Abstract

Salmhofer [Commun. Math. Phys. 194, 249 (1998)] recently developed a new renormalization-group method for interacting Fermi systems, where the complete flow from the bare action of a microscopic model to the effective low-energy action, as a function of a continuously decreasing infrared cutoff, is given by a differential flow equation which is local in the flow parameter. We apply this approach to the repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes. The flow equation for the effective interaction is evaluated numerically on a one-loop level. The effective interactions diverge at a finite-energy scale which is exponentially small for small bare interactions. To analyze the nature of the instabilities signaled by the diverging interactions we extend Salmhofer's renormalization group for the calculation of susceptibilities. We compute the singlet superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries, and also charge- and spin-density susceptibilities. Depending on the choice of the model parameters (hopping amplitudes, interaction strength, and band filling) we find commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetic instabilities or d-wave superconductivity as leading instability. We present the resulting phase diagram in the vicinity of half-filling, and also results for the density dependence of the critical energy scale.

RENORMALIZATION GROUP ANALYSIS OF A TWO-DIMENSIONAL INTERACTING ELECTRON SYSTEM

Walter Metzner

We describe a Wick ordered functional renormalization group method for interacting Fermi systems, where the complete flow from the bare action of the microscopic model to the effective low-energy action is obtained from a differential flow equation. We apply this renormalization group approach to a prototypical two-dimensional lattice electron system, the Hubbard model on a square lattice. The flow equation for the effective interactions is evaluated numerically on 1-loop level. The effective interactions diverge at a finite energy scale which is exponentially small for small bare interactions. To analyze the nature of the instabilities signalled by the diverging interactions we compute the flow of the singlet superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries and also charge and spin density susceptibilities. Depending on the choice of the model parameters (hopping amplitudes, interaction strength and band-filling) we find antiferromagnetic order or d-wave superconductivity as leading symmetry breaking instability.

RENORMALISATION GROUP ANALYSIS OF THE TWO-DIMENSIONAL HUBBARD MODEL: SPIN CORRELATIONS AND D-WAVE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY

Walter Metzner

The repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model is analysed within a functional renormalisation group (RG) approach. The flow equation for the effective interactions is evaluated on 1-loop level. The effective interactions diverge at a finite energy scale which is exponentially small for small bare interactions. To analyse the nature of the instabilities signalled by the diverging interactions, we compute the flow of the superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries and also charge and spin density susceptibilities. Depending on the choice of the model parameters (hopping amplitudes, interaction strength and band-filling) we find spin density wave instabilities or d-wave superconductivity as leading instability close to half-filling. This calculation establishes the existence of d-wave superconductivity in the Hubbard model beyond doubt.

Functional Renormalization Group for Interacting Fermi Systems

We describe a Wick ordered functional renormalization group method for interacting Fermi systems, where the effective low-energy action is generated from the bare action of the microscopic model by a differential flow equation. We apply this renormalization group approach to a prototypical two-dimensional lattice electron system, the Hubbard model on a square lattice. To analyze the nature of the instabilities signaled by the diverging interactions, the flow of the singlet superconducting susceptibilities for various pairing symmetries and also charge and spin density susceptibilities are computed. This and similar RG calculations by others conclusively establish the existence of d-wave superconductivity in the Hubbard model.

Low-energy effective theory at a quantum critical point of the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Mean-field analysis

Kambis Veschgini, Manfred Salmhofer B

We complement previous functional renormalization group (fRG) studies of the two-dimensional Hubbard model by mean-field calculations. The focus falls on Van Hove filling and the hopping amplitude ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t=0.341$. The fRG data suggest a quantum critical point (QCP) in this region and in its vicinity a singular fermionic self-energy $\mathrm{Im}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}(\ensuremath{\omega})/\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\sim}\ensuremath{-}{\left|\ensuremath{\omega}\right|}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ with $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\approx}0.26$ [K-U. Giering and M. Salmhofer, Self-energy flows in the two-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model, Phys. Rev. B 86, 245122 (2012)]. Here we start a more detailed investigation of this QCP using a bosonic formulation for the effective action, where the bosons couple to the order parameter fields. To this end, we use the channel decomposition of the fermionic effective action developed in C. Husemann and M. Salmhofer, Efficient Parametrization of the Vertex Function, Omega-Scheme, and the (t, t')-Hubbard Model at Van Hove Filling, Phys. Rev. B 79, 195125 (2009), which allows us to perform Hubbard-Stratonovich transformations for all relevant order parameter fields at any given energy scale $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$. We stop the flow at a scale $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$ where the correlations of the order parameter field are already pronounced, but the flow is still regular, and derive the effective boson theory. It contains $d$-wave superconducting, magnetic, and density-density interactions. We analyze the resulting phase diagram in the mean-field approximation. We show that the singular fermionic self-energy suppresses gap formation both in the superconducting and magnetic channel already at the mean-field level, thus rounding a first-order transition (without self-energy) to a quantum phase transition (with self-energy). We give a simple effective model that shows the generality of this effect. In the two-dimensional Hubbard model, the effective density-density interaction is peaked at a nonzero frequency, so that solving the mean-field equations already involves a functional equation instead of simply a matrix equation (on a technical level, similar to incommensurate phases). Within a certain approximation, we show that such an interaction leads to a short quasiparticle lifetime.

Two-loop renormalization group calculation of response functions for a two-dimensional flat Fermi surface

Eberth de Almeida Correa, Hermann Freire, Álvaro Antônio Bandeira Ferraz

We present the formalism for a two-loop renormalization group (RG) calculation of some order-parameter susceptibilities associated with a two-dimensional (2D) flat Fermi-surface model. In this order of perturbation theory, one must take into account the self-energy effects directly in all RG flow equations. In one-loop order, our calculation reproduces the well-known results obtained previously by other RG schemes. That is, for repulsive interactions all susceptibilities diverge in the low-energy limit and the antiferromagnetic (AF) spin-density-wave correlations produce indeed the leading instability in the system. In contrast, in two-loop order, only the AF susceptibility diverges for this model. However, even this divergence takes place at a much slower rate than in the one-loop RG approach. The purpose of this paper is to show in a very simple setting how to assess the importance of two-loop quantum fluctuations in 2D interacting fermionic models. With some modifications, the present formalism can also be extended to discuss more realistic models such as the paradigmatic 2D Hubbard model.

Renormalization group analysis of weakly interacting van der Waals Fermi system

Sushant Kumar Behera, Madhavi Ahalawat, Subrata Jana +2 more

Abstract Weak-coupling phenomena of the two-dimensional Hubbard model is gaining momentum as a new interesting research field due to its extraordinarily rich behavior as a function of the carrier density and model parameters. Salmhofer (1998 Commun . Math . Phys . 194 249; 2001 Phys . Rev . Lett . 87 187004) developed a new renormalization-group method for interacting Fermi systems and Metzner (2000 Phys . Rev . B 61 7364; 2000 Phys . Rev . Lett . 85 5162) implemented this renormalization group analysis of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. In this work, we demonstrate the spin-wave dependent electronic structure and susceptibility behavior of model graphene–phosphorene van der Waals heterostructure in the framework of renormalization group approach. We implement singlet vertex response function for the weakly interacting van der Waals Fermi system with nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes. This analytical approach is further extended for spin-wave dependent susceptibility behavior. We present the resulting compressibility and phase diagram in the vicinity of half-filling, and also results for the density dependence of the critical energy scale.
