Abstract

We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=ℏ/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.

Theory of the field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid

Jacob S. Gordon, Andrei Catuneanu, Erik Schwartz Sørensen +1 more

Abstract Elementary excitations in entangled states such as quantum spin liquids may exhibit exotic statistics different from those obeyed by fundamental bosons and fermions. Non-Abelian anyons exist in a Kitaev spin liquid—the ground state of an exactly solvable model. A smoking-gun signature of these excitations, namely a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity, was recently reported in α-RuCl3. While fascinating, a microscopic theory for this phenomenon remains elusive because the pure Kitaev model cannot display this effect in an intermediate magnetic field. Here we present a microscopic theory of the Kitaev spin liquid emerging between the low- and high-field states. Essential to this result is an antiferromagnetic off-diagonal symmetric interaction which allows the Kitaev spin liquid to protrude from the ferromagnetic Kitaev limit under a magnetic field. This generic model displays a strong field anisotropy, and we predict a wide spin liquid regime when the field is perpendicular to the honeycomb plane.

Exact Chiral Spin Liquid with Non-Abelian Anyons

Hong Yao, Steven Allan Kivelson

We establish the existence of a chiral spin liquid (CSL) as the exact ground state of the Kitaev model on a decorated honeycomb lattice, which is obtained by replacing each site in the familiar honeycomb lattice with a triangle. This CSL state spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry but preserves other symmetries. There are two topologically distinct CSL's separated by a quantum critical point. Interestingly, vortex excitations in the topologically nontrivial (Chern number +/-1) CSL obey non-Abelian statistics.

Pristine Mott insulator from an exactly solvable spin- 12 Kitaev model

Jian-Jian Miao, Hui-Ke Jin, Fa Wang +2 more

We propose an exactly solvable quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ model with time reversal invariance on a two-dimensional brick-wall lattice, where each unit cell consists of three sites. We find that the ground states are algebraic quantum spin liquid states. The spinon excitations are gapless and the energy dispersion is linear around two Dirac points. The ground states are of threefold topological degeneracy on a torus. Breaking the time reversal symmetry opens a bulk energy gap and the ${Z}_{2}$ vortices obey non-Abelian statistics.

Exact Deconfined Gauge Structures in the Higher-Spin Yao-Lee Model: A Quantum Spin-Orbital Liquid with Spin Fractionalization and Non-Abelian Anyons

Zhengzhi Wu, J. X. Zhang, Hong Yao

The nonintegrable higher spin Kitaev honeycomb model has an exact Z_{2} gauge structure, which exclusively identifies quantum spin liquid in the half-integer spin Kitaev model. But its constraints for the integer-spin Kitaev model are much limited, and even trivially gapped insulators cannot be excluded. The physical implications of exact Z_{2} gauge structure, especially Z_{2} fluxes, in integer-spin models remain largely unexplored. In this Letter, we theoretically show that a spin-S Yao-Lee model [a spin-orbital model with SU(2) spin-rotation symmetry] possesses a topologically nontrivial quantum spin-orbital liquid ground state for any spin (both integer and half-integer spin) by constructing exact deconfined fermionic Z_{2} gauge charges. We further show that the conserved Z_{2} flux can also demonstrate the intriguing spin fractionalization phenomena in the non-Abelian topological order phase of the spin-1 Yao-Lee model. Its deconfined Z_{2} vortex excitation carries fractionalized spin-1/2 quantum number in the low-energy subspace, which is also a non-Abelian anyon. Our exact manifestation of spin fractionalization in an integer-spin model is rather rare in previous studies, and is absent in the Kitaev honeycomb model.

Exact results for the star lattice chiral spin liquid

Graham Kells, Dhagash B. Mehta, Johannes K. Slingerland +1 more

We examine the star lattice Kitaev model whose ground state is a chiral spin liquid. We fermionize the model such that the fermionic vacua are toric-code states on an effective Kagome lattice. This implies that the Abelian phase of the system is inherited from the fermionic vacua and that time-reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken at the level of the vacuum. In terms of these fermions we derive the Bloch-matrix Hamiltonians for the vortex-free sector and its time-reversed counterpart and illuminate the relationships between the sectors. The phase diagram for the model is shown to be a sphere in the space of coupling parameters around the triangles of the lattices. The Abelian phase lies inside the sphere and the critical boundary between topologically distinct Abelian and non-Abelian phases lies on the surface. Outside the sphere the system is generically gapped except in the planes where the coupling parameters between the vertices on triangles are zero. These cases correspond to bipartite lattice structures and the dispersion relations are similar to that of the original Kitaev honeycomb model. In a further analysis we demonstrate the threefold non-Abelian ground-state degeneracy on a torus by explicit calculation.
