The virial expansion of a classical interacting system

Abstract

We consider N particles interacting pairwise by an inverse square potential in one dimension (Calogero–Sutherland–Moser model). For a system placed in a harmonic trap, its classical partition function for the repulsive regime is recognised in the literature. We start by presenting a concise re-derivation of this result. The equation of state is then calculated both for the trapped and the homogeneous gas. Finally, the classical limit of Wu's distribution function for fractional exclusion statistics is obtained and we re-derive the classical virial expansion of the homogeneous gas using this distribution function.

The virial expansion of a classical interacting system

We consider N particles interacting pair-wise by an inverse square potential in one dimension (Calogero-Sutherland-Moser model). When trapped harmonically, its classical canonical partition function for the repulsive regime is known in the literature. We start by presenting a concise re-derivation of this result. The equation of state is then calculated both for the trapped and the homogeneous gas. Finally, the classical limit of Wu’s distribution function for fractional exclusion statistics is obtained and we re-derive the classical virial expansion of the homogeneous gas using this distribution function. Thermodynamics of a One-Dimensional Ideal Gas with Fractional Exclusion Statistics

M. V. N. Murthy, Ravi Shankar

We show that the particles in the Calogero-Sutherland model obey fractional exclusion statistics as defined by Haldane. We construct anyon number densities and derive the energy distribution function. We show that the partition function factorizes in the form characteristic of an ideal gas. The virial expansion is exactly computable and interestingly it is only the second virial coefficient that encodes the statistics information.

Exact quantum decay of an interacting many-particle system: the Calogero–Sutherland model

Adolfo del Campo

The exact quantum decay of a one-dimensional Bose gas with inverse-square interactions is presented. The system is equivalent to a gas of particles obeying generalized exclusion statistics. We consider the expansion dynamics of a cloud initially confined in a harmonic trap that is suddenly switched off. The decay is characterized by analyzing the fidelity between the initial and the time-evolving states, also known as the survival probability. It exhibits early on a quadratic dependence on time that turns into a power-law decay, during the course of the evolution. It is shown that the particle number and the strength of interactions determine the power-law exponent in the latter regime, as recently conjectured. The nonexponential character of the decay is linked to the many-particle reconstruction of the initial state from the decaying products.

Exact Dynamical Correlation Functions of Calogero-Sutherland Model and One-Dimensional Fractional Statistics

Zou Ha

One-dimensional model of nonrelativistic particles with inverse-square interaction potential known as the Calogero-Sutherland model is shown to possess fractional statistics. Using the theory of Jack polynomials the exact dynamical density-density correlation function and the hole propagator part of one-particle Green's function at any rational interaction coupling constant are obtained and used to show clear evidences of the fractional exclusion statistics in the sense of Haldane's "generalized Pauli exclusion principle." This model is also endowed with the corresponding natural exchange statistics.

FRACTIONAL STATISTICS IN ONE DIMENSION: MODELING BY MEANS OF 1/x2 INTERACTION AND STATISTICAL MECHANICS

SERGEI B. ISAKOV

The equivalence of a quantum system of particles interacting with a two-body inverse square potential to a system of noninteracting particles obeying 1D fractional statistics (1D anyons), stated by Polychronakos for particles on a line, is studied for the cases where the interacting system is placed (i) into a harmonic potential on a line, and (ii) on a ring, with imposing periodic boundary conditions. In the first case, reducibility of the interacting system to the Calogero system is used to explore the statistical distribution for free 1D anyons. On a ring, the thermodynamic limit is discussed in terms of the thermodynamic (asymptotic) Bethe ansatz. Yang and Yang’s integral equation is treated in this case as describing the statistical mechanics of free 1D anyons. It gives a functional equation for the statistical distribution of 1D anyons consistent with the harmonic potential approach. We show that on a ring of a finite circumference, a system of two free 1D anyons is equivalent to a system of two particles interacting with an inverse sine square potential (the Sutherland system). We also discuss the relation to the statistical mechanics of free anyons in 2+1 dimensions.

Thermodynamics of rotating quantum matter in the virial expansion

Casey Berger, K. J. Morrell, Joaquín E. Drut

We characterize the high-temperature thermodynamics of rotating bosons and fermions in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) isotropic harmonic trapping potentials. We begin by calculating analytically the conventional virial coefficients ${b}_{n}$ for all $n$ in the noninteracting case, as functions of the trapping and rotational frequencies. We also report on the virial coefficients for the angular momentum and associated moment of inertia. Using the ${b}_{n}$ coefficients, we analyze the deconfined limit (in which the angular frequency matches the trapping frequency) and derive explicitly the limiting form of the partition function, showing from the thermodynamic standpoint how both the 2D and 3D cases become effectively homogeneous 2D systems. To tackle the virial coefficients in the presence of weak interactions, we implement a coarse temporal lattice approximation and obtain virial coefficients up to third order.
