Harmonic Lattice Approximation and Density Correlations in the Calogero-Sutherland Model

Abstract

For a one-dimensional model in which the two-body interactions are long-range and strong, the system almost crystallizes. The harmonic modes of such a lattice can be used to compute the ground state wave function and the dynamical density-density correlations. We use this method to calculate the density corrrelations in the Calogero-Sutherland model. We show numerically that the correlations obtained are quite accurate even if the coupling is not very large. Our method is considerably simpler than the ones used to derive the exact results, and yields expressions for the correlations which are easily plotted. Our equal-time correlations can be expanded in powers of the inverse coupling; we show that the two leading order terms agree with the exact results which are known for integer values of the coupling.

Density-density correlations in a Luttinger liquid: Lattice approximation in the Calogero-Sutherland model

Diptiman Sen, R. K. Bhaduri

For a one-dimensional model in which the two-body interactions are long-range and strong, the system almost crystallizes. The harmonic modes of such a lattice were used by Krivnov and Ovchinnikov to compute the ground-state wave function and the dynamical density-density correlations. We review this method, and apply it to the Calogero-Sutherland model, whose density-density correlation functions are exactly known for certain values of the coupling constant. We show numerically that the correlations obtained are quite accurate even if the coupling is not very large. Such comparisons have been made earlier by Forrester. The lattice method is considerably simpler than the ones used to derive the exact results, and yields expressions for the correlations- which are easily plotted. The equal-time correlations can be expanded in inverse powers of coupling; we show that the two leading order terms agree with the exact results which are known for integer values of the coupling. The strength-dependent power law fall-off is typical of a Luttinger liquid. In a general one-dimensional model where the two-body interaction decreases as a power of the relative distance, we argue, following Schulz, that at zero temperature the system behaves as a Luttinger liquid if the power exceeds 1, and as a Wigner crystal if it is less than 1.PACS Nos.: 63.20-e, 71.10Pm

Truncated Calogero-Sutherland models

S. M. Pittman, Mathieu Beau, Maxim Olshanii +1 more

A one-dimensional quantum many-body system consisting of particles confined in a harmonic potential and subject to finite-range two-body and three-body inverse-square interactions is introduced. The range of the interactions is set by truncation beyond a number of neighbors and can be tuned to interpolate between the Calogero-Sutherland model and a system with nearest and next-nearest neighbors interactions discussed by Jain and Khare. The model also includes the Tonks-Girardeau gas describing impenetrable bosons as well as an extension with truncated interactions. While the ground state wave function takes a truncated Bijl-Jastrow form, collective modes of the system are found in terms of multivariable symmetric polynomials. We numerically compute the density profile, one-body reduced density matrix, and momentum distribution of the ground state as a function of the range $r$ and the interaction strength.

Off-diagonal correlations of the Calogero-Sutherland model

G. E. Astrakharchik, Dimitri M. Gangardt, Yu. E. Lozovik +1 more

We study correlation functions of the Calogero-Sutherland model in the whole range of the interaction parameter. Using the replica method we obtain analytical expressions for the long-distance asymptotics of the one-body density matrix in addition to the previously derived asymptotics of the pair-distribution function [D.M. Gangardt and A. Kamenev, Nucl. Phys. B 610, 578 (2001)]. The leading analytic and nonanalytic terms in the short-distance expansion of the one-body density matrix are discussed. Numerical results for these correlation functions are obtained using Monte Carlo techniques for all distances. The momentum distribution and static structure factor are calculated. The potential and kinetic energies are obtained using the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. Perfect agreement is found between the analytical expressions and numerical data. These results allow for the description of physical regimes of the Calogero-Sutherland model. The zero temperature phase diagram is found to be of a crossover type and includes quasicondensation, quasicrystallization and quasisupersolid regimes.

A Quantum Many-body Problem in Two Dimensions: Ground State

Avinash Khare, Koushik Ray

We obtain the exact ground state for the Calogero-Sutherland problem in arbitrary dimensions. In the special case of two dimensions, we show that the problem is connected to the random matrix problem for complex matrices, provided the strength of the inverse-square interaction g = 2. In the thermodynamic limit, we obtain the ground state energy and the pair-correlation function and show that in this case there is no long-range order. Calogero-Sutherland type models are a class of exactly solvable models. Starting from the inception [1], till today, these models continue to be of interest, especially due to their exact solvability [2]. Moreover, these models are related to (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theory, random matrices and a host of other things [3]. Some variants of the models have attracted attention in very recent past [3–5]. The original model of Calogero [1] described N particles in one dimension, interacting through an inverse square law and a two-body harmonic interaction. The latter interaction was added to the effect of complete discretization of the spectrum. This model gave in to an analytic treatment yielding an exact solution. Sutherland [6] considered a variant of this problem where the harmonic interaction was replaced by a harmonic well containing the N particles. It was shown that one can exactly solve for the ground state of the system. The norm of the ground state wave-function was shown to be of a form that coincides with the joint probability density function of the eigenvalues of random matrices from an orthogonal, unitary or symplectic Gaussian ensemble, provided, the

Long-range interactions in the quantum many-body problem in one dimension: Ground state

Saugata Ghosh

We investigate the ground state properties of a family of N-body systems in one dimension, trapped in a polynomial potential and having long-range two-body interaction in addition to the inverse square potential studied in the Calogero-Sutherland model (CSM). We show that for such a Hamiltonian, the ground state energy is similar to that of free fermions in a harmonic well with a displacement that depends on the number of particles and depth of the well. We obtain the ground state wave function and using random matrix results, study the particle density and pair correlation function (PCF). We observe that the particles are arranged in bands. Due to the presence of long-range interaction, the PCF shows a departure from the CSM.

Quasi-Long-Range Order in the Calogero-Sutherland Model

Dora Izzo, Gilson Carneiro

The occurrence of quasi-long-range positional order in the ground-state of the one-dimensional repulsive Calogero-Sutherland model is studied. By mapping the exact ground-state into a one dimensional classical system of interacting particles at finite temperatures the structure function and the displacement correlation functions are calculated numerically using Monte Carlo simulation methods. These are found to exhibit quasi-long-range positional order for all values of the parameters. The exponent characterizing the algebraic decay of the displacement correlation functions with distance is estimated. It is argued that the ground-state of the repulsive Calogero-Sutherland model consists of a single normal phase with quasi-long-range positional order.
