Collective fields in the functional renormalization group for fermions, Ward identities, and the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model

Florian Schütz, Lorenz Bartosch, Peter Kopietz

We develop a new formulation of the functional renormalization group (RG) for interacting fermions. Our approach unifies the purely fermionic formulation based on the Grassmannian functional integral, which has been used in recent years by many authors, with the traditional Wilsonian RG approach to quantum systems pioneered by Hertz [Phys. Rev. B 14, 1165 (1976)], which attempts to describe the infrared behavior of the system in terms of an effective bosonic theory associated with the soft modes of the underlying fermionic problem. In our approach, we decouple the interaction by means of a suitable Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation (following the Hertz approach), but do not eliminate the fermions; instead, we derive an exact hierarchy of RG flow equations for the irreducible vertices of the resulting coupled field theory involving both fermionic and bosonic fields. The freedom of choosing a momentum transfer cutoff for the bosonic soft modes in addition to the usual band cutoff for the fermions opens the possibility of new RG schemes. In particular, we show how the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model (i.e., one-dimensional fermions with linear energy dispersion and interactions involving only small momentum transfers) emerges from the functional RG if one works with a momentum transfer cutoff. Then the Ward identities associated with the local particle conservation at each Fermi point are valid at every stage of the RG flow and provide a solution of an infinite hierarchy of flow equations for the irreducible vertices. The RG flow equation for the irreducible single-particle self-energy can then be closed and can be reduced to a linear integrodifferential equation, the solution of which yields the result familiar from bosonization. We suggest new truncation schemes of the exact hierarchy of flow equations, which might be useful even outside the weak coupling regime.

ONE-LOOP RENORMALIZATION GROUP ANALYSIS OF BOSE–FERMI MIXTURES

BOYANG LIU, Jiangping Hu

A weakly interacting Bose–Fermi mixture model was investigated using Wisonian renormalization group (RG). This model includes one boson–boson interaction term and one boson–fermion interaction term. The scaling dimensions of the two interaction coupling constants were calculated as 2-D at tree level and the flow equations were derived at one-loop level. We find that in the flow equations the contributions from the fermion loops go to zero as the length scale approaches infinity. In three-dimensional case two fixed points are calculated. One is the Gaussian fixed point and the other one is Wilson–Fisher fixed point. We observe that the boson–fermion interaction decouples at the Wilson–Fisher fixed point. We also find that under RG transformation the boson–fermion interaction coupling constant runs to negative infinity with a small negative initial value, which indicates a boson–fermion pairing instability. Furthermore, the possibility of emergent supersymmetry in this model was discussed.

Three-body scattering from nonperturbative flow equations

Sebastian Diehl, H. C. Krahl, Michael M. Scherer

We consider fermion-dimer scattering in the presence of a large positive scattering length in the frame of functional renormalization group equations. A flow equation for the momentum dependent fermion-dimer scattering amplitude is derived from first principles in a systematic vertex expansion of the exact flow equation for the effective action. The resummation obtained from the nonperturbative flow is shown to be equivalent to the one performed by the integral equation by Skorniakov and Ter-Martirosian (STM). The flow equation approach allows to integrate out fermions and bosons simultaneously, in line with the fact that the bosons are not fundamental but build up gradually as fluctuation induced bound states of fermions. In particular, the STM result for atom-dimer scattering is obtained by choosing the relative cutoff scales of fermions and bosons such that the fermion fluctuations are integrated out already at the initial stage of the RG evolution.
