The pump induced Autler–Townes effect and Autler–Townes mixing in four-level atoms

Abstract

It is shown by theoretical simulation that tuning of the pump power can induce mixing and crossing of Autler-Townes(A-T)components of closely spaced transitions in atoms. Pump radiation also leads to small shifts of the central hole of A-T doublet. Off-resonance pumping gives an asymmetry in the A-T components and by controlling pump frequency detuning it is also possible to mix the A-T components.

Effect of the Bloch-Siegert Shift in a Strongly Driven Transition: High-Order Autler-Townes Doublets

Lijun Yang, Min Zhao, Lianshui Zhang +1 more

The effect of the Bloch-Siegert shift on a strongly driven transition is further investigated in a V-shaped three-level configuration. Under the condition of taking into account the counter-rotating component, the absorption profiles of the probe field is dominated by a series of doublets, including well-known Autler-Townes doublet and its high-order resonances. The dependence of properties of the secondary Autler-Townes doublet on the driving Rabi intensity is discussed in this paper.

Controllable A-T Splitting and Spatial Splitting Inside a Cascade Three-Level Atomic System

We illustrate the experimental observations of Autler-Townes splitting and the spatial splitting in an electromagnetically induced transparency window in a atomic vapor system of D1 line. As the power of the dressing laser beam changes, we study first-order and secondary Autler-Townes splitting. The influences of these dressing beams, which lead to the larger spatial splitting of four-wave mixing and the shift of probe transmission signal with by changing frequency detuning. Studies on such controllable Autler-Townes splitting and spatial splitting effect can be very useful in applications of spatial signal processing and optical communication.

Time-dependent aspects of the Autler-Townes effect in a four-level system

Kariman I. Osman, S. Swain

Time-dependent optical Autler-Townes spectra are calculated for a four-level system in which the ground state is a doublet with frequency separation much larger than any of the Rabi frequencies. The finite linewidths of the lasers are taken into account in the phase-diffusion model. Optical-pumping effects cause a transfer of population with a resulting significant change in the spectra with time. Numerically evaluated spectra are presented, and it is found that the nature of the asymmetry can change drastically with time.

Effect of Counter-Rotating Component in An Interaction between Light Field and Atomic System

Xiaoli Li

The effect of the counter-rotating component of the applied field on the level system is studied in a double-resonance level configuration and the result is presented in this paper. We show that the counter-rotating component leads to the Bloch-Siegert shift in a two-level system while leads to an asymmetry of the Autler-Townes doublet in a three-level system. The above results are explained via the dressed-state theory.

Autler-Townes effect for an atom in a 100% amplitude-modulated laser field. II. Experimental results

Stephanos Papademetriou, Michael F. Van Leeuwen, Carlos R. Stroud

We report the observation of the Autler-Townes absorption spectrum of a two-level atom in a 100% amplitude-modulated optical field. Two frequency-stabilized dye lasers interact with a three-level atomic cascade system. One of the two lasers is used to create the bichromatic field that saturates the lower transition, while the second one is tuned in the frequency between the second and third levels to probe the absorption line shape. We investigate the dependence of the spectrum on the detuning between the average frequency of the bichromatic field and the lower atomic resonance. In order to study the effects of saturation, for every value of the detuning we take a series of data for different intensity levels of the bichromatic field. There is very good agreement between theory and experiment and profound differences from the conventional Autler-Townes results with a monochromatic pump field. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Effects of Doppler broadening on Autler-Townes splitting in six-wave mixing

Jinyan Niu, Li-Ya Pei, Xiaogang Lu +3 more

The effects of Doppler broadening on Autler-Townes (AT) splitting in six-wave mixing (SWM) are investigated by the dressed-state model. We analyze the velocities at which the atoms are in resonance with the dressed states through Doppler frequency shifting and find that, depending on the wave-number ratio, there may be two resonant velocities which can originate from resonance with one of the dressed states or from resonance with two different dressed states. Based on this model, we discuss a novel type of AT doublet in the SWM spectrum, where macroscopic effects play an important role. Specifically, the existence of resonant peaks requires polarization interference between atoms of different velocities in addition to a change in the number of resonant atoms involved. Our model can also be employed to analyze electromagnetically induced transparency resonance and other types of Doppler-free high-resolution AT spectroscopy.
