Tunneling in asymmetric double well: instanton calculus

Abstract

The level splitting formula of an asymmetric double well potential is calculated taking into account the multi-instanton contributions (dilute gas approximation). Results can be related with known semiclassical ones obtained with a truncated hamiltonian, and the symmetric case is easily recovered.

Tunneling and energy splitting in an asymmetric double-well potential

Dae-Yup Song

An asymmetric double-well potential is considered, assuming that the minima of the wells are quadratic with a frequency ω and the difference of the minima is close to a multiple of ω. A WKB wave function is constructed on both sides of the local maximum between the wells, by matching the WKB function to the exact wave functions near the classical turning points. The continuities of the wave function and its first derivative at the local maximum then give the energy-level splitting formula, which not only reproduces the instanton result for a symmetric potential, but also elucidates the appearance of resonances of tunneling in the asymmetric potential. A generalized semiclassical expression for the eigenvalues of multiple well potentials

Fabiano M. Andrade, Bin Kang Cheng, Marcus W. Beims +1 more

From the poles of a generalized semiclassical Green's function we derive expressions for the eigenvalues of 1D multiple well potentials. In the case of asymmetric and symmetric double wells, we also obtain analytical formulae for, respectively, the shift and splitting of energies. Our results are better than some approximations in the literature because they take more properly into account the tunnelling through the barriers forming the multiple well and depend on energy-dependent Maslov indices. We illustrate the good numerical precision of the method by discussing some case tests on double wells.

Double well ground state energy splitting (or instanton flipping rate); rendering the implicit explicit

J H Hannay

A prime example of quantum tunnelling is the semiclassical 'energy splitting' of the levels of a symmetrical double well potential, or equivalently the flipping rate of an instanton. Curiously the accepted expression for the ground state energy splitting in terms of the (smooth) potential function has not been pursued to the full explicitness available from classical mechanics. This implicitness is rectified here.

Semiclassical formula for quantum tunneling in asymmetric double-well potentials

Gianluca Rastelli

Despite the fact that quantum tunneling has been studied since the advent of quantum mechanics, the literature appears to contain no simple (textbook) formula for tunneling in generic asymmetric double-well potentials. In the regime of strong localization, I derive a succinct analytical formula based on the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin semiclassical approach. Two different examples of asymmetric potentials are discussed: the cases when the two localized levels are degenerate and when they are not degenerate. For the first case, I also discuss a time-dependent problem showing the quantum Zeno effect.

Instantons revisited: dynamical tunnelling and resonant tunnelling

Jérémy Le Deunff, Amaury Mouchet

Starting from trace formulae for the tunnelling splittings (or decay rates) analytically continued in the complex time domain, we obtain explicit semiclassical expansions in terms of complex trajectories that are selected with appropriate complex-time paths. We show how this instanton-like approach, which takes advantage of an incomplete Wick rotation, accurately reproduces tunnelling effects not only in the usual double-well potential but also in situations where a pure Wick rotation is insufficient, for instance dynamical tunnelling or resonant tunnelling. Even though only one-dimensional autonomous Hamiltonian systems are quantitatively studied, we discuss the relevance of our method for multidimensional and/or chaotic tunnelling.

Instantonic Approach to Triple-Well Potential

Soo-Young Lee, Jae-Rok Kahng, Sahng-Kyoon Yoo +4 more

By using the usual instanton method, we obtain the energy splitting due to quantum tunneling through the triple-well barrier. It is shown that the term related to the midpoint of the energy splitting in propagator is quite different from that of double-well case, in that it is proportional to the algebraic average of the frequencies of the left and central wells. The result of the energy splitting is consistent with the known variational calculation.
