Abstract

The thermodynamics of a homogeneous dilute Bose gas with an arbitrarily strong repulsion between particles is investigated on the basis of the exact relation connecting the pair correlation function with the in-medium pair wave functions and occupation numbers. It is shown that the effective-interaction scheme, which is reduced to the Bogoliubov model with the effective pairwise potential, is not acceptable for investigating the short-range particle correlations in a dilute strongly interacting Bose gas. In contrast to this scheme, our model is thermodynamically consistent and free of the ultraviolet divergences due to accurate treatment of the short-range boson correlations. An equation for the in-medium scattering amplitude is derived that makes it possible to find the in-medium renormalization for the pair wave functions at short boson separations. Low-density expansions for the main thermodynamic quantities are reinvestigated on the basis of this equation. In addition, the expansions are found for the interaction and kinetic energies per particle. It is demonstrated that for a many-boson system of hard spheres the interaction energy is equal to zero for any boson density. The exact relationship between the chemical potential and in-medium pair wave functions is also established.

Low-density expansions for the homogeneous dipolar Bose gas at zero temperature

Alexander Yu. Cherny

The low-density expansions for the energy, chemical potential, and condensate depletion of the homogeneous dilute dipolar Bose gas are obtained by regularizing the dipole-dipole interaction at long distances. It is shown that the leading term, proportional to the density, allows a simple physical interpretation and consistently describes the thermodynamic stability of the system. The long-range asymptotics are obtained analytically for the normal and anomalous one-particle correlation functions and the pair distribution function. We discuss the properties of the two-body scattering with zero relative momentum for the dipole-dipole interaction; in particular, we derive the asymptotics of the wave function and a correction to the scattering length for small values of the dipolar range. We show how the density expansions can be derived within the Bogoliubov model of weakly interacting particles without any divergence from the assumption of universality of the expansions at low densities.

Dilute Bose gas revised

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

The well-known results concerning a dilute Bose gas with the short-range repulsive interaction should be reconsidered due to a thermodynamic inconsistency of the method being basic to much of the present understanding of this subject. The aim of our paper is to propose another way of treating the dilute Bose gas with an arbitrary strong interaction. Using the reduced density matrix of the second order and a variational procedure, this way allows us to escape the inconsistency mentioned and operate with singular potentials of the Lennard-Jones type. The derived expansion of the condensate depletion in powers of the boson density n=N/V reproduces the familiar result, while the expansion for the mean energy per particle is of the form epsilon=2 pi planck(2)an/m[1+128/(15 square root of [pi]) square root of [na(3)](1-5b/8a)+...], where a is the scattering length and b> or =0 stands for one more characteristic length depending on the shape of the interaction potential (in particular, for the hard spheres a=b). All the consideration concerns the zero temperature.

Dilute Bose gas in two dimensions: Density expansions and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

A dilute homogeneous two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas at zero temperature is studied with the method developed earlier by the authors. This method allows for considering renormalization of an arbitrary pairwise potential in a self-consistent manner, without the pseudopotential delta-function representation. Low-density expansions are derived for the chemical potential, ground-state energy, pair distribution function, kinetic and interaction energies. The expansion parameter is found to be a dimensionless in-medium scattering amplitude u obeying the equation 1/u+ln u=-ln(na(2)pi)-2gamma, where na(2) and gamma are the gas parameter and the Euler constant, respectively. It is shown that the ground-state energy is mostly kinetic in the low-density limit. This result does not depend on a specific form of the pairwise interaction potential, contrary to the 3D case. A new form of the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed within our scheme.

Impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate using quantum Monte-Carlo methods: ground-state properties.

Peña Ardila, Alfredo Luis

In this thesis we investigate the properties of impurities immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length a, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length b can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We calculate the binding energy, the effective mass and the pair correlation functions of a impurity along the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch. In particular, at the unitary limit of the impurity-bosons interaction, we find that the binding energy is much larger than the chemical potential of the bath signaling that many bosons dress the impurity thereby lowering its energy and increasing its effective mass. We characterize this state by calculating the bosons-boson pair correlation function and by investigating the dependence of the binding energy on the gas parameter of the bosonic bath. We also investigate the ground-state properties of M impurities in a Bose gas at T=0. In particular, the energy and the phase diagram by using both quantum Monte-Carlo and mean field methods.

Functional renormalization for Bose-Einstein condensation

Stefan Floerchinger, CHRISTOF WETTERICH

We investigate Bose-Einstein condensation for interacting bosons at zero and nonzero temperature. Functional renormalization provides us with a consistent method to compute the effect of fluctuations beyond the Bogoliubov approximation. For three-dimensional dilute gases, we find an upper bound on the scattering length $a$ which is of the order of the microphysical scale---typically the range of the van der Waals interaction. In contrast to fermions near the unitary bound, no strong interactions occur for bosons with approximately pointlike interactions, thus explaining the high quantitative reliability of perturbation theory for most quantities. For zero temperature we compute the quantum phase diagram for bosonic quasiparticles with a general dispersion relation, corresponding to an inverse microphysical propagator with terms linear and quadratic in the frequency. We compute the temperature dependence of the condensate and particle density $n$, and find for the critical temperature ${T}_{c}$ a deviation from the free theory, $\ensuremath{\Delta}{T}_{c}/{T}_{c}=2.1a{n}^{1/3}$. For the sound velocity at zero temperature we find very good agreement with the Bogoliubov result, such that it may be used to determine the particle density accurately.
