Absolute meter of photodetector quantum efficiency based on the parametric down-conversion effect

Vera M. Ginzburg, N. G. Keratishvili, Y. L. Korzhenevich +3 more

The quantum phenomena of parametric down conversion have been used for absolute measurement of the photodetector quantum efficiency of ultra-low-light radiation ranging from 10-12 to 10-15 W, which is equivalent to photon fluxes of 107 to 104 s-1. The process of parametric down conversion gives rise to highly correlated (in time and space) photon flux pairs. We describe the method, experimental investigation, and a new device involving the measurement of the coincidence rate of photodetection of these two correlated beams of light. The coincidence is lowered by a nonunit quantum efficiency of either detection. This fact was used for the definition of the absolute value of both photodetector's quantum efficiencies.

Cavity-enhanced parametric down-conversion as a source of correlated photons

P. Hariharan, Barry C. Sanders

The most common way of generating correlated photons is by parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal in free space. However, a drawback of this technique is the extremely low photon flux available. We present a simple analysis which shows that cavity-enhanced parametric downconversion, using an arrangement similar to an optical parametric oscillator and operated well below threshold, can yield a substantially higher photon flux without significantly degrading the correlation between photons.

Generation of Optical—Terahertz Biphotons and Detection of Their Terahertz Component under Frequency-Nondegenerate Parametric Down-Conversion

Vitaliy Sultanov, Kirill A. Kuznetsov, A.A. Leontyev +1 more

The conditions for the generation and detection of quantum-correlated pairs of optical and terahertz photons in the process of strongly frequency-nondegenerate parametric down-conversion of light are investigated. An approach based on increasing the frequency of the optical pump is proposed, whereby the power of a weak flux of terahertz idler photons can be measured for a wide range of parametric gain coefficients, down to the onset of the spontaneous down-conversion regime, using the same terahertz detector with a limited dynamic range. It is shown experimentally that the doubling of the frequency of pulsed laser pump leads to a 5-fold reduction in the lowest value of parametric gain that is still sufficient for detecting terahertz idler photons with a cooled hot-electron bolometer.
