Magnetic properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

Three hyperfine states of Bose-condensed sodium atoms, recently optically trapped, can be described as a spin-1 Bose gas. We study the behavior of this system in a magnetic field, and construct the phase diagram, where the temperature of the Bose condensation ${T}_{\mathrm{BEC}}$ increases with magnetic field. In particular the system is ferromagnetic below ${T}_{\mathrm{BEC}}$ and the magnetization is proportional to the condensate fraction in a vanishing magnetic field. Second derivatives of the magnetization with regard to temperature or magnetic field are discontinuous along the phase boundary.

Theoretical and experimental study of spin-1 antiferromagnetic Bose-Einstein Condensates

Shao, Lingxuan

In this thesis, we study theoretically and in experimentally the properties of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with antiferromagnetic interactions realized in the ultra-cold sodium gases confined in optical dipole traps. We present in detail how to realize, diagnose and control the spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in our experiment. In order to describe the condensate, a mean-field theory is first adopted. This theory predicts a phase transition when changing the magnetic field $B$. The predictions of the mean-field theory agree very well with most of our experimental results, including the values of the critical magnetic field $B_c$, asymptotic values of $n_0$ (relative atom number in $m_F=0$ state) at large $B$ and the phase diagram of $n_0$. However, for small magnetization and small magnetic fields, we find abnormally large fluctuations (super-Poissonian) of $n_0$. In order to describe these large fluctuations, we develop a full quantum statistical description for the spinor condensate at finite temperature. To describe uncondensed thermal atoms (also present in the same trap), we use the ``semi-ideal" Hartree-Fock approximation to deal with the interactions between the condensate atoms and the thermal ones. The experimental results lead us to introduce two kinds of temperatures, the ``spin temperature" $T_s$ and the ``kinetic temperature" $T_k$ with $T_s\ll T_k$, characterizing respectively the fluctuaitons of the condensate spin and the thermal gas. We conclude that the system is reaching a quasi-equilibrium states, where different degrees of freedom reach equilibrium by separate mechanisms but where the mutual thermalization does not occur over the lifetime of the cloud.

Phase transition in the magnetic field in a Bose gas

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. G. Volosnev

The thermodynamic properties of a Bose gas of particles with nonzero spin and magnetic moment in states with and without a Bose-Einstein condensate are studied as a function of the external magnetic field. It is shown that there exists a temperature interval where a transition into a state with a Bose-Einstein condensate occurs in a Bose gas with constant temperature and particle number density when the magnetic field is increasing and reaches a critical magnitude. The temperature and magnetic field derivatives of the specific heat at constant volume and the magnetic susceptibility undergo a jump at such a transition.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Spin-1 Atoms in Tight-binding Bands

Guo Wang

We present a theoretical study of Bose-Einstein condensation(BEC) of trapped ideal gas of spin-1 ultracold atoms in tight-binding bands corresponding to simple cubic(SC) optical lattices.Under the constraints that both the total number of atoms (N) and the total magnetization (M) are conserved,we first investigate the phase transitions process of noninteracting spin-1 atomic system,by investigating the critical condensation temperature and condensate fraction,we find BEC with spin degrees of freedom shows richer phase transitions than BEC of scalar atoms. We then extend our studies to the case with a uniform external magnetic field included, the phase transitions for this case make interesting changes again.

Bose–Einstein condensation of ultracold atomic gases

Bose–Einstein condensation in a dilute gas of sodium atoms has been observed. The atoms were trapped in an optically plugged magnetic trap or in a cloverleaf magnetic trap. Rf induced evaporative cooling increased the phase-space density by six orders of magnitude. We summarize the different techniques used, and discuss recent studies of properties of Bose condensates with an outlook on future developments.

Static properties and spin dynamics of the ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose gas in a magnetic field

Krisztián Kis-Szabó, P. Szépfalusy, Gergely Szirmai

The properties of spin-1 Bose gases with ferromagnetic interactions in the presence of a nonzero magnetic field are studied. The equation of state and thermodynamic quantities are worked out with the help of a mean-field approximation. The phase diagram besides Bose-Einstein condensation contains a first-order transition where two values of the magnetization coexist. The dynamics is investigated with the help of the random phase approximation. The soft mode corresponding to the critical point of the magnetic phase transition is found to behave like in conventional theory.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Gas of Sodium Atoms

Kendall B. Davis, M.‐O. Mewes, Michael R. Andrews +4 more

We have observed Bose-Einstein condensation of sodium atoms. The atoms were trapped in a novel trap that employed both magnetic and optical forces. Evaporative cooling increased the phase-space density by 6 orders of magnitude within seven seconds. Condensates contained up to 5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{5}$ atoms at densities exceeding ${10}^{14}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. The striking signature of Bose condensation was the sudden appearance of a bimodal velocity distribution below the critical temperature of \ensuremath{\sim}2\ensuremath{\mu}K. The distribution consisted of an isotropic thermal distribution and an elliptical core attributed to the expansion of a dense condensate.
