Entanglement manipulation and concentration

Abstract

We introduce a simple, experimentally realizable, entanglement manipulation protocol for exploring mixed-state entanglement. We show that for both nonmaximally entangled pure, and mixed polarization-entangled two-qubit states, an increase in the degree of entanglement and purity, is achievable.

Entanglement Manipulation and Concentration in Mixed States

Rob Thew, Kae Nemoto, William J. Munro

We introduce a simple experimentally realisable protocol for manipulating entanglement in mixed states of two polarisation-entangled qubits and show how concentration is achievable. We discuss a second protocol based on entanglement swapping with mixed states and show how the shared entanglement between distant parties can be improved.

Mixed state entanglement: Manipulating polarization-entangled photons

Rob Thew, William J. Munro

There has recently been much discussion regarding entanglement transformations in terms of local filtering operations and whether the optimal entanglement for an arbitrary two-qubit state could be realized. We introduce an experimentally realizable scheme for manipulating the entanglement of an arbitrary state of two polarization-entangled qubits. This scheme is then used to provide some perspective to the mathematical concepts inherent in this field with respect to a laboratory environment. Specifically, we look at how to extract enhanced entanglement from systems with a fixed rank, and, in the case where the rank of the density operator for the state can be reduced, show how the state can be made arbitrarily close to a maximally entangled pure state. In this context we also discuss bounds on entanglement in mixed states.

We propose a scheme for concentrating nonmaximally pure and mixed polarization-entangled state of individual photon pairs. The scheme uses only simple linear optical elements and may be feasible within current optical technology.

Maximizing the entanglement of two mixed qubits

William J. Munro, Daniel F. V. James, Andrew G. White +1 more

Two-qubit states occupy a large and relatively unexplored Hilbert space. Such states can be succinctly characterized by their degree of entanglement and purity. In this article we investigate entangled mixed states and present a class of states that have the maximum amount of entanglement for a given linear entropy.

Experimental preparation and manipulation of quantum entangled states

This paper presents our experimental work on preparing and manipulating quantum entangled states in optical quantum information processing systems. The main contents are: (1) Using continuous wave(CW) laser beam to pump nonlinear crystals we successfully prepared two-photon polarization entangled states with high brightness and entanglement degree, and it is tunable in entanglement degree and we use this source to produce one kind of important mixed states——Werner states with tunable entanglement fraction in it. (2) We realized the 1→2 qubits Buek-Hillery cloning machine with linear optical devices and showed that the fidelities between the two output qubits and the original qubit are both 5/6 for arbitrary input pure states. (3) We presented a method to test the maximal violation of the CHSH inequality for non-maximally entangled pure states and experimentally realized it with our entangled state source. (4) We perform an all-or-nothing-type Kochen-Specker experiment to verify whether non-contextual hidden variables (NCHV) or quantum mechanics is right. The results strongly agree with quantum mechanics.
