Spin-1/2 particle on a cylinder with radial magnetic field

Abstract

We study the motion of a quantum charged particle, constrained on the surface of a cylinder, in the presence of a radial magnetic field. When the spin of the particle is neglected, the system essentially reduces to an infinite family of simple harmonic oscillators, equally spaced along the axis of the cylinder. Interestingly enough, it can be used as a quantum Fourier transformer, with convenient visual output. When the spin-1/2 of the particle is taken into account, a non-conventional perturbative analysis results in a recursive closed form for the corrections to the energy and the wavefunction, for all eigenstates, to all orders in the magnetic moment of the particle. A simple two-state system is also presented, the time evolution of which involves an approximate precession of the spin perpendicularly to the magnetic field. A number of plots highlight the findings while several three-dimensional animations have been made available on the web.

Magnetization dynamics of a harmonically confined quantum charged particle in time dependent magnetic fields inside a circular solenoid

V. V. Dodonov

Abstract I consider a quantum spinless charged particle moving in the xy plane under the action of a time-dependent magnetic field described by means of the linear vector potential in the ‘circular’ gauge A = B ( t )(− y , x )/2 and in the presence of the confining potential m g 2 x 2 + y 2 / 2 . This potential guarantees finite values of all second-order moments in the initial equilibrium (thermal) state. Time-dependent mean values of the energy and magnetic moment are expressed in terms of solutions to the classical equation of motion ε ̈ + Ω 2 ( t ) ε = 0 . Simple approximate results are found in the cases of the sudden jump of magnetic field, the parametric resonance, and the adiabatic evolution. They are compared with exact solutions in terms of the hypergeometric function for the specific function B ( t ) of the Epstein–Eckart type. A great amplification of the magnetic moment is discovered for the initial high-temperature states, both for the fast and slow monotonous variations of the magnetic field. Classical adiabatic invariants do not exist if the magnetic field slowly goes to zero or changes its sign.

Quantum dynamics of a particle constrained to lie on a surface

Gustavo de Oliveira

We consider the quantum dynamics of a charged particle in Euclidean space subjected to electric and magnetic fields under the presence of a potential that forces the particle to stay close to a compact surface. We prove that, as the strength of this constraining potential tends to infinity, the motion of this particle converges to a motion generated by a Hamiltonian over the surface superimposed by an oscillatory motion in the normal directions. Our result extends previous results by allowing magnetic potentials and more general constraining potentials.

Hermitian and gauge-covariant Hamiltonians for a particle in a magnetic field on cylindrical and spherical surfaces

M S Shikakhwa, N Chair

Abstract We construct the Hermitian Schrödinger Hamiltonian of spin-less particles and the gauge-covariant Pauli Hamiltonian of spin one-half particles in a magnetic field, which are confined to cylindrical and spherical surfaces. The approach does not require the use of involved differential-geometrical methods and is intuitive and physical, relying on the general requirements of Hermicity and gauge-covariance. The surfaces are embedded in the full three-dimensional space and confinement to the surfaces is achieved by strong radial potentials. We identify the Hermitian and gauge-covariant (in the presence of a magnetic field) physical radial momentum in each case and set it to zero upon confinement to the surfaces. The resulting surface Hamiltonians are seen to be automatically Hermitian and gauge-covariant. The well-known geometrical kinetic energy also emerges naturally.

Charged particle in the presence of a variable magnetic field

M. Sebawe Abdalla

A solution in closed analytic form is obtained for the motion of a charged harmonic oscillator in a variable magnetic field. The time-dependent Schr\"odinger wave equation is solved in both Cartesian and polar coordinates. The canonical density matrix is calculated via the quasicoherent states.

The time-dependent coupled oscillator model for the motion of a charged particle in the presence of a time-varying magnetic field

Salah Menouar, Mustapha Maamache, Jeong Ryeol Choi

The dynamics of time-dependent coupled oscillator model for the charged particle motion subjected to a time-dependent external magnetic field is investigated. We used canonical transformation approach for the classical treatment of the system, whereas unitary transformation approach is used when managing the system in the framework of quantum mechanics. For both approaches, the original system is transformed to a much more simple system that is the sum of two independent harmonic oscillators which have time-dependent frequencies. We therefore easily identified the wave functions in the transformed system with the help of invariant operator of the system. The full wave functions in the original system is derived from the inverse unitary transformation of the wave functions associated to the transformed system.

SINGLE-PARTICLE QUANTUM DYNAMICS IN A MAGNETIC LATTICE

Marco Venturini, Ronald D. Ruth

We study the quantum dynamics of a spinless charged-particle propagating through a magnetic lattice in a transport line or storage ring. Starting from the Klein-Gordon equation and by applying the paraxial approximation, we derive a Schrodinger-like equation for the betatron motion. A suitable unitary transformation reduces the problem to that of a simple harmonic oscillator. As a result we are able to nd an explicit expression for the particle wavefunction.
