Non-Markovian quantum state diffusion

Abstract

A nonlinear stochastic Schr\"odinger equation for pure states describing non-Markovian diffusion of quantum trajectories and compatible with non-Markovian master equations is presented. This provides an unraveling of the evolution of any quantum system coupled to a finite or infinite number of harmonic oscillators without any approximation. Its power is illustrated by several examples, including measurementlike situations, dissipation, and quantum Brownian motion. Some examples treat this environment phenomenologically as an infinite reservoir with fluctuations of arbitrary correlation. In other examples the environment consists of a finite number of oscillators. In such a quasiperiodic case we see the reversible decay of a macroscopic quantum-superposition (``Schr\"odinger cat''). Finally, our description of open systems is compatible with different positions of the ``Heisenberg cut'' between system and environment.

Open System Dynamics with Non-Markovian Quantum Trajectories

Walter T. Strunz, Lajos Diósi, Nicolas Gisin

A non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equation for a quantum system coupled to an environment of harmonic oscillators is presented. The ensemble average recovers the reduced density matrix without approximation and hence it allows one to determine open system dynamics with strong and non-Markovian environmental effects in a very efficient way. We demonstrate the power of our approach with several illustrative examples. First, we discuss a measurement-type situation, then a two-state system strongly coupled to a non-Markovian environment, exhibiting decays and revivals. Further examples showing the remarkable features of our new approach to non-Markovian open system dynamics are discussed, for instance, the possibility to shift the ``Heisenberg cut'' between system and environment.

Convolutionless Non-Markovian master equations and quantum trajectories: Brownian motion

Walter T. Strunz, Ting Yu

Stochastic Schr\"odinger equations for quantum trajectories offer an alternative and sometimes superior approach to the study of open quantum system dynamics. Here we show that recently established convolutionless non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equations may serve as a powerful tool for the derivation of convolutionless master equations for non-Markovian open quantum systems. The most interesting example is quantum Brownian motion (QBM) of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a heat bath of oscillators, one of the most employed exactly soluble models of open system dynamics. We show explicitly how to establish the direct connection between the exact convolutionless master equation of QBM and the corresponding convolutionless exact stochastic Schr\"odinger equation.

Non-Markovian quantum trajectories versus master equations: Finite-temperature heat bath

Ting Yu

The interrelationship between the non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equations and the corresponding non-Markovian master equations is investigated in the finite-temperature regimes. We show that the general finite-temperature non-Markovian trajectories can be used to derive the corresponding non-Markovian master equations. A simple, yet important solvable example is the well-known damped harmonic oscillator model in which a harmonic oscillator is coupled to a finite-temperature reservoir in the rotating-wave approximation. The exact convolutionless master equation for the damped harmonic oscillator is obtained by averaging the quantum trajectories, relying upon no assumption of coupling strength or time scale. The master equation derived in this way automatically preserves the positivity, Hermiticity, and unity.

Positivity-preserving non-Markovian master equation for open quantum system dynamics: Stochastic Schrödinger equation approach

Wufu Shi, Yusui Chen, Quanzhen Ding +2 more

Positivity preservation is naturally guaranteed in exact non-Markovian master equations for open quantum system dynamics. However, in many approximated non-Markovian master equations, the positivity of the reduced density matrix is not guaranteed. In this paper we provide a general class of time-local, perturbative, and positivity-preserving non-Markovian master equations generated from stochastic Schr\"odinger equations, particularly quantum-state-diffusion equations. Our method has an expanded range of applicability for accommodating a variety of non-Markovian environments. We show the positivity-preserving master equation for a three-level system coupled to a dissipative bosonic environment as a particular example to exemplify our general approach. We illustrate the numerical simulations with an analysis explaining why the previous approximated non-Markovian master equations cannot guarantee positivity. Our work provides a consistent master equation for studying the non-Markovian dynamics in ultrafast quantum processes and strong-coupling systems.

Non-Markovian Quantum Trajectories for Open Systems

Walter T. Strunz, Lajos Diósi, Nicolas Gisin

We present a theory of non-Markovian quantum trajectories that describe the dynamics of a quantum system coupled to an environment of harmonic oscillators. When averaged over the noise, they reproduce the standard reduced density matrix without any approximation, in particular without Markov approximation. The time evolution of the environment can also be determined from these non-Markovian quantum trajectories. We present a simple example to demonstrate the power of our approach. As a remarkable feature of non-Markovian quantum trajectories, we show that for strong coupling to a dissipative environment with memory, the asymptotic state can be reached in a finite time. Further examples are described in the text.

Non-Markovian open quantum dynamics in squeezed environments: Coherent-state unraveling

Wufu Shi, Quanzhen Ding, Yusui Chen

We apply the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation approach to study the non-Markovian dynamics of quantum systems coupled to a squeezed environment. We derive the non-Markovian quantum-state-diffusion equation using coherent-state unraveling and the associated zeroth-order master equation for general models in a microscopic quantum context. Focused on a dissipative optical cavity coupled with a squeezed vacuum, the numerical simulations demonstrate the time evolution of photon numbers in an optical cavity. We observe that the long-time limits of the non-Markovian dynamics are significantly different from those of the Markovian dynamics for various memory factors and squeezing factors. Additionally, non-Markovian dynamics exhibit a distinct pattern of behavior when parameters change. Our work provides a method to study the impact of multiple parameters on the non-Markovian dynamics and long-time limits in a joint manner. The method can be further extended to squeezed finite-temperature environments.
