Abstract

One-dimensional motion of Sommerfeld sphere in the case of potential barrier is numerically investigated. The effect of classical tunneling is found out - Sommerfeld sphere overcomes the barrier and finds itself in the forbidden, from classical point of view, area.

Classical Tunneling as the Result of Retardation in Classical Electrodynamics: Nonrelativistic Case

А. А. Власов

In nonrelativistic approximation one-dimensional motion of Sommerfeld sphere in the case of potential barrier is numerically investigated. The effect of classical tunneling is confirmed once more - Sommerfeld sphere overcomes the barrier and finds itself in the forbidden, from classical point of view, area.

Sommerfeld Particle in Static Magnetic Field: Tunneling and Delayed Untwisting in Cyclotron

А. А. Власов

Motion of a charged particle with finite size, described by Sommerfeld model, in static magnetic field has two peculiar features: 1.) there is the effect of tunneling - Sommerfeld particle overcomes the barrier and finds itself in the forbidden, from classical point of view, area; 2.) the untwisting of trajectory in cyclotron for Sommerfeld particle is strongly delayed compared to that of a classical particle.

Quantum mechanical tunneling

L. R. Ram‐Mohan

Abstract A distinguishing feature of quantum mechanics, as compared with classical mechanics, is the phenomenon of matter exhibiting wave-like properties. A direct consequence of this wave property of particles is the tunneling of particles through potential energy barriers.-3 The classical particle is forbidden from penetrating the barrier region. In this chapter, the problem of one-dimensional (1D) quantum mechanical tunneling of particles through potential barriers of arbitrary shape is treated. We show that tunneling is a mixed boundary value problem, and obtain the action integral that leads to Schrodinger’s equation and at the same time gives the equations defining the boundary conditions (BCs).
