At present, the human society is stepping into the era of the interconnection of everything, every moment there are massive data needs to be transmitted and processed. With the massive growth of data information, people put forward a higher demand for the information processing ability of network, so the photon information processing technology was put forward. Photonic information processing technology refers to the technology of processing optical information directly in the optical domain. It breaks through the bottleneck of bandwidth and rate of traditional electrical information processing, and has become a solution of ultra-high speed information processing. In addition, the latest technology makes quantum information processing technology possible, which provides a promising platform for applications and research in a variety of contexts. This paper begins with photon generation and transitions from photon information processing technology to quantum information processing technology. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the field, showing a balance between theoretical and experimental technical results.
Photons are very promising resources for the whole field of quantum information processing. Bulk optics are currently not suitable for the realization of complex quantum optical schemes due to several drawbacks. The ongoing miniaturization of photonic structures due to the availability of sophisticated nanofabrication has provided huge opportunities for physical research of novel phenomena in nanophotonic systems and quantum technological applications. These include quantum information processing such as quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum metrology, and quantum sensing. Quantum communication is already quite advanced with several quantum key distribution (QKD) systems commercially available offering absolute security. Photonic quantum technologies are enabling breakthroughs in experimental tests of quantum physics and are close to practical applications of quantum technologies in imaging, secure communications, ultrasensitive metrology and quantum computing. There are several advantages to encoding a quantum bit onto a photon: the preparation and manipulation of single photons is easy, and the photonic qubit is a natural candidate for quantum imaging and communications. Furthermore, the qubit can be encoded in various degrees of freedom such as on the position, phase, time-bin, energy, angular momentum, polarization of the photon—or a combination of these. This flexibility leads to enormous opportunities for scientific exploration and in practical applications. Abstract Quantum information processing is nowadays an established branch of quantum mechanics applications. Recent results in different areas, ranging from communications to computing, show that quantum technologies are advancing towards being mature platforms with substantial advantages over traditional classical protocols. Quantum optics and photonic apparatuses are one of the best candidates for the realization of quantum processors. In this context, integrated photonic technologies are essential components towards miniaturisation of such complex optical systems. Integrated optical devices enabled an important improvement in the level of complexity in the generation and processing of quantum states of light. This review aims at providing an exhaustive framework of the advances of integrated quantum photonic platforms, for what concerns the integration of sources, manipulation, and detectors, as well as the contributions in quantum computing, cryptography and simulations.
Photonics is an effective platform for engineering quantum states of many photons that can be harnessed for applications in information processing tasks, ranging from secure communications to enhanced sensors to efficient simulation of physical or other systems. I will discuss recent developments and some challenges to achieving this promise. Building and measuring multi-photon quantum states suitable for these applications demands a means for them to interfere and for detection at the level of individual photons. Photonic integrated circuits are well suited to these tasks at a scale that is not possible by other means. Advances in the design and utilization of circuits and detectors enable quantum advantage, and indeed provide new opportunities for classical optical systems.
