Abstract

We discuss the dynamics of approximate adiabatic invariants in several nonlinear models being related to the physics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We show that the nonadiabatic dynamics in Feshbach resonance passage, nonlinear Landau-Zener (NLZ) tunneling, and BEC tunneling oscillations in a double well can be considered within a unifying approach based on the theory of separatrix crossings. The separatrix crossing theory was applied previously to some problems of classical mechanics, plasma physics, and hydrodynamics, but has not been used in the rapidly growing BEC-related field yet. We derive explicit formulas for the change in the action in several models. Extensive numerical calculations support the theory and demonstrate its universal character. We also discovered a nonlinear phenomenon in the NLZ model which we propose to call separated adiabatic tunneling.

Change in the adiabatic invariant in a nonlinear Landau-Zener problem

Ruzan Sokhoyan, D. Melikdzhanian, Claude Leroy +2 more

We study a nonlinear generalization of the Landau-Zener resonance-crossing problem relevant to coherent photo- and magneto-association of ultracold atoms. Due to the structure of the corresponding classical phase space, the adiabatic theorem breaks down even at very small sweep rates, and the adiabatic approximation diverges because of the crossing of a separatrix. First, by introducing a complex term into the Hamiltonian of the system, we eliminate this divergence and construct a valid zero-order approximation. Further, taking into account that the molecular conversion efficiency and the change of the classical adiabatic invariant at the separatrix crossing are related quantities, we calculate the change of the action for the situation when the system starts from the all-atomic state that corresponds to the case of zero initial action. The absolute error of the presented formula for the change in the action is of the order of or less than 10^-4.

Mean-field dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a time-dependent triple-well trap: Nonlinear eigenstates, Landau-Zener models, and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage

Eva-Maria Graefe, H. J. Korsch, Dirk Witthaut

We investigate the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a triple-well trap in a three-level approximation. The interatomic interactions are taken into account in a mean-field approximation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation), leading to a nonlinear three-level model. Additional eigenstates emerge due to the nonlinearity, depending on the system parameters. Adiabaticity breaks down if such a nonlinear eigenstate disappears when the parameters are varied. The dynamical implications of this loss of adiabaticity are analyzed for two important special cases: A three-level Landau-Zener model and the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) scheme. We discuss the emergence of looped levels for an equal-slope Landau-Zener model. The Zener tunneling probability does not tend to zero in the adiabatic limit and shows pronounced oscillations as a function of the velocity of the parameter variation. Furthermore we generalize the STIRAP scheme for adiabatic coherent population transfer between atomic states to the nonlinear case. It is shown that STIRAP breaks down if the nonlinearity exceeds the detuning.

Non-adiabaticity and nonlinearity of a many-particle Landau-Zener problem: classical adiabatic theory approach

A. P. Itin, Päivi Törmä

We consider dynamics of Dicke models, with and without counterrotating terms, under slow variations of parameters which drive the system through a quantum phase transition. The model without counterrotating terms and sweeped detuning is seen in the contexts of a many-body generalization of the Landau-Zener model and the dynamical passage through a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT). Adiabaticity is destroyed when the parameter crosses a critical value. Applying semiclassical analysis based on concepts of classical adiabatic invariants and mapping to the second Painleve equation (PII), we derive a formula which accurately describes particle distributions in the Hilbert space at wide range of parameters and initial conditions of the system. We find striking universal features in the particle distributions which can be probed in an experiment on Feshbach resonance passage or a cavity QED experiment. The dynamics is found to be crucially dependent on the direction of the sweep. The model with counterrotating terms has been realized recently in an experiment with ultracold atomic gases in a cavity. Its semiclassical dynamics is described by a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. Passage through a QPT corresponds to passage through a bifurcation, and can also be described by PII (after averaging over fast variables), leading to similar universal distributions. Under certain conditions, the Dicke model is reduced to the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model.

Time-dependent tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates

O. Zobay, B. M. Garraway

The influence of atomic interactions on time-dependent tunneling processes of Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated. In a variety of contexts the relevant condensate dynamics can be described by a Landau-Zener equation modified by the appearance of nonlinear contributions. Based on this equation it is discussed how the interactions modify the tunneling probability. In particular, it is shown that for certain parameter values, due to a nonlinear hysteresis effect, complete adiabatic population transfer is impossible however slowly the resonance is crossed. The results also indicate that the interactions can cause significant increase as well as decrease of tunneling probabilities that should be observable in currently feasible experiments.

Adiabatic transport of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well trap: Case of weak nonlinearity

Valentin O. Nesterenko, A. N. Novikov, E. Suraud

A complete adiabatic transport of Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap is investigated within the Landau-Zener (LZ), and Gaussian Landau-Zener (GLZ) schemes for the case of a small non-linearity, when the atomic interaction is weaker than the coupling. The schemes use the constant (LZ) and time-dependent Gaussian (GLZ) couplings. The mean field calculations show that LZ and GLZ suggest essentially different transport dynamics. Significant deviations from the case of a strong coupling are discussed.
