Poincare series for local unitary invariants of mixed states of the qubit-qutrit system

Abstract

We consider the mixed states of the bipartite quantum system with the first party a qubit and the second a qutrit. The group of local unitary transformations of the system, ignoring the overall phase factor, is the direct product G of SU(2) and SU(3). We compute the simply graded Poincare series of the algebra of G-invariant polynomial functions on the set of mixed states of the system, and construct several low degree invariants.

Multigraded Poincare series for mixed states of two qubits and the boundary of the set of separable states

Dragomir Ž. Djoković

Let M be the set of mixed states and S the set of separable states of the two-qubit system, and G = SU(2) x SU(2) the group of local unitary transformations (ignoring the overall phase factor). We compute the multigraded Poincare series for the algebra of G-invariant polynomial functions on the affine space of all Hermitian operators of trace 1. We check that this series is consistent with the list of invariants computed by Makhlin. By using the recent result of Augusiak et al., we show that the boundary of S decomposes naturally into two pieces. We prove that the part of this boundary which is contained in the relative interior of M is a smooth manifold.

Local invariants for mixed qubit-qutrit states

Vladimir P. Gerdt, A. Khvedelidze, Dimitar M. Mladenov +1 more

In the present paper few steps are undertaken towards the description of the qubit-qutrit pair - quantum bipartite system composed of two and three level subsystems. The computational difficulties with the construction of the local unitary polynomial invariants are discussed. Calculations of the Molien functions and Poincare series for the qubit-qubit and qubit-qutrit local unitary invariants are outlined and compared with the known results. The requirement of positive semi-definiteness of the density operator is formulated explicitly as a set of inequalities in five Casimir invariants of the algebra su(6).

The mixed two qutrit system: local unitary invariants, entanglement monotones, and the SLOCC group $SL(3,{\mathbb {C}})$

Peter Jarvis

We consider local unitary invariants and entanglement monotones for the mixed two qutrit system. Character methods for the local SU(3)xSU(3) transformation group are used to establish the count of algebraically independent polynomial invariants up to degree 5 in the components of the density operator. These are identified up to quartic degree in the standard basis of Gell-Mann matrices, with the help of the calculus of f and d coefficients. Next, investigating local measurement operations, we study a SLOCC qutrit group, which plays the role of a `relativistic' transformation group analogous to that of the Lorentz group SL(2,C)_R ~ SO(3,1) for the qubit case. This is the group SL(3,C)_R, presented as a group of real 9x9 matrices acting linearly on the 9-dimensional space of projective coordinates for the qutrit density matrix. The counterpart, for qutrits, of the invariant 4x4 Minkowski metric of the qubit case, proves to be a certain 9x9x9 totally symmetric three-fold tensor generalizing the Gell-Mann d coefficient. Using this structure, we provide a count of the corresponding LSL polynomial invariants using group character methods. Finally, we give an explicit construction of the lowest degree quantity (the cubic invariant) and its expansion in terms of SU(3)xSU(3) invariants, and we indicate how to construct higher degree analogues. These quantities are proven to yield entanglement monotones. This work generalizes and partly extends the paper of King, Welsh and Jarvis (Journal of Physics A, 40(33):10083, 2007) on the mixed two qubit system, which is reviewed in an appendix.

On the Ring of Local Unitary Invariants for Mixed X-States of Two Qubits

Vladimir P. Gerdt, A. Khvedelidze, Yu. G. Palii

Entangling properties of a mixed two-qubit system can be described by local homogeneous unitary invariant polynomials in the elements of the density matrix. The structure of the corresponding ring of invariant polynomials for a special subclass of states, the so-called mixed X-states, is established. It is shown that for the X-states there is an injective ring homomorphism of the quotient ring of SU(2)×SU(2)-invariant polynomials modulo its syzygy ideal to the SO(2) × SO(2)-invariant ring freely generated by five homogeneous polynomials of degrees 1, 1, 1, 2, 2.

On the algebra of local unitary invariants of pure and mixed quantum states

Péter Vrana

We study the structure of the inverse limit of the graded algebras of local unitary invariant polynomials using its Hilbert series. For k subsystems, we show that the inverse limit is a free algebra and the number of algebraically independent generators with homogenous degree 2 m equals the number of conjugacy classes of index m subgroups in a free group on k − 1 generators. Similarly, we show that the inverse limit in the case of k -partite mixed state invariants is free and the number of algebraically independent generators with homogenous degree m equals the number of conjugacy classes of index m subgroups in a free group on k generators. The two statements are shown to be equivalent. To illustrate the equivalence, using the representation theory of the unitary groups, we obtain all invariants in the m = 2 graded parts and express them in a simple form both in the case of mixed and pure states. The transformation between the two forms is also derived. Analogous invariants of higher degree are also introduced.

Effective rationality for local unitary invariants of mixed states of two qubits

Luca Candelori, Vladimir Chernyak, John R. Klein +1 more

Abstract We calculate the field of rational local unitary invariants for mixed states of two qubits, by employing methods from algebraic geometry. We prove that this field is rational (i.e. purely transcendental), and that it is generated by nine algebraically independent polynomial invariants. We do so by constructing a relative section, in the sense of invariant theory, whose Weyl group is a finite abelian group. From this construction, we are able to give explicit expressions for the generating invariants in terms of the Bloch matrix representation of mixed states of two qubits. We also prove similar rationality results for the local unitary invariants of symmetrically mixed states of two qubits. We also provide a sketch of how to generalize our results to the case of an arbitrary number of qubits. Our results apply to both complex-valued and real-valued invariants.
