We establish the existence of a chiral spin liquid (CSL) as the exact ground state of the Kitaev model on a decorated honeycomb lattice, which is obtained by replacing each site in the familiar honeycomb lattice with a triangle. This CSL state spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry but preserves other symmetries. There are two topologically distinct CSL's separated by a quantum critical point. Interestingly, vortex excitations in the topologically nontrivial (Chern number +/-1) CSL obey non-Abelian statistics.
We present a solution of Kitaev's spin model on the honeycomb lattice and of related topologically ordered spin models. We employ a Jordan-Wigner-type fermionization and find that the Hamiltonian takes a BCS-type form, allowing the system to be solved by Bogoliubov transformation. Our fermionization does not employ nonphysical auxiliary degrees of freedom and the eigenstates we obtain are completely explicit in terms of the spin variables. The ground state is obtained as a BCS condensate of fermion pairs over a vacuum state which corresponds to the toric-code state with the same vorticity. We show in detail how to calculate all eigenstates and eigenvalues of the model on the torus. In particular, we find that the topological degeneracy on the torus descends directly from that of the toric-code, which now supplies four vacua for the fermions, one for each choice of periodic vs antiperiodic boundary conditions. The reduction of the degeneracy in the non-Abelian phase of the model is seen to be due to the vanishing of one of the corresponding candidate BCS ground states in that phase. This occurs in particular in the fully periodic vortex-free sector. The true ground state in this sector is exhibited and shown to be gapped away from the three partially antiperiodic ground states whenever the non-Abelian phase is gapped.
We analyze the Kitaev model on the triangle-honeycomb lattice whose ground state has recently been shown to be a chiral spin liquid. We consider two perturbative expansions: the isolated-dimer limit containing Abelian anyons and the isolated-triangle limit. In the former case, we derive the low-energy effective theory and discuss the role played by multiplaquette interactions. In this phase, we also compute the spin-spin correlation functions for any vortex configuration. In the isolated-triangle limit, we show that the effective theory is, at lowest nontrivial order, the Kitaev honeycomb model at the isotropic point. We also compute the next-order correction which opens a gap and yields non-Abelian anyons.
The star lattice hosts the Yao-Kivelson chiral spin liquid, an exactly solvable Kitaev spin liquid that breaks time reversal spontaneously and is non-Abelian or Abelian depending on the ratio of its two couplings. A density-matrix renormalization group study found that an added Heisenberg exchange leaves it a wide stability window for ferromagnetic but only a narrow one for antiferromagnetic Kitaev coupling. Using projective symmetry groups (PSGs) of fermionic partons, we show that the chirality is not a peculiarity of the solvable point: whenever the
π spin rotations act on the partons as in the exact solution (spin-gauge locking), a time-reversal-symmetric mean-field state has no amplitude on the triangles, at any range, so a Kitaev-type spin liquid on this lattice must break time reversal. The Abelian and non-Abelian liquids of both signs share a single chiral PSG, within which their transition is a band inversion. The Klein duality, which reverses the Heisenberg coupling, permutes the PSGs and leaves exactly the locked ones unchanged; a
Z2 spin-liquid phase mapped onto itself is therefore locked and, if it spans a connected range of couplings, contains a Kitaev point. Unprojected mean-field theory in Kitaev's Majorana representation treats both signs alike. Exact second-order perturbation theory about the Kitaev points locates the asymmetry: the triangles respond identically for both signs, whereas on the bonds between triangles the two off-diagonal Heisenberg terms create the same four visons and interfere constructively for antiferromagnetic and almost destructively for ferromagnetic coupling, admixing a low-energy four-vison state
82 times more strongly on the antiferromagnetic side. The PSG results rest on a classification of
352 Z2 PSGs with spin-orbit-coupled amplitudes, which also identifies the fermionic partners of the known Schwinger-boson spin liquids.
We study a frustrated two-dimensional lattice spin model with Kitaev-type interaction. The lattice is obtained from the honeycomb lattice by replacing half of its sites with triangles. Using the SO(3) Majorana representation of spin, the model is exactly mapped into a
Z2 lattice gauge theory of complex fermions with standard Gauss law constraint. We show that the ground state of the model is a chiral spin liquid, and it has gapless excitations. The Chern number of the ground state is $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, implying the existence of a chiral edge mode. The vortex excitation of the model is bound with a Majorana zero mode, such mode behaves as non-Abelian anyons.
We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2)-invariant spin-1/2 model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits the spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ(xy)(s)=ℏ/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described by the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Simons theory at low energy. We further propose that a SU(2) level-2 Chern-Simons theory is the effective field theory describing the topological structure of the non-Abelian SU(2) invariant spin liquid.
