Abstract

We address joint photodetection as a method for discriminating between the classical correlations of a thermal beam divided by a beam splitter and the quantum entanglement of a twin beam obtained by parametric down-conversion. We show that for intense beams of light the detection of the difference photocurrent may be used, in principle, in order to reveal entanglement, while the simple measurement of the correlation coefficient is not sufficient. We have experimentally measured the correlation coefficient and the variance of the difference photocurrent for several classical and quantum states. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions taking into account the extra noise in the generated fields that is due to the pump laser fluctuations.

Experimental investigation of the intensity fluctuation joint probability and conditional distributions of the twin-beam quantum state

Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai, Masayoshi Watanabe

We give the intensity fluctuation joint probability of the twin-beam quantum state, which was generated with an optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold. Then we present what to our knowledge is the first measurement of the intensity fluctuation conditional probability distributions of twin beams. The measured inference variance of twin beams 0.62+/-0.02, which is less than the standard quantum limit of unity, indicates inference with a precision better than that of separable states. The measured photocurrent variance exhibits a quantum correlation of as much as -4.9+/-0.2 dB between the signal and the idler.

Investigation of the photon-number statistics of twin beams by direct detection

Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai, Masayoshi Watanabe

We present the results of an experiment in which we observed photon-number statistics of twin beams emerging from a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator. We generated the photocurrent for recording by detecting the light and mixing it with a standard electrical oscillator. The measured photocurrent variances exhibited a quantum correlation of as much as -4.9 dB between signal and idler, whereas their photon number distributions were super-Poissonian. We also obtained the difference photon-number distribution.

State reconstruction of a multimode twin beam using photodetection

Robust and reliable method for reconstructing quasidistributions of integrated intensities of twin beams generated in spontaneous parametric down conversion and entangled in photon numbers is suggested. It utilizes the first and second photocount moments and minimizes the declination from experimental photocount histograms. Qualitatively, different forms of quasidistributions for quantum and classical states are suggested in the method. The transition from quantum to classical states caused by an increased detection noise is discussed. Momentum criterion for nonclassicality of twin beams is suggested.

Experimental Realization of a Quantum Measurement for Intensity Difference Fluctuation Using a Beam Splitter

Hai Wang, Yun Zhang, Qing Pan +4 more

A new quantum measurement scheme of intensity difference fluctuation between two light beams of equal mean intensity is presented. In this system a beam splitter is used as the coupling device and the twin beams with high quantum correlation are injected into its dark port as the input meter wave instead of the usual vacuum field. A measurement satisfying all the quantum nondemolition criteria is experimentally achieved. The measured sum of the transfer coefficients and the conditional variance are, respectively, ${T}_{s}{+T}_{m}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1.31$ and ${V}_{s/m}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}2.1\mathrm{dB}$.

Joint probability and conditional distribution of twin beams

Yun Zhang, Katsuyuki Kasai

Joint probability and conditional distribution of twin beams generated by an optical parametric oscillator is reported. We select the photon number fluctuation (intensity fluctuation) as our measured variable. In direct detection with a photodetector, given the high detection efficiency, the photocurrent fluctuation is corresponding to the photon number fluctuation.

DYNAMICS OF QUANTUM CORRELATIONS OF TWO INTERFERING BIPARTITE GAUSSIAN STATES

Stefano Olivares

We address the interference of a pair of two-mode Gaussian states, interacting pairwise through a beam-splitter Hamiltonian. In the framework of a suitable phase-space analysis, the correlations generated through the interaction are studied by considering a quantity proportional to the variance of difference between the detected photocurrents of all the possible couples of modes. We use this quantity to demonstrate the invariance through the interaction and the correlations swapping also in the presence of nonideal photodetection.
