FRACTIONAL STATISTICS IN ONE DIMENSION: MODELING BY MEANS OF 1/x2 INTERACTION AND STATISTICAL MECHANICS

Abstract

The equivalence of a quantum system of particles interacting with a two-body inverse square potential to a system of noninteracting particles obeying 1D fractional statistics (1D anyons), stated by Polychronakos for particles on a line, is studied for the cases where the interacting system is placed (i) into a harmonic potential on a line, and (ii) on a ring, with imposing periodic boundary conditions. In the first case, reducibility of the interacting system to the Calogero system is used to explore the statistical distribution for free 1D anyons. On a ring, the thermodynamic limit is discussed in terms of the thermodynamic (asymptotic) Bethe ansatz. Yang and Yang’s integral equation is treated in this case as describing the statistical mechanics of free 1D anyons. It gives a functional equation for the statistical distribution of 1D anyons consistent with the harmonic potential approach. We show that on a ring of a finite circumference, a system of two free 1D anyons is equivalent to a system of two particles interacting with an inverse sine square potential (the Sutherland system). We also discuss the relation to the statistical mechanics of free anyons in 2+1 dimensions.

Fractional Statistics in One-Dimension: View From An Exactly Solvable Model

One-dimensional fractional statistics is studied using the Calogero-Sutherland model (CSM) which describes a system of non-relativistic quantum particles interacting with inverse-square two-body potential on a ring. The inversesquare exchange can be regarded as a pure statistical interaction and this system can be mapped to an ideal gas obeying the fractional exclusion and exchange statistics. The details of the exact calculations of the dynamical correlation functions for this ideal system is presented in this paper. An effective low-energy one-dimensional "anyon" model is constructed; and its correlation functions are found to be in agreement with those in the CSM; and this agreement provides an evidence for the equivalence of the first-and the second-quantized construction of the 1D anyon model at least in the long wave-length limit.Furthermore, the finite-size scaling applicable to the conformally invariant systems is used to obtain the complete set of correlation exponents for the CSM.

A Note on Statistical Interactions and the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz

Denis Bernard, Yong-Shi Wu

We show that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for one-dimensional integrable many-body systems can be reinterpreted in such a way that they only code the statistical interactions, in the sense of Haldane, between particles of identical or different momenta. Thus, the thermodynamic properties of these systems can be characterized by the generalized ideal gases recently proposed by one of us. For example, the Yang-Yang $δ$-function gas is a gas with specific statistical interactions between particles of different momenta, while the Calogero-Sutherland system provides a model for an ideal gas of particles with a fractional statistics.

Statistical phases and momentum spacings for one-dimensional anyons

Martin Greiter

Anyons and fractional statistics are by now well established in two-dimensional systems. In one dimension, fractional statistics has been established so far only through Haldane's fractional exclusion principle, but not via a fractional phase the wave function acquires as particles are interchanged. At first sight, the topology of the configuration space appears to preclude such phases in one dimension. Here we argue that the crossings of one-dimensional anyons are always unidirectional, which makes it possible to assign phases consistently and hence to introduce a statistical angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$. The fractional statistics then manifests itself in fractional spacings of the single-particle momenta of the anyons when periodic boundary conditions are imposed. These spacings are given by $\ensuremath{\Delta}p=2\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\hbar}/L(|\ensuremath{\theta}|/\ensuremath{\pi}+\text{non-negative}\text{ }\text{integer})$ for a system of length $L$. This condition is the analog of the quantization of relative angular momenta according to ${l}_{\text{z}}=\ensuremath{\hbar}(\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}/\ensuremath{\pi}+2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{integer})$ for two-dimensional anyons.

Particles possessing fractional statistics in two dimension have been dubbed anyons. We want to show how it is possible to extend this concept in the case of conformally invariant systems in one dimension, and reproduce the flux-tube attachment construction due to Wilczek. We will introduce a class of models describing 1D anyons, which has the great advantage over its 2D counterparts to be exactly solvable. The properties of these 1D anyons generalize those of a Luttinger liquid and yield a complete classification of 1D fixed points when time-reversal symmetry is broken. I HOW ANYONS MAY ARISE IN ONE DIMENSION Fractional statistics arises in two dimensions because the exchange of particle is encoded by the braid group BN rather than by the permutation group S N. This fractional exchange statistics is often thought to be possible only in two dimensions in contrast with for instance fractional exclusion statistics which is defined independently of the dimensionality. However already in their seminal paper Leinaas and hfyrheim investigated the possibility to define intermediate statistics in one dimension by considering generalized boundary conditions for wavefunctions

ONE-DIMENSIONAL STATISTICAL MECHANICS FOR IDENTICAL PARTICLES: THE CALOGERO AND ANYON CASES

Alain Dasnières de Veigy, Stéphane Ouvry

The thermodynamic of particles with intermediate statistics interpolating between Bose and Fermi statistics is addressed in the simple case where there is one quantum number per particle. Such systems are essentially one-dimensional. As an illustration, one considers the anyon model restricted to the lowest Landau level of a strong magnetic field at low temperature, the generalization of this model to several particles species, and the one-dimensional Calogero model. One reviews a unified algorithm to compute the statistical mechanics of these systems. It is pointed out that Haldane's generalization of the Pauli principle can be deduced from the anyon model in a strong magnetic field at low temperature.
