Impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate using quantum Monte-Carlo methods: ground-state properties.

Abstract

In this thesis we investigate the properties of impurities immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard sphere potential with scattering length a, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length b can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We calculate the binding energy, the effective mass and the pair correlation functions of a impurity along the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch. In particular, at the unitary limit of the impurity-bosons interaction, we find that the binding energy is much larger than the chemical potential of the bath signaling that many bosons dress the impurity thereby lowering its energy and increasing its effective mass. We characterize this state by calculating the bosons-boson pair correlation function and by investigating the dependence of the binding energy on the gas parameter of the bosonic bath. We also investigate the ground-state properties of M impurities in a Bose gas at T=0. In particular, the energy and the phase diagram by using both quantum Monte-Carlo and mean field methods.

Impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate: Study of the attractive and repulsive branch using quantum Monte Carlo methods

We investigate the properties of an impurity immersed in a dilute Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte Carlo methods. The interactions between bosons are modeled by a hard-sphere potential with scattering length $a$, whereas the interactions between the impurity and the bosons are modeled by a short-range, square-well potential where both the sign and the strength of the scattering length $b$ can be varied by adjusting the well depth. We characterize the attractive and the repulsive polaron branch by calculating the binding energy and the effective mass of the impurity. Furthermore, we investigate the structural properties of the bath, such as the impurity-boson contact parameter and the change of the density profile around the impurity. At the unitary limit of the impurity-boson interaction, we find that the effective mass of the impurity remains smaller than twice its bare mass, while the binding energy scales with ${\ensuremath{\hbar}}^{2}{n}^{2/3}/m$, where $n$ is the density of the bath and $m$ is the common mass of the impurity and the bosons in the bath. The implications for the phase diagram of binary Bose-Bose mixtures at low concentrations are also discussed.

Mixtures of ultracold Bose gases in one dimension: A Quantum Monte Carlo study

Parisi, Luca

In this thesis we investigate the properties of mixtures of Bose gases in one dimensions at zero temperature using quantum Monte-Carlo methods. First we investigate the limiting case of an impurity interacting with an atomic bath. We characterize the impurity, by calculating its effective mass, binding energy as well as the contact parameter between the impurity and the bath. In particular, we find that the effective mass rapidly increases to very large values when the impurity gets strongly coupled to an otherwise weakly repulsive bath. Then we describe uniform balanced mixtures with repulsive interactions. We investigate the miscibility phase diagram of the two components and find that correlations do not alter the phase diagram predicted by mean-field theories. We investigate the Andreev-Bashkin effect , a non-dissipative drag between the the two components of the gas and find that the drag becomes very large in the strongly interacting regime. In non-homogeneous systems we also investigate the frequency of the spin-dipole mode. Finally we describe mixtures with attractive inter-species interactions, where one can obtain a liquid ground state because of the competition between the inter-species attraction and intra-species repulsion. We characterize the the liquid and we find that the liquid state can be formed if the ratio of coupling strengths between inter-species attractive and intra-species repulsive interactions exceeds a critical value.

Two-dimensional Bose polaron using diffusion Monte Carlo method

E. Akaturk, B. Tanatar

We investigate the properties of a mobile impurity immersed in a two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas at zero temperature using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. The repulsive boson–boson and impurity-boson interactions are modeled by hard-disk potentials with positive scattering lengths a and b, respectively, taken to be equal to the scattering lengths. We calculate the polaron energy and effective mass for the density parameter na2 [Formula: see text] 1 and the ratio a/b. We find that at low densities perturbation theory adequately describes the simulation results. As the impurity-boson interaction strength increases, the polaron mass is enhanced. Additionally, we calculate the structural properties of the Bose system, such as the impurity-boson pair-correlation function and the change of the density profile around the impurity.

Bose polaron problem: Effect of mass imbalance on binding energy

Luis A. Peña Ardila, S. Giorgini

By means of quantum Monte Carlo methods we calculate the binding energy of an impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate at $T=0$. The focus is on the attractive branch of the Bose polaron and on the role played by the mass imbalance between the impurity and the surrounding particles. For an impurity resonantly coupled to the bath, we investigate the dependence of the binding energy on the mass ratio and on the interaction strength within the medium. In particular, we determine the equation of state in the case of a static (infinite mass) impurity, where three-body correlations are irrelevant and the result is expected to be a universal function of the gas parameter. For the mass ratio corresponding to $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ impurities in a gas of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms, we provide an explicit comparison with the experimental findings of a recent study carried out at JILA.

Strongly interacting impurities in a dilute Bose condensate

Nikolay Yegovtsev, Pietro Massignan, Victor Gurarie

An impurity in a Bose gas is commonly referred to as a Bose polaron. For a dilute Bose gas, its properties are expected to be universal, i.e., dependent only on a few parameters characterizing the boson-impurity interactions. It has been known for some time that when boson-impurity interactions are weak, the properties of the polaron depend only on the scattering length of these interactions. In this paper, which accompanies Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 123403 (2021) (where some of these results have already been reported), we examine stronger boson-impurity interactions, keeping their range finite. We demonstrate that for attractive interactions between impurity and the bosons up to and including the unitary point, all static properties of a Bose polaron in a dilute Bose gas can be calculated in terms of the scattering length and an additional parameter that characterizes the range of the impurity-boson interactions. Our approach is valid if this parameter does not deviate too much from the scattering length of intraboson interactions, with the precise criterion given in the text. We produce explicit expressions for the energy and other properties of a polaron for the case when the impurity-boson scattering length is tuned to unitarity, and we also provide the first correction away from it.

Ultra-Dilute Gas of Polarons in a Bose–Einstein Condensate

Luis A. Peña Ardila

We investigate the properties of a dilute gas of impurities embedded in an ultracold gas of bosons that forms a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC). This work focuses mainly on the equation of state (EoS) of the impurity gas at zero temperature and the induced interaction between impurities mediated by the host bath. We use perturbative field-theory approaches, such as Hugenholtz–Pines formalism, in the weakly interacting regime. In turn, for strong interactions, we aim at non-perturbative techniques such as quantum–Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. Our findings agree with experimental observations for an ultra dilute gas of impurities, modeled in the framework of the single impurity problem; however, as the density of impurities increases, systematic deviations are displayed with respect to the one-body Bose polaron problem.
