Abstract

We demonstrate high resolution coherent control of cold atomic rubidium utilizing spectral phase manipulation of a femtosecond optical frequency comb. Transient coherent accumulation is directly manifested by the enhancement of signal amplitude and spectral resolution via the pulse number. The combination of frequency comb technology and spectral phase manipulation enables coherent control techniques to enter a new regime with natural linewidth resolution.

Control of Four-Level Quantum Coherence via Discrete Spectral Shaping of an Optical Frequency Comb

Matthew C. Stowe, Avi Pe’er, Jun Ye

We present experiments demonstrating high-resolution and wide-bandwidth coherent control of a four-level atomic system in a diamond configuration. A femtosecond frequency comb is used to excite a specific pair of two-photon transitions in cold 87Rb. The optical-phase-sensitive response of the closed-loop diamond system is studied by controlling the phase of the comb modes with a pulse shaper. Finally, the pulse shape is optimized resulting in a 256% increase in the two-photon transition rate by forcing constructive interference between the mode pairs detuned from an intermediate resonance.

Spectral Shaping of an Optical Frequency Comb to Control Atomic Dynamics

Yichi Zhang, Zhenqi Bai, Hongyan Fan +1 more

In advanced spectroscopy, the classical symmetric optical frequency comb is limited in temporal flexibility and selection freedom, which constrains the efficiency and stability of quantum manipulation. To overcome this limitation, we propose a method to realize precise energy-level manipulation using a femtosecond non-temporally symmetric optical frequency comb in the semiclassical three-level system. Numerical calculations show that the fall time of the pulse is the key parameter to realize the precise manipulation, and a shorter fall time contributes to the efficient accumulation of population. By optimizing the pulse parameters, 99.15% accumulation of population in the target state can be successfully achieved and stably maintained using an asymmetric slowly turned-on and rapidly turned-off (STRT) pulse train. Our demonstration of the non-temporally symmetric optical frequency comb provides a promising approach to efficient quantum-state preparation using spectral modulation.

High-Resolution Rb Two-Photon Transition Spectroscopy by a Femtosecond Frequency Comb via Pulses Control

Yichi Zhang, Peng-Rui Fan, Jinpeng Yuan +3 more

We experimentally observe the high resolution direct frequency comb spectroscopy using counter-propagating broadband femtosecond pulses on two-photon transitions in room-temperature 87 Rb atoms. The Doppler broadened background is effectively eliminated with the pulse shaping method and the spectrum modulation technique. The combination of the pulse shaping method and the spectra modulation technique provides a potential approach to reduce background of at least 99%.

Phase-coherent multilevel two-photon transitions in cold Rb atoms: Ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy via frequency-stabilized femtosecond laser

Tai Hyun Yoon, Adela Marian, J. L. Hall +1 more

A two-photon transition in cold Rb atoms will be probed with a phase-coherent wide bandwidth femtosecond laser comb. Frequency domain analysis yields a high-resolution picture where phase coherence among various transition pathways through different intermediate states produces interference effects on the resonantly enhanced transition probability. This result is supported by the time domain Ramsey interference effect. The two-photon transition spectrum is analyzed in terms of the pulse repetition rate and carrier frequency offset, leading to a cold-atom-based frequency stabilization scheme for both degrees of freedom of the femtosecond laser.

Enhancement of two-photon transition rate by selectively removing certain frequency comb teeth

Shuangyou Zhang, Wanpeng Yang, Jianye Zhao

We present experiments demonstrating an enhancement of resonant two-photon transition rate in 87Rb utilizing spectral phase manipulation of the excitation frequency comb. By selectively removing certain comb teeth, the resonant two-photon transition rate can be improved, and reach a factor of more than 1.8. The femtosecond pulse-train excitation of two-photon transition is investigated theoretically based on general multiphoton transitions and the results are compared with the experiments. The theory presented here gives a clear insight of physical mechanism of this quantum coherent control and indicates that it is simple, effective and universal for nonlinear interactions between frequency combs and matters.
