiprobability distribution functions, and photon-number distribution. Incident number and coherent states are considered. It has been shown that when one of the modes enters the coupler in the Fock state and the other modes are in vacuum states, the coupler can serve as a generator for coherent state. Non-classical Light in Nonlinear Symmetric and Asymmetric Couplers

Jan Peřina, J. Bajer

We derive the quantum-statistical properties of light beams in nonlinear symmetric and asymmetric couplers composed of linear waveguides and a nonlinear waveguide operating by the second-harmonic generation. This device can exhibit non-classical behaviour in single and compound modes and produce squeezed and/or sub-Poissonian light. Power solutions are obtained up to the twelfth order adopting a symbolic computer method. In addition, new higher-order results for the asymmetric coupler are presented.
