Maximizing the entanglement of two mixed qubits

Abstract

Two-qubit states occupy a large and relatively unexplored Hilbert space. Such states can be succinctly characterized by their degree of entanglement and purity. In this article we investigate entangled mixed states and present a class of states that have the maximum amount of entanglement for a given linear entropy.

MAXIMIZING GENUINE MULTIPARTITE ENTANGLEMENT OF N MIXED QUBITS

SHANTANU AGARWAL, Seyed Mohammad Hashemi Rafsanjani

Beyond the simplest case of bipartite qubits, the composite Hilbert space of multipartite systems is largely unexplored. In order to explore such systems, it is important to derive analytic expressions for parameters which characterize the system's state space. Two such parameters are the degree of genuine multipartite entanglement and the degree of mixedness of the system's state. We explore these two parameters for an N-qubit system whose density matrix has an X form. We derive the class of states that has the maximum amount of genuine multipartite entanglement for a given amount of mixedness. We compare our results with the existing results for the N = 2 case. The critical amount of mixedness above which no N-qubit X-state possesses genuine multipartite entanglement is derived. It is found that as N increases, states with higher mixedness can still be entangled.

Maximally Entangled Mixed States and the Bell Inequality

William J. Munro, Kae Nemoto

Abstract Recently a class of maximally entangled states has been proposed that has the maximum amount of entanglement for a given purity. We investigate how much such states violate the conventional Bell inequality and discuss its implication.

Maximally entangled mixed states of two qubits

Frank Verstraete, Koenraad M. R. Audenaert, Bart De Moor

We consider mixed states of two qubits and show under which global unitary operations their entanglement is maximized. This leads to a class of states that is a generalization of the Bell states. Three measures of entanglement are considered: entanglement of formation, negativity, and relative entropy of entanglement. Surprisingly all states that maximize one measure also maximize the others. We give a complete characterization of these generalized Bell states and prove that these states for fixed eigenvalues are all equivalent under local unitary transformations. Furthermore we characterize all nearly entangled states closest to the maximally mixed state and derive a lower bound on the volume of separable mixed states.

Entangling power of two-qubit gates on mixed states

Zhe Guan, Huan He, Yong-Jian Han +3 more

The ability to reach a maximally entangled state from a separable one through the use of a two-qubit unitary operator is analyzed for mixed states. This extension from the known case of pure states shows that there are at least two families of gates which are able to give maximum entangling power for all values of purity. It is notable that one of this gates coincides with a maximum discording one. We give analytical proof that such gate is indeed a perfect entangler at all purities and give numerical evidence for the existence of the second one. Furthermore, we find that there are other gates, many in fact, which are perfect entanglers for a restricted range of purities. This highlights the fact that many perfect entangler gates could in principle be found if a thorough analysis of the full parameter space is performed.

Maximal entanglement versus entropy for mixed quantum states

Tzu-Chieh Wei, Kae Nemoto, Paul M. Goldbart +3 more

Maximally entangled mixed states are those states that, for a given mixedness, achieve the greatest possible entanglement. For two-qubit systems and for various combinations of entanglement and mixedness measures, the form of the corresponding maximally entangled mixed states is determined primarily analytically. As measures of entanglement, we consider entanglement of formation, relative entropy of entanglement, and negativity; as measures of mixedness, we consider linear and von Neumann entropies. We show that the forms of the maximally entangled mixed states can vary with the combination of (entanglement and mixedness) measures chosen. Moreover, for certain combinations, the forms of the maximally entangled mixed states can change discontinuously at a specific value of the entropy. Along the way, we determine the states that, for a given value of entropy, achieve maximal violation of Bell's inequality.

Entanglement versus entropy for a class of mixed two-qutrit states

Łukasz Derkacz, Lech Jakóbczyk

We compute the measure of entanglement for some classes of states belonging to the simplex of Bell-diagonal states of two qutrits introduced by Baumgartner et al. [Phys. Rev. A 74, 032327 (2006)]. We discuss also partial characterization of that simplex in terms of negativity and linear entropy. A numerical exploration of the entropy-entanglement plane indicates that, in the analogy to the two-qubit case [Munro et al., Phys. Rev. A 64, 030302(R) (2001)], two-qutrit Werner states do not maximize entanglement for a given entropy.
