Abstract

We characterize the high-temperature thermodynamics of rotating bosons and fermions in two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) isotropic harmonic trapping potentials. We begin by calculating analytically the conventional virial coefficients ${b}_{n}$ for all $n$ in the noninteracting case, as functions of the trapping and rotational frequencies. We also report on the virial coefficients for the angular momentum and associated moment of inertia. Using the ${b}_{n}$ coefficients, we analyze the deconfined limit (in which the angular frequency matches the trapping frequency) and derive explicitly the limiting form of the partition function, showing from the thermodynamic standpoint how both the 2D and 3D cases become effectively homogeneous 2D systems. To tackle the virial coefficients in the presence of weak interactions, we implement a coarse temporal lattice approximation and obtain virial coefficients up to third order.

Virial expansion coefficients in the harmonic approximation

J. R. Armstrong, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner, D. V. Fedorov +1 more

The virial expansion method is applied within a harmonic approximation to an interacting N-body system of identical fermions. We compute the canonical partition functions for two and three particles to get the two lowest orders in the expansion. The energy spectrum is carefully interpolated to reproduce ground-state properties at low temperature and the noninteracting high-temperature limit of constant virial coefficients. This resembles the smearing of shell effects in finite systems with increasing temperature. Numerical results are discussed for the second and third virial coefficients as functions of dimension, temperature, interaction, and transition temperature between low- and high-energy limits.

Virial coefficients of trapped and untrapped three-component fermions with three-body forces in arbitrary spatial dimensions

A. J. Czejdo, Joaquín E. Drut, Y. Hou +2 more

Using a coarse temporal lattice approximation, we calculate the first few terms of the virial expansion of a three-species fermion system with a three-body contact interaction in $d$ spatial dimensions, both in homogeneous space and in a harmonic trapping potential of frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$. Using the three-body problem to renormalize, we report analytic results for the change in the fourth- and fifth-order virial coefficients $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{4}$ and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{5}$ as functions of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{3}$. Additionally, we argue that in the $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ limit the relationship ${b}_{n}^{\text{T}}={n}^{\ensuremath{-}d/2}{b}_{n}$ holds between the trapped (T) and the homogeneous coefficients for arbitrary temperature and coupling strength (not merely in scale-invariant regimes). Finally, we point out an exact, universal (coupling- and frequency-independent) relationship between $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{3}^{\text{T}}$ in one dimension with three-body forces and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{2}^{\text{T}}$ in two dimensions with two-body forces.

Fourth- and fifth-order virial expansion of harmonically trapped fermions at unitarity

Y. Hou, K. J. Morrell, A. J. Czejdo +1 more

By generalizing our automated algebra approach from homogeneous space to harmonically trapped systems, we have calculated the fourth- and fifth-order virial coefficients of universal spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ fermions in the unitary limit, confined in an isotropic harmonic potential. We present results for said coefficients as a function of trapping frequency (or, equivalently, temperature), which compare favorably with previous Monte Carlo calculations (available only at fourth order) as well as with our previous estimates in the untrapped limit (high temperature, low frequency). In addition to the conventional coefficients, we provide estimates for the contributions from subspaces with varying polarization. We use our results for the virial coefficients, together with resummation techniques, to calculate the compressibility and spin susceptibility.

Third- and fourth-order virial coefficients of harmonically trapped fermions in a semiclassical approximation

K. J. Morrell, Casey Berger, Joaquín E. Drut

Using a leading-order semiclassical approximation, we calculate the third- and fourth-order virial coefficients of nonrelativistic spin-1/2 fermions in a harmonic trapping potential in arbitrary spatial dimensions, and as functions of temperature, trapping frequency, and coupling strength. Our simple, analytic results for the interaction-induced changes $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{3}$ and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{b}_{4}$ agree qualitatively, and in some regimes quantitatively, with previous numerical calculations for the unitary limit of three-dimensional Fermi gases.

Virial coefficients for trapped Bose and Fermi gases beyond the unitary limit: An S -matrix approach

Edgar Marcelino de Carvalho Neto, André Nicolai, I. Roditi +1 more

We study the virial expansion for three-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperature using an approximation that only considers two-body processes and is valid for high temperatures and low densities. The first virial coefficients are computed and the second is exact. The results are obtained for the full range of values of the scattering length, and the unitary limit is recovered as a particular case. A weak coupling expansion is performed and the free case is also obtained as a proper limit. The influence of an anisotropic harmonic trap is considered using the local density approximation (LDA), analytical results are obtained, and the special case of the isotropic trap is discussed in detail.

High-temperature thermodynamics of spin-polarized Fermi gases in two-dimensional harmonic traps

Caixia Zhang, Shi-Guo Peng, Kaijun Jiang

Using a second-order quantum virial expansion, we theoretically study the high-temperature thermodynamics of spin-polarized Fermi gases with $p$-wave interaction confined in two-dimensional harmonic traps. The second virial coefficient is calculated based on the energy spectrum of two harmonically trapped fermions. We find that the two-body spectrum can correctly be evaluated only when the $p$-wave effective range is properly considered, which is referred to as the well-known Wigner's bound. According to the quantum virial expansion, the high-temperature thermodynamics of the system is then discussed based on the two-body solutions. In addition, we investigate the high-temperature behavior of $p$-wave contacts in harmonic traps within the quantum virial expansion, which characterize a set of universal relations of strongly interacting spin-polarized Fermi gases. Our results can provide an accurate benchmark at high temperature for future numerical simulations as well as high-precision thermodynamic measurements of harmonically trapped spin-polarized Fermi gases in two dimensions.
