Abstract

A dilute homogeneous two-dimensional (2D) Bose gas at zero temperature is studied with the method developed earlier by the authors. This method allows for considering renormalization of an arbitrary pairwise potential in a self-consistent manner, without the pseudopotential delta-function representation. Low-density expansions are derived for the chemical potential, ground-state energy, pair distribution function, kinetic and interaction energies. The expansion parameter is found to be a dimensionless in-medium scattering amplitude u obeying the equation 1/u+ln u=-ln(na(2)pi)-2gamma, where na(2) and gamma are the gas parameter and the Euler constant, respectively. It is shown that the ground-state energy is mostly kinetic in the low-density limit. This result does not depend on a specific form of the pairwise interaction potential, contrary to the 3D case. A new form of the 2D Gross-Pitaevskii equation is proposed within our scheme.

Short-range particle correlations in a dilute Bose gas

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

The thermodynamics of a homogeneous dilute Bose gas with an arbitrarily strong repulsion between particles is investigated on the basis of the exact relation connecting the pair correlation function with the in-medium pair wave functions and occupation numbers. It is shown that the effective-interaction scheme, which is reduced to the Bogoliubov model with the effective pairwise potential, is not acceptable for investigating the short-range particle correlations in a dilute strongly interacting Bose gas. In contrast to this scheme, our model is thermodynamically consistent and free of the ultraviolet divergences due to accurate treatment of the short-range boson correlations. An equation for the in-medium scattering amplitude is derived that makes it possible to find the in-medium renormalization for the pair wave functions at short boson separations. Low-density expansions for the main thermodynamic quantities are reinvestigated on the basis of this equation. In addition, the expansions are found for the interaction and kinetic energies per particle. It is demonstrated that for a many-boson system of hard spheres the interaction energy is equal to zero for any boson density. The exact relationship between the chemical potential and in-medium pair wave functions is also established.

Dilute Bose gas in two dimensions

Daniel S. Fisher, Pierre C. Hohenberg

The weakly interacting Bose gas in two dimensions is considered in the dilute limit ${n}^{1/2}$a\ensuremath{\ll}1, where n is the particle density and a is the range of the potential. The standard many-body perturbation theory for this system has two separate divergences: the first, associated with classical phase fluctuations, is responsible for the vanishing of the long-range order; the second is quantum mechanical and is connected with the vanishing of the scattering t matrix at long wavelengths and low energies. An earlier diagrammatic theory of Popov, which provides a consistent description of the system in the dilute limit, is rederived heuristically from a quasiparticle picture, and also using the renormalization group. It is shown that the superfluid transition temperature is ${T}_{c}$\ensuremath{\approxeq}4\ensuremath{\pi}(${\ensuremath{\Elzxh}}^{2}$/2m)n/[ln ln(1/${\mathrm{na}}^{2}$)], and the condition of validity of the dilute limit is ln ln(1/${\mathrm{na}}^{2}$)\ensuremath{\gg}1. The connection to the dilute Bose gas in dimensions d>2 and the universal behavior beyond the extreme asymptotic low-density domain are also discussed.

On the description of a two-dimensional Bose gas at low densities

Alexander A. Ovchinnikov

We propose a new method to describe the interacting Bose gas at zero temperature. For the three-dimensional system the correction to the ground-state energy in density is reproduced. For a two-dimensional dilute Bose gas the ground-state energy in the leading order in the parameter mod ln p alpha 2 mod -1 where alpha is the scattering length is obtained.

Low-density expansions for the homogeneous dipolar Bose gas at zero temperature

Alexander Yu. Cherny

The low-density expansions for the energy, chemical potential, and condensate depletion of the homogeneous dilute dipolar Bose gas are obtained by regularizing the dipole-dipole interaction at long distances. It is shown that the leading term, proportional to the density, allows a simple physical interpretation and consistently describes the thermodynamic stability of the system. The long-range asymptotics are obtained analytically for the normal and anomalous one-particle correlation functions and the pair distribution function. We discuss the properties of the two-body scattering with zero relative momentum for the dipole-dipole interaction; in particular, we derive the asymptotics of the wave function and a correction to the scattering length for small values of the dipolar range. We show how the density expansions can be derived within the Bogoliubov model of weakly interacting particles without any divergence from the assumption of universality of the expansions at low densities.

TWO-DIMENSIONAL BOSE GAS AT LOW DENSITY

А. А. Овчинников

We propose a new method to describe the interacting bose gas at zero temperature. For three-dimensional system, the correction to the ground state energy in density is reproduced. For the two-dimensional dilute bose gas, the ground state energy in the leading order in the parameter | ln α2ρ|−1, where α is a two-dimensional scattering length, is obtained.

Dilute Bose gas revised

Alexander Yu. Cherny, Arkady A Shanenko

The well-known results concerning a dilute Bose gas with the short-range repulsive interaction should be reconsidered due to a thermodynamic inconsistency of the method being basic to much of the present understanding of this subject. The aim of our paper is to propose another way of treating the dilute Bose gas with an arbitrary strong interaction. Using the reduced density matrix of the second order and a variational procedure, this way allows us to escape the inconsistency mentioned and operate with singular potentials of the Lennard-Jones type. The derived expansion of the condensate depletion in powers of the boson density n=N/V reproduces the familiar result, while the expansion for the mean energy per particle is of the form epsilon=2 pi planck(2)an/m[1+128/(15 square root of [pi]) square root of [na(3)](1-5b/8a)+...], where a is the scattering length and b> or =0 stands for one more characteristic length depending on the shape of the interaction potential (in particular, for the hard spheres a=b). All the consideration concerns the zero temperature.
