Recurrent fourth-order interference dips and peaks with a comblike two-photon entangled state

Abstract

We demonstrate full selective control over the constructive or destructive character of fourth-order recurrent interferences in a modified version of a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer using comblike two-photon states. The comb spectral/temporal structure is obtained by inserting an etalon cavity in the signal path of an entangled photon pair obtained by pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Both a simple qualitative discussion and a complete theoretical derivation are used to explain and analyze the experimental data.

Fourth-Order Interference in Femtosecond Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion

Yun-Kun Jiang, Bao-Sen Shi, Jian Li +2 more

We report a fourth-order interference experiment in which pairs of photons are produced in spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by femtosecond pulses interfere in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. The visibility of the interference is (64±4)%, exceeding the bound of 50% predicted by classical interference theory.

Mode-Locked Two-Photon States

Y. J. Lu, R. L. Campbell, Z. Y. Ou

The concept of mode locking in laser is applied to a two-photon state with frequency entanglement. Cavity enhanced parametric down conversion is found to produce exactly such a state. The mode-locked two-photon state exhibits a comblike correlation function. An unbalanced Hong-Ou-Mandel type interferometer is used to measure the correlation function. A revival of the typical interference dip is observed. We will discuss a scheme for engineering of quantum states in time domain.

Hectometer Revivals of Quantum Interference

Markus Rambach, W. Y. Sarah Lau, Simon Laibacher +3 more

Cavity-enhanced single photon sources exhibit mode-locked biphoton states with comblike correlation functions. Our ultrabright source additionally emits single photon pairs as well as two-photon NOON states, dividing the output into an even and an odd comb, respectively. With even-comb photons we demonstrate revivals of the typical nonclassical Hong-Ou-Mandel interference up to the 84th dip, corresponding to a path length difference exceeding 100 m. With odd-comb photons we observe single photon interference fringes modulated over twice the displacement range of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference.

Generalized quantum interference of correlated photon pairs

Heonoh Kim, Sang Min Lee, Han Seb Moon

Superposition and indistinguishablility between probability amplitudes have played an essential role in observing quantum interference effects of correlated photons. The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference and interferences of the path-entangled photon number state are of special interest in the field of quantum information technologies. However, a fully generalized two-photon quantum interferometric scheme accounting for the Hong-Ou-Mandel scheme and path-entangled photon number states has not yet been proposed. Here we report the experimental demonstrations of the generalized two-photon interferometry with both the interferometric properties of the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect and the fully unfolded version of the path-entangled photon number state using photon-pair sources, which are independently generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Our experimental scheme explains two-photon interference fringes revealing single- and two-photon coherence properties in a single interferometer setup. Using the proposed interferometric measurement, it is possible to directly estimate the joint spectral intensity of a photon pair source.

Time control of two-photon interference

M. A. Sagioro, C. Olindo, Carlos Henrique Monken +1 more

The interference of photons with the same polarization generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, after one of them passed through a symmetric cavity, is demonstrated experimentally. In the regime where the cavity length is larger than the one-photon coherence length, photon coalescence and anticoalescence interference is observed. We show that by changing the cavity length, coincidence peaks can be transformed in dips and vice versa, even though the coherence length of the photon wave packet is smaller than the cavity length. The photon pair coalescence or anticoalescence at the beam splitter can be controlled by changing the length of the cavity.
