Abstract

Entanglement is an essential resource in current experimental implementations for quantum information processing. We review a class of experiments exploiting photonic entanglement, ranging from one-way quantum computing over quantum communication complexity to long-distance quantum communication. We then propose a set of feasible experiments, that will exploit the advantages of photonic entanglement for quantum information processing.

Quantum Information Processing with Photons

Yu-Ao Chen, Cheng-Zhi Peng, Jian-Wei Pan

In this talk I shall present a brief overview on some recent exciting experimental progress towards scalable quantum information processing (QIP), e.g., quantum communication, quantum computation and quantum simulation, via manipulation of photonic qubits. Building on our long experience in research on multi-photon entanglement, we are working on a number of experiments in the field of QIP with particular emphasis on linear optical quantum computation and free space quantum communication. It is foreseen that with ongoing development, quantum communication over 1000 km scale and coherent quantum manipulation of up to a few tens photonic qubits shall be feasible in the next five years.

Photonic quantum information processing: a review

Fulvio Flamini, Nicolò Spagnolo, Fabio Sciarrino

Photonic quantum technologies represent a promising platform for several applications, ranging from long-distance communications to the simulation of complex phenomena. Indeed, the advantages offered by single photons do make them the candidate of choice for carrying quantum information in a broad variety of areas with a versatile approach. Furthermore, recent technological advances are now enabling first concrete applications of photonic quantum information processing. The goal of this manuscript is to provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the state of the art in this active field, with a due balance between theoretical, experimental and technological results. When more convenient, we will present significant achievements in tables or in schematic figures, in order to convey a global perspective of the several horizons that fall under the name of photonic quantum information.

Quantum Computation and Quantum Communication with Entangled Photons

Anton Zeilinger

Entanglement is a fundamental resource both in long-distance quantum communication and in quantum computation. Because of its obvious indispensability in quantum teleportation, entanglement is crucial for quantum repeaters. Recently [1], we were able to synchronize two completely independent sources of entangled photons such that entanglement swapping became possible with independent lasers with high fidelity. In a future experiment, such lasers can be separated by kilometer distances.

Entanglement Distribution in Quantum Communication Networks: A Comprehensive Review

Mr. M. Subbareddy G. Silpalatha

Entanglement distribution is a fundamental building block of quantum communication networks, enabling the secure and reliable exchange of quantum information over long distances. Unlike classical communication, quantum networks exploit the unique properties of quantum entanglement to support applications such as quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation, distributed quantum computing, and networked quantum sensing. Although significant progress has been made in recent years, the efficient generation, transmission, and preservation of entangled states remain major research challenges due to photon loss, decoherence, and limitations in current communication infrastructure. This review provides a comprehensive overview of entanglement distribution in quantum communication networks, focusing on the technologies that enable practical implementation and the latest experimental developments. It discusses key approaches for generating and distributing entangled photons through optical fibers, free-space links, and satellite-based communication, together with supporting technologies such as quantum repeaters, quantum memories, and photonic devices. The review also examines recent experimental demonstrations that have advanced long-distance quantum communication while highlighting the technical barriers that must be overcome for large-scale deployment. Finally, emerging applications and future research directions are presented, including the development of scalable quantum networks, the quantum internet, and secure global communication systems. This review aims to provide researchers and students with a clear understanding of the current state of entanglement distribution and its growing role in next-generation quantum communication technologies.

We will present guided-wave photonic solutions enabling the production and manipulation of entangled photons at telecommunication wavelengths [1-3]. We will also discuss how entanglement-induced correlations are subsequently exploited as key resources for implementing fundamental quantum optical experiments [4, 5], establishing long-distance quantum cryptography links [6], and for characterizing optical materials with unprecedented precision [7].
