Abstract

We apply the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation approach to study the non-Markovian dynamics of quantum systems coupled to a squeezed environment. We derive the non-Markovian quantum-state-diffusion equation using coherent-state unraveling and the associated zeroth-order master equation for general models in a microscopic quantum context. Focused on a dissipative optical cavity coupled with a squeezed vacuum, the numerical simulations demonstrate the time evolution of photon numbers in an optical cavity. We observe that the long-time limits of the non-Markovian dynamics are significantly different from those of the Markovian dynamics for various memory factors and squeezing factors. Additionally, non-Markovian dynamics exhibit a distinct pattern of behavior when parameters change. Our work provides a method to study the impact of multiple parameters on the non-Markovian dynamics and long-time limits in a joint manner. The method can be further extended to squeezed finite-temperature environments.

Parametrization and Optimization of Gaussian Non-Markovian Unravelings for Open Quantum Dynamics

Nina Megier, Walter T. Strunz, Carlos Viviescas +1 more

We derive a family of Gaussian non-Markovian stochastic Schrödinger equations for the dynamics of open quantum systems. The different unravelings correspond to different choices of squeezed coherent states, reflecting different measurement schemes on the environment. Consequently, we are able to give a single shot measurement interpretation for the stochastic states and microscopic expressions for the noise correlations of the Gaussian process. By construction, the reduced dynamics of the open system does not depend on the squeezing parameters. They determine the non-Hermitian Gaussian correlation, a wide range of which are compatible with the Markov limit. We demonstrate the versatility of our results for quantum information tasks in the non-Markovian regime. In particular, by optimizing the squeezing parameters, we can tailor unravelings for improving entanglement bounds or for environment-assisted entanglement protection.

Non-Markovian Quantum Dynamics in a Squeezed Reservoir

Valentin Link, Walter T. Strunz, Kimmo Luoma

We study non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system system interacting with a nonstationary squeezed bosonic reservoir. We derive exact and approximate descriptions for the open system dynamics. Focusing on the spin boson model, we compare exact dynamics with Redfield theory and a quantum optical master equation for both short and long time dynamics and in non-Markovian and Markov regimes. The squeezing of the bath results in asymptotic oscillations in the stationary state, which are captured faithfully by the Redfield master equation in the case of weak coupling. Furthermore, we find that the bath squeezing direction modifies the effective system-environment coupling strength and, thus, the strength of the dissipation.

Positivity-preserving non-Markovian master equation for open quantum system dynamics: Stochastic Schrödinger equation approach

Wufu Shi, Yusui Chen, Quanzhen Ding +2 more

Positivity preservation is naturally guaranteed in exact non-Markovian master equations for open quantum system dynamics. However, in many approximated non-Markovian master equations, the positivity of the reduced density matrix is not guaranteed. In this paper we provide a general class of time-local, perturbative, and positivity-preserving non-Markovian master equations generated from stochastic Schr\"odinger equations, particularly quantum-state-diffusion equations. Our method has an expanded range of applicability for accommodating a variety of non-Markovian environments. We show the positivity-preserving master equation for a three-level system coupled to a dissipative bosonic environment as a particular example to exemplify our general approach. We illustrate the numerical simulations with an analysis explaining why the previous approximated non-Markovian master equations cannot guarantee positivity. Our work provides a consistent master equation for studying the non-Markovian dynamics in ultrafast quantum processes and strong-coupling systems.

Interplay between external driving, dissipation and collective effects in the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes

Roie Dann

Understanding how external driving and dissipation jointly influence the dynamics of open quantum systems is essential for advancing the study of non-equilibrium quantum phenomena and developing quantum technologies. The present study addresses the issue by exploring the behavior of open systems in driven optical setups coupled to a bosonic field. Starting from an exact non-Markovian master equation for linear systems, we extend the analysis to an ensemble of quantum emitters and validate the proposed solution. The analytical results unveil a range of intriguing phenomena, including pronounced non-Markovian corrections to the coherent driving and a collective cross-driving effect. These effects are experimentally accessible in platforms such as cavity QED, photonic crystals, and state-dependent optical lattices. In the Markovian limit, comparison with exact solutions reveal short-time non-Markovian effects that endure well beyond the environmental correlation decay time, alongside memory effects triggered by short laser pulses. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamics of driven open systems, laying the groundwork for precise quantum state control.

Non-classicality dynamics of Schrödinger cat states in a non-Markovian environment

Xiang Cheng, Shao-Hua Xiang, Yu-Jing Zhao

Abstract By virtue of the superoperator technique, we solve analytically the non-Markovian master equation that describes single-mode continuous variable system interacting with a structure reservoir. Our analytical solution allows us to investigate the non-Markovian effects on the dynamics of quantum coherence and non-classicality of Schrödinger cat states embedded in various types of structured reservoirs. We show that the dynamical behaviors of the fidelity, entanglement potentials, and higher-order antibunching of such states can be divided into two phases: they decay rapidly within a short time, but would either vanish completely or tend to a nonzero steady-state value in the long-time limit depending on the initial Schrödinger cat states and system parameters. We also show that by examining the Wigner function and higher-order sub-Poissonian statistics, the super-Ohmic environment can better help to protect the non-classicality, whereas the sub-Ohmic environment causes the disappearance of the non-classicality. Our approach is concise and can generalize to other open quantum system coupled to non-Markovian environment at finite-temperature or to linear non-Markovian Gaussian system.

Langevin Theory of Non-Markovian Quantum Dynamics: Application to Delayed Coherent Feedback and the Laser Linewidth

Marc Cuenca-Laràs, Ming Li, Carlos Navarrete-Benlloch +1 more

Phase-space methods are powerful tools for the treatment of Markovian open quantum systems: they map the reduced dynamics of a system S, in interaction with an environment E, exactly onto Langevin equations for c-number stochastic variables, as opposed to Heisenberg-Langevin equations for operators. Langevin equations provide analytical insight in key regimes and excel at handling strong nonlinearities and couplings, where other methods often falter. Extending phase-space methods to non-Markovian dynamics, however, has remained a long-standing challenge. Here we address this gap by applying phase-space representations to the full S+E system; integrating out the environmental degrees of freedom then yields a general Langevin framework for S that incorporates both deterministic and stochastic contributions from E. Normally ordered representations, such as the Glauber-Sudarshan P representation and its positive variant due to Drummond and Gardiner, lead to Langevin equations in which (i) non-Markovian effects emerge exclusively in the deterministic terms, via a memory kernel, and (ii) noise contributions vanish when E is initially in the vacuum state. To demonstrate the power of this framework, we address the paradigmatic problem of delayed coherent feedback, in which the system is driven by its own past state, and study its impact on the laser linewidth: we recover the narrowing observed well above threshold and predict an enhanced narrowing just above it. Crucially, the number of stochastic variables scales linearly with the system size, making the framework suitable for problems ranging from a few degrees of freedom to genuinely many-body systems. This opens the way to the systematic study of non-Markovian driven-dissipative quantum systems using the same analytical and numerical tools that have long made phase-space methods so successful in the Markovian regime.
