Continuous-variable entanglement and quantum-state teleportation between optical and macroscopic vibrational modes through radiation pressure

Abstract

We study an isolated, perfectly reflecting, mirror illuminated by an intense laser pulse. We show that the resulting radiation pressure efficiently entangles a mirror vibrational mode with the two reflected optical sideband modes of the incident carrier beam. The entanglement of the resulting three-mode state is studied in detail and it is shown to be robust against the mirror mode temperature. We then show how this continuous-variable entanglement can be profitably used to teleport an unknown quantum state of an optical mode onto the vibrational mode of the mirror.

Continuous variable entanglement by radiation pressure

We show that when an intense and quasi-monochromatic laser field is incident on a single vibrating and perfectly reflecting mirror in free space, radiation pressure realizes an effective coupling between a mirror vibrational mode and the first two optical sidebands of the incident field. The two reflected sidebands are in fact entangled by the optomechanical interaction and the resulting continuous variable entanglement proves to be robust against the thermal noise acting on the vibrational mode. If the duration of the incident laser pulse is appropriately chosen, the resulting state of the two sideband modes becomes an exact two-mode squeezed state.

Continuous variable entanglement by radiation pressure

We show that the radiation pressure of an intense optical field impinging on a perfectly reflecting vibrating mirror is able to entangle in a robust way the first two optical sideband modes. Under appropriate conditions, the generated entangled state is of EPR type [A. Einstein, {\\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. {\\bf 47}, 777 (1935)].

We study the possibility to teleport an unkown quantum state onto the vibrational degree of freedom of a movable mirror. The quantum channel between the two parties is established by exploiting radiation pressure effects.

Entanglement in macroscopic optomechanical systems

David Vitali, Claudiu Genes, Stefano Mancini +1 more

We consider an optical cavity made by two moving mirrors and driven by an intense classical laser field. We determine the steady state of he optomechanical system and show that two vibrational modes of the mirrors, with effective mass of the order of micrograms, can be entangled thanks to the effect of radiation pressure. The resulting entanglement is however quite fragile with respect to temperature.

Optomechanical devices, entanglement and teleportation

Andrea Mari

In this thesis we study continuous variable systems, focusing on optomechanical devices where a laser field interacts with a macroscopic mechanical oscillator through radiation pressure. We consider the optimization problem of quantum teleportation by means of Gaussian local operations and we study the relation between the amount of entanglement shared by Alice and Bob and the maximum fidelity they can reach for the teleportation of coherent states. We also theoretically predict the possibility of creating a robust entanglement between a mechanical mode of a Fabry-Perot mirror and the Stokes sideband of the output field. We show that by driving two different optical modes supported by the cavity, a stable steady state is reachable in which the optomechanical entanglement is significantly improved.
