Nonlinear Evolution of Quantum States in the Adiabatic Regime

Abstract

We investigate adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our analysis not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates but also characterizes the motion of noneigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions and are conserved in the adiabatic evolution of noneigenstates.

Geometric Phase for Adiabatic Evolutions of General Quantum States

Biao Wu, Jie Liu, Qian Niu

The concept of a geometric phase (Berry's phase) is generalized to the case of noneigenstates, which is applicable to both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. This is particularly important to nonlinear quantum systems, where, due to the lack of the superposition principle, the adiabatic evolution of a general state cannot be described in terms of eigenstates. For linear quantum systems, our new geometric phase reduces to a statistical average of Berry's phases. Our results are demonstrated with a nonlinear two-level model.

Berry phase in nonlinear systems

Jian Liu, Libin Fu

The Berry phase acquired by an eigenstate that experienced a nonlinear adiabatic evolution is investigated thoroughly. The circuit integral of the Berry connection of the instantaneous eigenstate cannot account for the adiabatic geometric phase, while the Bogoliubov excitations around the eigenstates are found to be accumulated during the nonlinear adiabatic evolution and contribute a finite phase of geometric nature. A two-mode model is used to illustrate our theory. Our theory is applicable to Bose-Einstein condensate, nonlinear light propagation, and Ginzburg-Landau equations for complex order parameters in condensed-matter physics.

Adiabatic tunneling of Bose—Einstein condensates with modulated atom interaction in a double-well potential

Xin Xiao-Tian, Fang Huang, Xu Zhi-Jun +1 more

We study the adiabatic tunneling of Bose—Einstein condensates in a symmetric double-well potential when the interaction strength between the atoms is modulated linearly or in a cosine periodic form. It is shown that the system evolves along a nonlinear eigenstate path. In the case of linear modulation under the adiabatic approximation conditions, the tunneling probability of the condensate atoms to the other potential well is half. However, when the system is periodically scanned in the adiabatic process, we find an interesting phenomenon. A small change in the cycle period can lead to the condensate atoms returning to the right well or tunneling to the left well. The system comes from a linear eigenstate back to a nonlinear one, which is completely different from the linear eigenstate evolution. We explain the results by using the energy level and the phase diagram.

Adiabaticity in nonlinear quantum dynamics: Bose-Einstein condensate in a time-varying box

Y. B. Band, Boris A. Malomed, Marek Trippenbach

A simple model of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a box whose size varies with time is studied to determine the nature of adiabaticity in the nonlinear dynamics obtained within the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation). Analytical and numerical methods are used to determine the nature of adiabaticity in this nonlinear quantum system. Criteria for validity of an adiabatic approximation are formulated.

Universality in nonadiabatic behavior of classical actions in nonlinear models of Bose-Einstein condensates

A. P. Itin, Shinichi Watanabe

We discuss the dynamics of approximate adiabatic invariants in several nonlinear models being related to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We show that the nonadiabatic dynamics in Feshbach resonance passage, nonlinear Landau-Zener (NLZ) tunneling, and BEC tunneling oscillations in a double well can be considered within a unifying approach based on the theory of separatrix crossings. The separatrix crossing theory was applied previously to some problems of classical mechanics, plasma physics, and hydrodynamics, but has not been used in the rapidly growing BEC-related field yet. We derive explicit formulas for the change in the action in several models. Extensive numerical calculations support the theory and demonstrate its universal character. We also discovered a nonlinear phenomenon in the NLZ model which we propose to call separated adiabatic tunneling.
