Conditional preparation of maximal polarization entanglement

Abstract

A simple experimental setup consisting of a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source and passive linear optics is proposed for conditional preparation of a maximally entangled polarization state of two photons. Successful preparation is unambiguously heralded by coincident detection of four auxiliary photons. The proposed scheme utilizes the down-conversion term corresponding to the generation of three pairs of photons. We analyze imperfect detection of the auxiliary photons and demonstrate that its deleterious effect on the fidelity of the prepared state can be suppressed at the cost of decreasing the efficiency of the scheme.

Conditional preparation of X (2) macroscopic entangled states

Sergey A. Podoshvedov

Two experimental arrangements consisting of coupled spontaneous parametric down-converters with type-I phase matching pumped simultaneously by a powerful optical field in a coherent state through a balanced beam splitter and linear optical elements are proposed for conditional preparation of macroscopic entangled states in output pumping modes of the studied system. Successful generation of the macroscopic entangled state in the pumping modes is unambiguously heralded by coincident detection of two photons in the generated signal and idler modes of the system. We calculate the amount of entanglement and probabilities of successfully observing the X (2) macroscopic entangled states in the total wavefunction. We show that the proposed schemes can be used to obtain a new type of macroscopic entangled states.

Scheme for preparation of the W-state by using linear optical elements

Guo‐Yong Xiang, Yongsheng Zhang, Jian Li +1 more

We present an experimental scheme of preparing the three-photon W-state in this paper. This scheme is based on a linear optical element, four polarization-entangled photons produced in spontaneous parametric down-conversion and single-photon detection. Effects of the imperfection of optical elements on nonlocality are also discussed.

Generating a four-photon polarization-entangled cluster state

Xu‐Bo Zou, Wolfgang M. Mathis

We propose a scheme to generate a four-photon polarization-entangled cluster state by using only linear optical elements and four-photon coincidence detection. The scheme requires two single-photon states and one two-photon polarization entangled state as input resources. Then, we consider the realistic implementation of the scheme by using the spontaneous parametric down-conversion as photon resources. It is shown that under certain conditions, the four-photon polarization cluster state can be generated with a high fidelity, and the scheme is feasible by current experimental technology.

Experimental Engineering of Photonic Quantum Entanglement

Stefanie Barz, G. Cronenberg, Philip John Walther

Entangled photons are a crucial resource for linear optical quantum communication and quantum computation. Besides the remarkable progress of photon state engineering using atomic memories (Kimble (2008); Yuan et al. (2008)) the majority of current experiments is based on the production of photon pairs in the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), where the entangled photon pair is concluded from post-selection of randomly occurring coincidences. Here we present new insights into the heralded generation of photon states (Barz et al. (2010); Wagenknecht et al. (2010)) that are maximally entangled in polarization (Schrodinger (1935)) with linear optics and standard photon detection from SPDC (Kwiat et al. (1995)). We utilize the down-conversion state corresponding to the generation of three pairs of photons, where the coincident detection of four auxiliary photons unambiguously heralds the successful preparation of the entangled state (Śliwa & Banaszek (2003)). This controlled generation of entangled photon states is a significant step towards the applicability of a linear optics quantum network (Nielsen & Chuang (2000)), in particular for entanglement distribution (Bennett et al. (1996)), entanglement swapping (Kaltenbaek et al. (2009); Pan et al. (1998)), quantum teleportation (Bouwmeester et al. (1997)), quantum cryptography (Bennett & Brassard (1984); Ekert (1991); Jennewein et al. (2000)) and scalable approaches towards photonics-based quantum computing schemes (Browne & Rudolph (2004); Gottesman & Chuang (1999); Knill et al. (2001)).

We propose a scheme to generate an N-photon GHZ-type polarization-entangled state from 2N − 1 parametric down-conversion sources, by using only linear optical elements and projective measurements. Successful preparation is heralded by detecting 3N − 2 photons with ideal number-resolving photon detectors.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs generation via interference of nonorthogonal quantum states

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

We report a new method for generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states. Our approach is based on quantum interference between two polarization states which are non-orthogonal. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for generation the photon pair in a maximally entangled state. The effect of dependence of entanglement on the phase between the interfering states of photons is investigated theoretically and demonstrated experimentally with quantum states produced via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the double-crystal scheme.
